Nice pair of Sony SS5050 speakers in Coventry. Ending very soon, looks like they're going very cheap for such good units. A bit like NS1000s on the cheap.

As I recall it was a development of Sony's proprietery DCRS (Direct Cock Reduction System) that was intended to solve the issue of over endowed Sony owners getting their tackle caught in the CD deck draw. Not many were sold outside the home market.

But he says it's rare!

It's the same colour as the first one I had, which came in a big formica covered Hi-Fi unit, along with the matching pre-amp, tuner, and a mint Garrard 301 (white) and early SME 3009 with Shure cartridge. All for £25! (mind you that was about 1977)

I was having a browse last night in the audio section of fleabay and that word is being very well worn out these days

Whenever I see that word being used I interpret it as "Couldn't find one on ebay today" or "It was a bag of shite back in the 70s , nobody bought it, hence why now it has low numbers surviving so let's call it RARE to be polite" :eyebrows:

Geoff,

This RCM is re-branded for three different companies - Amari, Consonance and Hanss Acoustics, which I have.

The build quality is excellent. Two small drawbacks - no lid, so I keep mine in its box, and also, there is no reverse direction switch like the Okki Nokki. I am happy enough with mine but generally clean a record at least two times to get it really clean.

I got a brilliant deal from a dealer in Hastings (I think) who advertised it on Wigwam.

Just so much dross and rubbish!

I see the bulk of Hi-Fi that's listed on eBay, because each day I have a quick scroll through what's selling in the next 24 hours and some of the newly listed stuff too.

Lately decent stuff has become much thinner on the ground and most listings are just for cheapo tat.

Now older gear that nobody would have given a second look a couple of years ago is commanding silly prices, especially seventies Japanese separates. God knows why, as most of them were nothing special.

Torus toroidal transformer, Mosfet output transistors, class a preamp, all capacitors are Elna "for audio" .... It has an awful lot in common with the TA-FA3ES [just missing the seperate front end psu & heavy duty casework ;)]

Interesting, what speakers were you using at the time?

Royd Minstrels, Mordaunt-Short MS25i & some Sony APM-22ESmk2 at one point.

The Royds worked best but those square Sony drivers really pack a punch in the bass department! FWIW the matching CD players supposed to be good too http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-XE-900E-CD-PLAYER-FAIR-CONDITION-GWO-/121088985161?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_CDPlayerSeparates&hash=item1c31774849

I agree re the Beomaster 4400, a very smooth sound with good sense of depth reproduction and i bet it'll finish up quite high value. the 4000 which preceeded it was also good, but "flatter" in reproduction of perspectives. I think the 6000 and 8000 receivers were good as well, but these were the last of the "proper" HiFi units they did for a very long time, as style over substance took over for fifteen to twenty years or so - IMO of course.

ALL B&O amps, whatever you think of them, were designed to work with 4 ohm loads, so were stable and reliable, only usually failing when caps got old, or sliding/touch controls broke..

A cleaning pad before play works better. Using a dust arm whilst playing, feeds noise back through the stylus. If you leave a spinning record on your turntable without lowering the arm and use the dust arm only, you can actually hear the brush fibres tracking the groove modulations if you listen closely. That noise feeds back through the vinyl to the cartridge stylus and contaminates the signal.

Hmm... he sees another advert that describes them as extremely rare and repeats it parrot fashion.

And hence a new truth is born!

Maybe they are, although a slight model difference (tweeter - which was probably discontinued or changed due to criticism even) doesn't mean that rare is good.

Well, i guess that they sold for less than DM5's might mean something.

The D5 is rare, especially in that kind of condition. They are seldom seen for sale.

I've owned them and the DM4. They are totally different and the D5 is the cleaner sounding and smoother of the two. Unlike the DM4, the D5 is a smaller sealed cabinet speaker and the drive units are different too. The D5 was B&Ws first proper 'bookshelf' speaker and they put some effort into getting it right (the little DM1 was about the same size, but originally aimed at the professional market as a small monitor).

The DM5 was a slightly later model and larger. Some similarity in drivers though.

The DM5 was a slightly later model and larger. Some similarity in drivers though.

The ebay seller's only contribution to info was roughly "these speakers from the 70s sound great".

The rest of it was copied straight from the Canadian sellers ad that he got when Googling the D5. I bet he has no idea if they are rare or not but has parroted that they are because the other ad did..

Another pair on Belgium ebay from sept 2012 says exactly the same thing verbatim "Extremely Rare" - unusual for people to use the exact same language in the title unless all copying from the place. http://www.ebay.com/itm/B-W-D5-SPEAKERS-EXTREMELY-RARE-COLLECTORS-LS3-5A-/271066946975

Another pair sold on ebay.uk in middle of Jan: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/B-W-Bowers-Wilkins-D5-speakers-/200880600027

And those from the very first page image search results on Google. I could think of much rarer things that still come up often enough to not call them particularly rare.

Just the usual annoying hyping up on ebay from people who have no clue (probably bought them at a car boot and googled when they got home) that always makes me type the same old thing on this thread, probably to many yawns

"I think this is far too much for what I thought was a bit of scrap metal

I have now added a picture to make sure we are talking about the same thing

It has been laying around in the garage for many years and was on it's way to the dump"

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.

On the one hand, great bargains can be had from people who decide to "try and sell that old thing before taking it to the dump", but I can't help wondering how much good stuff just goes straight to the dump without the slightest attempt to offer it to a new owner? I don't know about anyone else, but I've heard enough "I used to have one of those - I threw it in a skip" type comments to last me a lifetime.

Several years ago, you couldn't get rid of some old audio stuff no matter how good it was. 401's were a hundred quid tops and TD124's not that much more. GL75's went for £25 in plinths with old cartridges too.

I think that the collapse of the mid-priced HiFi market has caused the slack to be taken up by the used market now and I know many audio forumites do just that, paying a few hundred quid for things that would cost thousands new and I feel this has caused ebay prices to go bananas, hence the GL75 price inflation now for example.

A few months ago a guy was selling a rough looking 401 mounted on a very basic board/plinth and was dismissive of the arm, "I'm throwing in the arm for free dont know if it works" was what he said. It was an Ortofon worth at least double the TT, someone must have tipped him off because he withdrew it then re-listed separately.

I've seen plenty of stuff down my local refuse that would make you weep - once saw some big green valve amps - Pamphonic or Dynatron I'm guessing. I bought some KT66's off a valve seller the other day and he said his mate came across a pair of Quad II's (complete with valves) just sitting on the wall at his local refuse centre in Bracknell, ended up paying the manager £50 for them!

I've had this conversation before - the trouble is its impossible reaching the kind of people who do this before they actually do it. They don't seem to use ebay, local papers, or the freecycle website. They seem to live in world of their own.

I've already researched it, thanks Geoff, although according to one site they were made 'in-house'. There's a company selling the re-foaming kits here (http://www.speaker-repairs.co.uk/shop/refoam/gale.html) and even the Celestion tweeters can be replaced with SEAS units if necessary. I shall rebuild the crossovers, too. I also have the necessary power to drive them ;)

These use the same drivers as the System 600, but they sound awful in these plastic i6 cabinets. Bung the drivers and crossovers in decent bigger cabinets and you have a very good speaker on the cheap! I've done it.

"THIS ITEM HAS BEEN ADVERTISED ELSEWHERE" but has no reserve. How does that work. Doesn't seem any point in bidding if it could be withdrawn any time. If someone makes a bid and they are the highest (with no reserve) then they should win the auction IMO.

Back in the sixties and early seventies Neat was very much 'budget' equipment. It would do the job, but was regarded as very basic gear. Their cartridges and pickup arms were amongst the cheapest around.

More loony pricing. £199 for a bottom of the range early seventies Rotel RA-210 amplifier. Eight quid from a boot sale would be more like it.

It either ran out of time or the seller closed the listing. If you look here http://www.ebay.co.uk/csc/theholyprepuce/m.html?nma=true&item=140930579673&pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&si=lbYdGgdmf%252BLAWrdhMVt4HRbdW8k%253D&orig_cvip=true&hash=item20d01dfcd9&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc

Some great stuff in the description:

'This KEF speaker incorporates a tweeter for excellent high-frequency sound reproduction'

Note: If selling a loudspeaker it is always worth mentioning it has a tweeter just to avoid any doubt.

'What’s more, connect an amplifier ranging from 25-200 watts to this KEF speaker for a booming sound effect'

I would prefer to connect an amp of 24 watts or less or 201 watts or more in order to avoid the booming effect but that's probably just me :)

You're right, I am very unkind. I do wonder though if the grainy sound is just due to him connecting up some other recycle junk for amplification and source and the speakers are actually in good order. Bargain if you are near to Kettering.

Although I don't know if I like Kettering since I've never kettered (boom - tish).

The ridiculous description is not his and not his fault. That's eBay's onsite product information, god knows where it came from, it reads like a 'Pidgin English' translation.

The "graininess" described will no doubt be due to the tweeter coils binding on dried out Ferrofluid!

Looks like it needs an arm cable, part of a foot and a platter spindle at least.

Is it worth bothering with? The arm is a crap ADC ALT-1, they are pretty dire. The TT was pleasant and looks fancy, but is really no great shakes. I'd sooner have a TD160.

When combined together, these 3 units produce a quality of sound far in excess of what might be expected from the individual components.

Back in the day you could get the local taxi firm's radio transmisions breaking through on the speakers - even with the system switched off. So maybe that's what he means. 'Tango 12, Tango 12, pick up at 24 London Road...'

Listen to the quality on that!
