jamesie

came in 2 boxes with poly chips and wrapped about ten times round with bubble wrap :):) the seller deals in hifi so his packaging was 1st class ,, always a worry with postage of bulky items , i have had several hard to get items damaged in transit , so i always collect wherever possible , these weigh 42kgs so i was a little worried.

its worth looking at his other listings as he has some nice bit and pieces

ouch!!!!!:steam::steam::steam::steam:
its always a shame when its vintage gear thats been looked after for 30-40 years and then this happens ,,
if i get anything couriered i pay the extra for the 24 hour option, the less time its in a van the less chance it has of getting damaged ,, i have always found ups to be the best as well, they seem to be that little bit more careful, and their vans are racked, so your parcel isnt just rolling around on the floor,
the worst are parcelforce , hermes, and yodel. they use untrained agency drivers , ups are a little bit more expensive but i think its worth the extra.

i hope you can sort the damage.

Just love the styling of these speakers but how do they sound?

they sound very nice ,, a very warm and detailed sound ,, plenty of bass which is nice and tight with suprising lows for a 10" 93db sensitivity , 6ohm and response 39-20,000hz ,, the sb-x range is a bit of a rarity, i think due to their cost when new in 1978 (around £350 the pair)they weigh 19kg each so they are a good solid cabinet, on the whole i am very pleased with them,, when i got them a friend of mine heard them and straight away wanted to buy them from me , i then found him a pair 100 miles away for him, for £25:stalks: which was a ridiculous price ,i have just bought my second pair for £135 , my first pair came with all of my vintage technics system for £215 , if you get chance to buy a pair or listen to some they are well worth the audition , i was shocked when i first heard them, i had no intention of keeping them they just came with the separates that i bought , connected them all up and no looking back ,came with all the original boxes and packaging as well:) .
i am awaiting the arrival of the smaller sb-x1 that i purchased recently , not sure how they will sound .

Had the same prob with my magnum, but now use one of Stan Beresford's routers and switch it to the other amp when powering up...no thump, then back to it after a quick warm up...just one of the extra benefits of that particular item...very handy for different amp/speaker combos as well...

I see this guy is still trying to sell his horrible looking speaker units with totally rotted surrounds and "fuse board". He's been trying for weeks! Does he really think this is worth buying? And is there anybody as equally dim out there to buy them? Probably, eventually, I expect. It makes you despair.

Is it just me (being a grumpy old git) - or have the standards of written English being displayed on eBay (and elsewhere) fallen through the floor? Poor spelling, punctuation, capitalisation - all are at an all-time low. There's no excuse; it's just sheer laziness on the part of the writer - either now, or during their schooldays.

Take a look here (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Celestion-Ditton-15-XR-Main-Stereo-Speakers-black-/261172894737?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudio HiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item3ccf1e1c11). I rest my case, your honour.

You are not alone in your grumpingness about the use of English. Sometimes I have to look to a dictionary because, with all the poor spelling, etc., doubt creeps into my mind about how to spell words.

Proabably not the sellers fault as English is not really taught in schools any more. When my son was small he wrote stories that were riddled with spelling mistakes and without punctuation. We were told that they did not correct them as it might upset the children and affect their creative abilities:doh:

My wife having trained as a teacher would correct the stories and punctuate them. She was not very popular as you can imagine. An alternative is that the seller is of the "street speak/text speak" persuasion and tried his hardest when confronted with having to try to write properly:D

Hmm.... Not really.

The OL kit sold secondhand would be worth £450 (seen the same OL kit sell for that), then you've a broken PT (cos it has no motor now) which might sell for £120 if with the lid etc.

Then you have fairly cosmetic carbon fibre top-plates (although I guess the OL motor now is mounted on the top plate on this?) and base board which aren't the same as Funk Firm ones I've seen (so I guess DIY) and a Funk Firm armboard which is £65 new, probabl £50 secondhand.

I reckon you could put it together for about £650.. so another £145 for not having to put it together yourself IF an OL'd PT 1 is what you want.

You could instead hunt around, bide your time and pick up an Anni for £800 if you're lucky.

Superb and very rare Radford Monitor 180 speakers. In Hertford. These are incredibly scarce and sound amazing. A bargain at the £250 opening price.

They use a 10" bass driver similar to the Goodmans Goodwood unit, two 3" Goodmans mid cones firing at 90 degrees to each other and two 3/4" soft domes in the same plane. All high quality units.

All high quality units.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Radford-monitor-180-speakers-great-with-ST25-valve-amp-/330875332055?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudio HiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item4d09b4e5d7

One of those things I've talked about before - when starting from 99p start, they would normally fetch a price of about £150, at least ones I've seen over the years.

When Buy-It-Now or a high start is used on a rare item, people without that knowledge or experience come along and just pay the higher price. So then a new precedent is set (and the next seller might try higher). Only takes the one buyer to bite.

Fair dos for the seller but the buyer could do better.

They can be tricky to live with.

They need tall hefty stands to work properly and a BIG amp!

A mate had a pair driven by a couple of NAIM 135s and it was certainly an exciting sound, but it took no prisoners. He had to adjust and change much of his system to get things reasonably civilised due to the ruthlessly revealing nature of the Naims and AE1s together. I was never convinced I prefered them to the Linn Saras he'd used previously. They were pretty dramatic (if coloured).

I can recall my father owning AE1's 20 something years ago. He always found them clinical sounding.

No doubt my Leak 20 will ''throw the white towel'' with the AE1's!

No, don't even go there.

Your Stereo 20 would sound just right driving my nice tidy pair of Eatons, which coincidentally are going up for sale at around £400 (ovno.).

By the way, I've dug out a pair of tweeters which should hopefully suit your Magisters nicely! Better than those (Tandy) horns I'd say.

For all Alan Parsons fans - this is pretty rare: "Andrew Powell and the Philharmonia play the best of the Alan Parsons Project". Where APP's arranger gets his own album. Well recorded, interesting orchestral arrangements (though some stick too closely to those used on the APP albums IMO).

Not really related to bargains, but have you noticed that every week or two eBay experiment with the way the pages are displayed. I've noticed tonight that the Hi-Fi listings pages are not coming up in their usual form, they are (once again) stretched vertically and taking longer to load. It may be that this is a simplified form which they use when doing system maintenance maybe, but I don't know.

It is a bit silly to pay that for one Maxim alone, but I think you are being a bit harsh on them in general Geoff. I used to own a pair of Videoton Minimax 2's which are almost identical and they were pretty darned good. I suppose it all depends on what you pair them with and your own personal tastes. I would not pay a penny over seventy quid for a pair however

Well Dave, I've bought a few pairs of Minimaxes at boot sales too and would class them as just marginally better than the Maxim.

Neither did much for me and I reckon your £70 is too high. They are really only of value to collectors and can no longer be regarded as proper 'H-Fi'.

Of the era, the original 'C' series KEF Codas and Celestion Ditton 10s were probably the best ultra compacts about. You don't see many of either now, largely cannibalised for their drivers I imagine.

Never seen those before, Andr'e. Any good?

I've owned these, they are very well made. Not many about and never were!

The pre-amp is a bit bland sounding, but the big P300 mosfet power amplifier is a cracker. Rated at 180 watts per channel, but on review was turning out 220 watts. I found it would drive anything to enormous levels and sounded extremely transparent. It was my main power amplifier for over ten years and was generally used with valve preamplifiers. I think I still have the paperwork somewhere.

Hi Julian.

I'll check the plinth over and see if it can be fettled. I'd like to keep it original and looking as near brand new as possible. I can't tell if it's got a laminated skin or not, but anyway, I expect I'll take it back to bare wood and refinish it maybe black or wood veneer, but keeping the 'Dual' logo strip. It would probably benefit from extra bracing and perhaps some damping material. I may have a lid to fit too.

Obviously though, the first job will be overhauling the TT itself with maybe a rewire.

I reckon the arm could well be good enough for my Denon DL-160.

I bought a new Luxman R600 receiver back about 1975, that was a lovely bit of kit. As were the Harman Kardon 430 and 730 receivers I also added to the collection. The 730 was actually the best of them.

They were odd those ones - a second set of inputs had been added, so either a DIY bi-wire mod or x-over rebuild etc.

Cheap though (although think I boughy my SL600s for £200 from an ad on PFM few years ago).
