Radford employees formed Sondex Marco. They built the later Radford amps (Mk IV and Renaissance ranges, I think) for Radford/Woodside.

The Goodwood was a decent enough speaker. The DT3 tweeter is not the most sophisticated device, but ok. Nice bass and mid sound. Reasonable power handling.

Thanks Geoff - is the Magnum K the best of the Goodmans speakers?

Best build quality but I'm told Magnum SL's are the better sounding. Listening to this pair in front of me I can quite believe it.

....Cheaper too if your lucky :)

23-01-2013, 23:25
Hi Jules, the Magnum K was possibly better than the Goodwood, the main difference was the 12" bass unit, the Goodwood having what some called a 12" unit but was really a 10" driver with a wide flange.

My favourite of the seventies Goodmans was the Magister (second series with DT3 tweeter) which had the whopping 15" bass unit. They sounded rather nice.

...is the Magnum K the best of the Goodmans speakers?

Now there's a question...

As Geoff says, the Magisters are rather spectacular and I've heard good reports of the Goodwoods although not personally heard a pair. Then of course, there are the Achromat Sigmas which are fetching silly money currently and the Achromat 400s which are a later variant with a 12" bass driver and dome midrange and tweeter.

As a final thought, as Goodmans did a truly bewildering number of ranges and models, I suspect there is actually no-one on the planet who has heard every one and can thus give us all a definitive answer!

Hmm, I have an idea forming for Scalford 2014 - a Goodmans room....:eyebrows:

Surprisingly, I believe I have heard all the seventies Goodmans models (yes even the Dimension 8 and Double Maxim) and owned a few.

The Achromat in fact used derivative of the bass unit from the Goodwood, effectively a 10" driver, but with wide elongated flanges. many people describe it as a 12" unit, but the cone area equates to the same as most 10" drivers. The Mezzo series used a similar unit with a smaller magnet and no plastic skin on the cone.

They are all quite pleasant speakers to live with, although I was less keen on the 'SL' models that sported the clear dome Phillips tweeter, it had a bit of a bite to it.

I've heard and used these. They were popular in seventies disco/PA columns. WEM used them, I remember replacing blown ones in our big disco rig.

The Audioms and Axioms have their followers and do sound OK, but could not in my opinion seriously be regarded as matching vintage Tannoys.

As bass and full range drivers of that type and era go, I far prefered the 12", 10" and 8" Wharfedale drivers, the RSDD Super 10 being a favourite.

It's crap! I bought one new back then. Slack counterweight thread, loose headshell mounting, flimsy, resonant arm tube. Too little mass for an average MC, too much mass for a contemporary high compliance MM. It's just not worth bothering with. A (closely related) Linn LVX would see it off.

I have some sympathy for that view, Andre (as indeed you and I often agree on these things)... Betamax was WAY better than VHS, but the 'big boys' wanted the latter to succeed for commercial reasons, so once again marketing triumphed over performance!

As for TVs, we have a 12-year old Sony Trinitron CRT TV, and it's going nowhere until it pops its clogs... First of all because I refuse to chuck out a perfectly good TV, which is functioning just fine, simply to be 'up to date', and secondly, because I find that the colours look much more natural on CRT TVs.

The colours on LCDs and plasmas just look wrong (artificial), to my eyes!

You're not wrong there. I have a 30-year old 18" Mitsubishi CRT telly that has much better colour fidelity than any plasma, LCD or LED screen I've seen demonstrated. It may not be "hi-def", but it's staying!

I think a good CRT TV is a bit like a good old Quad amp - it's not accurate or the latest technology, but there's something quite pleasing about the portrayal ...

But I've moved away from both now! Having worked in film and tv for 20 years, accuracy and high resolution is important to me in an image. There are some stunning new tv's out there but they need careful calibration to get the best out of them, so you'll get the natural colours you want. Worth remembering that the vast majority of dealers who sell these fancy tv's don't bother setting them up right to demo them. Also worth bearing in mind that the vast majority of people who buy them probably don't bother to set them up right either!!

A CRT set, Mike? Ewww!
2nd TV Toshiba giving variable colours intermittently, assume on the way out
£5 for a TV I can take.
Lovely picture
Saw a big flat screen, perhaps 50" next door recently
Did not like the look of the picture at all
Have flat screens caught up on pic quality yet ?

Contrary to some opinions here, a good plasma screen will leave a CRT for dead. It's all about the calibration and using something like THX mode rather than the silly 'vivid' or 'shop' modes that most screens come set to.

My Panasonic 42" HD plasma screen (set to THX) is excellent. All standard definition broadcasts are upsampled by my Sky box to 1080i so I don't see a reduction in quality, just a reduction in resolution. To be honest, I watch very little standard definition material now.

That is funny:

It is in full working order, however the volume/gain variable resistor needs replacing as there are gaps in the control and make the amp unstable. Also there is some mains hum which can be heard with the music, so I suspect a capacitor needs replacing. These are only minor repairs which should take very little time to correct. The amp is well laid out and have photgraphed the inside . It is a bit dusty on the inside so could do with a clean.

In other words "There's all sorts wrong with it, it's humming like Sizewell B and it needs sand blasting to get all the shite off it". But apart from that it's brilliant.

Very very nice speakers but as Martin said, watch those racetrack bass drivers, A high power amp will see them off if you are not careful. T Lines are over stuffed on those so play with removing the wadding because you can make the go very very low.

They're great if you have the room. Watch the KEF drivers as they are rare and expensive to replace.

Great speakers - but didn't have the smoothest transition between drivers.

I owned the smaller R40s for a good number of years and they were great for the time: smooth and laid back with a good midrange and pretty deep bass. Not the last word in detail or dynamics but they could be made to rock. You're right about the transmission lines, they only needed light stuffing - about half the original fill.

Not a bargain - but a fun ebay thing! ----

I've a CD on ebay auction at the moment, and have just received this question about it --

Could you please answer, as accurately as possible, some questions concerning this item? Here they are:
1. Discs: Any scuffs or scratches?
2. Booklet: Any signs of wear/aging or defects (especially wear on corners, rusty staples, creases, indentations on the edges and any kind of pressure marks)?
3. Tray card / Rear insert: Any signs of aging (for example, discoloration, fading, yellowing, etc.)?
4. Spines: Are the coloured areas of both spines still bright or, instead, they have faded, as a result of prolonged exposure to sunlight?
5. Jewel case: Is it the original one? Is it intact? Any cracks, holes, notches, cutout marks, etc?
6. Country of manufacture: U.K.? U.S.A.? Another?

If he is that dementedly fussy I really do not want him to buy anything of mine, I can imagine all sorts of hassle ahead -- 'ere, there was a speck of dust on the packet, have a negative rep point.

So I've added him to my blocked bidders list.

Here's an interesting thing that may slip by relatively unnoticed. A pair of Philips motional feedback speakers (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Philips-/150991539054?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudio HiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item2327cc0b6e&_uhb=1) - They're relatively unknown & the title and description don't do these speakers justice at all. They'd make a great second system or a cheap computer system with a volume controlled DAC, as they're active. No foam rot, as they have rubber surrounds!

3-way actives with a 40 watt amp on the bass and 20 watts covering the mid/treble. They sound great and proved too expensive to make, so weren't on the market for all that long.
Nice price so far and not long to go!

Bit harsh!

The 2025TC was actually one of Garrard's first lightweight tonearm efforts and is much less of a groove-grinder than some of its predecessors.

If you find yourself with a few spare pounds and a few spare hours at some point, try buying one and giving it a once-over. Then fit it with a Sonotone 9TAHC cartridge with a nice new stylus, plug it into an amp that has a proper ceramic cartridge input (not just into a line input) and be prepared for a surprise....:eyebrows:

Lovely - and collection in Newbury. I'm bidding!

These are the baby brothers of the original Phillips RH541 (I believe that was the model No.), which sounded quite astonishing. All the Phillips MF speakers sounded pretty remarkable for their size and used very good quality drive units.

The most famous MF speaker is of course the Bose 901, which caused a huge stir when the first model was released in the seventies. Although you could never describe them as 'neutral', even today the way they can shake the ground with powerful bass that extends flat to around 20Hz., is spectular, all the more so coming from such a small box (they are the only Bose speaker I've ever wanted to own mind you).

Good speakers and way before their time. Literally home made by Steen. He used to bring over his Bacofoil ribbon protypes to try in our demo room. Then later, we had the finished article with bass units added.

They were pretty good and we sold a couple of pairs. Trouble is, if they go wrong, who will put them right ?

Motional feedback (MFB) went one step further: they had an accelerometer on the bass unit, feeding back into the active amp circuit. Clever, and it worked. Bass was very accurate for a smallish speaker.

I remember in the late '70s Yamaha brought out an amplifier and speaker pairing that had to be used together (I think).

I'm pretty sure the amp had a plug-in board that matched the model of speaker used and there was a few models in the range. They were servo-driven.

An honest price from an honest seller, and despite the blemishes it is a very pretty thing http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Goldring-Lenco-GL69-turntable-record-deck-/330863234066?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_Turntables&hash=item4d08fc4c12

The problem is the platter & bearing, i'm not sure if you could transplant a 'GL75' bearing & platter in it or not!

synsei

I don't know all that much about the GL69 André, but from what you are suggesting I'm guessing the bearing isn't up to much.

Rare Bird

You could damp the platter, i think if it was lower price & he'd post it i would have gone for it & chanced a 'GL75' bearing fitting as a replacement.

I heard some Audio Innovations valve amps sound spectacular many years ago. Are they robust?

do not know about the valve ones being robust martin , but a friend has the transistor flying saucer one, Alto i think its called for about twenty years
never missed a beat with royd minstrels & a Gyrodeck

Getting the valve amp itch !

It has horrible plastic (nylon) horizontal bearings and the horrible plastic arm-rest catch.

No cable, so where are you going to find the Belling & Lee 4-way plug (unless you convert to two RCA phonos)?

£160 is too much. I doubt if the seller would accept £100, which would be a more reasonable price.

Careful - Klipsch speakers can be very shouty, although a Leak Stereo 20 would stand a good chance with them. Plenty of volume, no doubt!

Are they good.

Surprisingly good. They are the speakers that came with the Symphony radiogram and I used a pair as my main speakers for a couple of years when I was younger. I have a pair of them now (plus the matching radiogram) and a pair of the slightly bigger Bolshoi models (plus the matching radiogram!).

One thing to be careful of is that they cannot take big power. As I found out to my cost one evening when my parents were out and I was a bit reckless with the volume control of my Yamaha CR-820! I only found out later that the amplifier in the Symphony radiogram has a colossal output of 4 watts per channel...

Is it knackered? The white circle on top looks dodgy I reckon. It looks like a crossed thread bodged with ptfe tape to me.

Sadly, they are very bad speakers. Absolutely rubbish. completely unreliable. Sound dreadful. No bass. No treble. Very little midrange. Ugly, too.

Yes, I'd definitely stay away from these, everyone.

Right, that's done. Now then, lets see, they're about 8 miles away from where I am now so I could nip in and pick them up after work if I win them...
