Just tonight won another reel for my Ferrograph 'Series 7'..paid a bit more than usual but being a nice one was worth it...The unusual thing about these is they are 8.25" diameter as opposed to the usual 7.0" reel

Two sizes were made 7" and 8.25". I have about a dozen of the former and a couple of the latter. Your 8.25" spool does look in good condition.

Do you know why the 'Hublok' mechanism is often found to have been removed?

Gis em :eyebrows:

Aye i have two 7" ones, don't hold enough tape on 7.5ips..You don't really need the hub locks on a series '7' machine or most other later companies machines, hub lock was needed on the older Wearite Ferrographs that didnt have spool clamping.

Edit: Forgot to add Ferro hub lock reel do tend to jam some older machines spindles from different manufacturers.

Do the Series 7 have treaded hub spigots for use with a treaded spool retainer? I know the Brenell and Nagra machines do, so, as you say, do not need the 'hub locks'.

Mine were bought for the Series 6 machine I have. I read somewhere that the metal spools acted as radiating fins for the wind/rewind motors of the Wearite decks, which could overheat if used with plastic spools! Can't say I ever had any trouble though.

The 8.25" diameter was the original spool size chosen by Ferrograph as it was the same diameter as spools of 8mm cine-film, fitting most home projectors at the time.

Apropos tape length, a 7" spool can hold 1800 foot; enough for 45mins at 7.5ips. I can understand why most serious machines have the capability to take 10.5" diameter spools. I don't use tape that much, anyway 7" is the largest spool size I can fit on the Nagra. Nick (Beechwoods) and I have exchanged recordings we have made at 7.5ips on Nagra machines and I can't find fault with this speed on playback. Mind you, I have not done a comparison as such between recording at 7.5ips and at 15ips.

Hi Barry
Yes the 'Series 7' are threaded...You need the hub lock for the old wearite ferrographs cos if you don't the reels are proned to vibrate..

10.5" are no good to me, 8.25" are perfect..

You can get 2,400ft on a 8.25" reel, The 'Series 7': '702'/'722' variants actually have 15ips believe it or not, you should get around half an hour out of a 8.25" reel @ 15ips.Just over an hour with 8.25" @ 7.5ips..

Only drawback with the 'Series 7' & the series 6' i think! is the tape doesnt disengage from the head on wind so you must remember to turn your amp volume off when doing so or fried tweeters could be on the menu.

Anyone wanting a 'Series 7' be prepared to spend some money on having the Pinch roll & three idler wheels re-tyred, the original Neoprene tyres are nearly always bolloxed.New ones are much quieter anyway. They either go to mush or rock hard, anyone who says 'Yeh there ok' are probably rock hard & not ok

Less hiss at 15ips than 7.5ips.. Don't like NR

Yeah - tell me about it! The idlers on my Series 6 'melted', creating the most awful sticky mess on the flywheel. I bought some new replacements, but have yet to fit them - I can't see how it is done.

Not sure if these are going to be a bargain or not but you don't see too many GALE 401s up for grabs these days.

Be interesting to see what they go for. (original post, Andre)

Id have thought about £150 ish, the wooden cabinet version was a better looker tho.

Just returned from a quick demo of these Gales. He's done a lovely job on them. Unfortunately I mislaid my CD of test tracks and had to listen to some unfamiliar music but they sounded very impressive in his workshop - huge sound. I'm in two minds about these, you just can't tell anything in a situation like that - they were connected up to a basic Denon amp. He said I could come back with all my Naim gear for another demo, but I'm not sure I can be arsed with all that. Would my 250 even be big enough to control all that bass? I thought it a bit cheeky to ask for a home demo :eyebrows:

Those Gale '401' need a good amp they are demanding speeka..

Here's the 'GS401-C' pictured below, i prefer these, the 'GS401-B' have the wood cabs the same but a flat front instead of the '401-C' curved front...

Given that the 250 would drive the 'dreaded' Linn 'Briks, I would have thought it would cope well with the Gales but there could well be other issues at work, a case of round v flat earth maybe!

It would be good if you could introduce yourself in the welcome section before trying to sell your gear. There are strict rules about this, I'm afraid.

Your Radfords?.............they're worthless. Give them to me & I'll pay you for their scrap value.........ahem

Re Gale 401's.. I used to use them with the mid turned fully up and the tweeter backed off a tad..

A Naim 250 will drive 401's with little trouble unless you really want to push it, in which case the rigidly held power supplies will cause the amp to complain rather unpleasantly..

DMS 'briks are fairly efficient and the 250 gives around 125WPC into 4 Ohms (old 'Briks dip to below 3 at some frequencies IIRC). The 401's need POWER to make them come to life and I'd suggest a "looser" sounding amp for them - the Meridian 557 or Quad 606 II/707/909 should be ideal for example, together with other beefy powerhouses.

I just got a Thomas Dolby LP delivered today. Excellent condition (near mint to my eyes). 1p + postage. That's £3.01 in total. The postage was £2.61 and the packing materials must have cost more than 39p, so the seller made a loss when you figure in his ebay and paypal charges.

His loss, my gain :)

Andre, that one will give you a severe headache within an hour of use... The Meridian MCD and especially MCD Pro were rather better, although very lacking by modern standards - a cheapo Cambridge or NAD would wipe the pants off one in sound..

My Marantz CD63 is the equivalent of the Philips (well, it looks identical except that it's in black). I disagree that it will "give you a severe headache within an hour of use". No, it's not the ultimate audiophile player, but it never pretended to be, so shouldn't be auditioned as such. And yes, it has a different sound presentation compared to more modern players, but it can be quite a musical sounding player in its own right. I'm very fond of mine, especially for the likes of Julio Iglesias and other 'simple' (MOR) music. I find complicated multi-layered music can overpower it and sound messy and unfocused. (am I making sense to anyone?)

The Meridian versions are a lot rarer and go for a lot more money. I don't think Andre wants to buy it for it's sound quality, more for it's collectability. Personally I'd rather have it over a cheapo Nad or Cambridge any day. I'll never get rid of mine.

I just found the treble to be a bit "ringy" at the time and couldn't listen for long. The Sony CDP101 was much better, although both of these early machines had a "paper cutout" kind of soundstaging IMO. The MCD Pro I had, which was the first CD player I owned and is still running I understand, 25 years on, had a more relaxed presentation and more air and space when there..

Brimey Dave i aint gonna use it, was for keeps sake having the box..The first two machines i bought were the Mission DAD7000 which was the Philips 104 hot rod & the Meridian MCD Pro which you mentioned, the Pro had the bolt on bottom section that carried the power supply if i remember, anyhow i prefered the Mission..I got both on the ticker back then as they were so expensive for a young lad to pay for..

The DAD7000 and B&O CDX were the two machines that persuaded me that CD was worth getting. Both needed some time to stabilise and the MCD-Pro was a lot less "dirty" sounding to me, although not as "exciting" I thought. By modern standards though, they're awful I suspect.........

NINE GRAND??????? Fuggin 'ell :(

Twenty one years ago, 509's were less than £2500 retail and I perhaps foolishly bought a pair of Tube Technology Genesis mono's instead, which sold for about the same.

Several years ago, stuff on ebay was dirt cheap. It's only in recent years that audio has taken off in price (unlike the clocks I bought which now sell for half what I paid for them).

hifi_dave
16-03-2010, 22:31
When I first started selling 509's they were around £1100 the pair and made the USA competitors look like very poor value indeed, now they are similarly priced. This is partly due to the £2K price rise just before Christmas...:stalks:
Having said that they are still wonderful amps, solid and reliable.

As for 'vintage' products - I used to moan that all the wonderful old kit I have was worth virtually nothing but now it's all gone stratospheric and I'm still not happy because I find it too expensive to buy goodies on E-Bay...

They're still a bargain compared to some of the so-called 'high-end' shite sold nowadays for a hell of a lot more, where you're paying for the prestige value of a 'desirable' badge and not much else....

I loved your 509s (the first ones you had). These work because they use high quality hand-wound transformers (made by Tim himself) and use a simple well-thought out circuit with very good, although not stupidly exotic components - always a successful recipe for valve amps :)

It's just a pity he's rather sold his soul to the devil these days and instead of 'proper' no-nonsense designs like the 509s, he seems happy churning out audio jewellery to pacify the badge snobs who'll buy anything with a flashy chrome faceplate fitted with his name emblazoned on the front

Creek tuners are very good.

Your right about the Trough-Line, it is a flawed gem in terms of performance, though not sound quality. To much signal it overloads to little and it is poor in noise levels and it can drift of station too (though normally that would be the case with a bad/poorly maintained one). However its sound quality is excellent if you can pamper it.

Having played with some Jap tuners recently, it is easy to fall to the allure of easier operation and a more solid tuning ability. But the question for me is does the Trough-Line hold its own sound wise...I use mine with an EAR FM decoder. I haven't answered my question yet.

Regards D S D L

Old Creek tuners seem to be very well regarded by many people but in my humble opinion they are very overrated. I had an old Creek a few years ago and found it very coloured (but pleasant) sounding. Like most British tuners they are simple, crude designs with poor sensitivity & selectivity specs. I'd rather use a good vintage 1970's mid-range Japanese tuner such as Sansui TU-517, Trio KT-7500 or Pioneer TX-9500 - try one of those an you'll soon realise the limitations of your Creek. Expect to pay around £90 to £150 for the Sansui or Pioneer and just £40 to £60 for the Trio (a real bargain!).

TC-366 has permalloy heads which wear and may not now be replacable. I had one for years and replaced it with a TC377 which got left behind at my last job. It's long gone now - a Nak cassette deck creamed it anyway..

33/405-1 for less than £140 - bloody 'ell, you have some luck Andre, especially when Dada can supply new mk2+ boards and supply caps for it, including new speaker sockets and reduced or no limiting to muck things up..

I tried my "new" late production (well over 100***) 33 last weekend and was impressed with it at first until the penny dropped that the sound was all superficial. All the little musical cues so easily reproduced through the AVI and Croft were either diluted or missing. Dada do a refurb kit which replaces all the electrolytics and raises the rail voltage to 16V. Does anyone have experience of this? I doubt I'll go the Net Audio route as the 33 wasn't ever intended for a main system, but a cap overhaul seems a good idea, although the electrolytics look fine.

Hi Dave
That is correct with the 'TC-366' the heads on this one look as new, i'll not be using it but i will give it a full belt change & new Pinch Roll. It's for collections purpose but i do insist they are in a new both working & cosmectic condition.I'm presently on the look out for the 'TC366.4' version.

I have also a 'TC-377' but has some serious damage to the facia so thats kinda spares till i locate a new one, these are miles better sounding than the plentifull Akai 4000. I've got a mint Sony 'TC-399' Coming next week, i like the 'TC-399' but hate those oversized brushed Knobs.. The 'TC-377' is my fave little Sony R-R..

I know it's evil but it was obvious to a blind man the seller knew nothing about the lot he had so i took the oportunity to prey on him..Again the Quads will be mint/working static for collections sake not used..

btw i do give all my things a power up from time to time.keep em good.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a222/LIVING-SIN/RR2.jpg

(Spent most the day cleaning that facia it's mint now..Wants a bit of work on the cabinet)

(Not touched these yet, just scruffy. wtf he stuck that sticker on for i ask  )

I'm toying with the Dada cap kit, which replaces those old ERO/Elco (or similar) caps B&O and Naim used by the hundred and raises the rail voltage to 16V (which seems a good thing on the face of it, although I'm suspicious tbh). The thing was serviced in 1982 (when it was under 5 years old) and it looks as though the volume pot and some mother-board dry joints were attended to.

Hi Dave

Art of Sound is supposed to be a community and as such and in that spirit it would be nice to offer things on the forum for sale or if you know that someone would like something then to offer it to them. If they can't afford it etc then offer it to the broader membership. This is a nice thing to do + it saves ebay and paypal fees as well.

I know you would quite like a Revox classic tuner A67 (I think). If I had one and I don't, I would contact you first to see if you were interested. If not then onto the forum and then ebay or elsewhere.

Now when DarrenW originally sold the Accuphase I was not really as interested in tuners as I am now but when Ali got it I commented at the time on how much I would like one as my interest had grown. I also think that pretty much everyone on the forum knows of my interest in tuners and the review I am involved in doing. As the Accuphase is supposed to be the top dog, so the opportunity to obtain one would have been a real blessing.

Truth is I feel a bit hurt by this and let down by the community:( Its impossible to see everything and I missed this.

I don't have a right to anything exclusive and that's not what I am saying, just it would have been nice to have been asked that's all.

Firstly I have not had a go ( I don't think) at anyone just expressed my disappointment and frustration at discovering I had missed out on something that would have been of massive help to me,that is all. Anyone who wants to read the PM I sent Ali can, I was not rude at all. Perhaps I have been naive in believing that people can remember expressions of interest, though not expressed loudly and back at the time; which is awhile ago (6 months ago+).

I think I am allowed to be disappointed. My disappointment was compounded in my belief that Ali new I would be interested in the tuner should he ever want to sell it. Obviously I got that wrong.

Frankly if the members of the forum don't know of my interest in tuners and my collecting of them for a massive review (I should point out for everyones benefit) then obviously I have failed somewhere.

I am not on a high horse...I don't think.

If I have made a prat of myself mentioning all this, well there you go, I am a prat  Have a laugh and move on nothing more to see here......

Given some of the nutters I've come across when selling things occasionally on eBay, I pity professional traders trying to keep a clean sheet.

I'd like to say that 99.4% of the people I deal with at work would give me positive feedback if asked but that's probably a bit of a stretch.....

Another machine arrived today Sony 'TC-377'. it's mint but needs a good clean & service, wants a new set of belts etc..I always fit new belts regardless of if they need em or not. The great thing about the 'TC-366', 'TC-377' & 'TC-378' Sony machines is they had a wedged shape cabinet where you could either have the machine laid down flat or sat up like the 'TC-366' pictured at the back, a clever idea, you just unscrew the side screws & turn the machine around, screw it back up..

Anyway got it for a song £51.00

That Sony will just want a service.. There not far off 40 years old now..

I have no use for a 10.5'' machine dave you'll never see one in my collection..I think youll find you may get more trouble with a 'Logic 7' than an old Sony tbh, i've seen many of those logic controls fail. 'Logic 7' need a lot of money spending on them.. My 'Super Seven' cost me a lot of money, i was actually glad to see the back of it.

Aye non disengaging heads on FFw/Rew, that was one of the primary reasons that Betamax video machines were a flop putting aside the extra pitfall of short recording time available on high quality record..But like anything in the consumer electronics world if something is easier to use fuck sound/vision quality

Dave theres one thing theres no pressure pads on a 'Logic 7' like the older machines..Nice looking machines all the same..

Faith is a good thing. My faith is in the self, I'd suggest that she has faith in her self, and you have faith in her! People find cures in everything from going to america to have stuff poked in thier eyes to reiki to faith healers to chinese medicine to books about special diets.. it's all about triggering the faith in the self. Meditation is good for that and it's free (unlike going to America to have stuff poked in ya eye). People praying to thier gods for her is a wonderful thing, bit I say cut out the middleman and pray to her, you don't even need to belive in god to do that! People say where there's life there's hope, I say where there's life there's faith! it comes in many forms, but it's the most powerful thing there is, and the best thing about it is it's in all of us... Belive in it, harness it... And anything can happen!
Just my thoughts on it.. hippy mode off :)

May just leave it. Won't have much effect at LF unit frequencies.

Otherwise, hoover or a pin.

I put my original pair in the attic when I moved to ProAc Tablettes under domestic pressure. By the time I sold them, I'd upgraded my TT, arm, cartridge and amps. Makes me laugh how over the years people have so called seemingly upgraded & upgraded spending many thousands thinking they are reaching audio nirvana, in reality they are deluding themselves.. when at somepoint they hear something like speakers they used many moons ago & realise they been such plonkers over the years, also realising they have effectivly degraded & Degraded

Some very sticky masking tape might do the trick as those dust covers are a plastki type material you cant rip.. being that they might show traces of creases back out.

Back in the day we had a waiting list of one year for Quantum amps. They were good and great value.

Back then the fave system with the mags was a heap of Meridian and Mission 770 speakers. We used to dem this against the Quantum and Celef or SD2 speakers at a fraction of the cost and generated a waiting list because it sounded so much better.

Those were the days...:eyebrows:

Bagged myself an armless Logic 'Tempo' turntable last night for a cool £42.00, Linn fitting, i'll probably fit an Alphason 'Xenon' arm or something on it..Pictuoor when it arrives.

Yep, I agree - great little tuner. In fact, guess who its new owner is..........;)

I've owned most of Quantum Electronics output but never seen any 205 monoblocks. Also, does anyone know if the ST100's mooted bigger brother, the ST-150, ever made it into production?

Finally, I'm not sure if it's OK for this thread, as I didn't buy them on eBay, but these mysteriously removed a tenner from my wallet and deposited themselves in the car when I was at the dump last week - Goodmans Magisters, with proper 15" bass drivers! :eyebrows:

'205' are very rare now, i paid a forunte for a pair 20 odd years ago.At the time i was using '102' Pre/ '402' PSU/'207DA' Dual active Power..also had a '202' kit aswell. I never ever saw the later new styling 'ST150' just the 'ST-100'. I put the tuner up as i thought Neil (DL) might have took it up being into tooners, but well done adam, like i said in the vintage communications thread ''the best kept secrets are the bargins''

Andre - thanks for the PM!

The Quantum stuff was available in kit form before they changed the names and offered them fully built. I have some data tucked away at home but if I recall correctly, it was the C1 preamp kit that became the 101 and then the 102, and the P2 power amp kit became the 202.

They were the best looking by a million miles and accurate to 1/100th of a gramme, apparently. Bit fiddly to use and two of them are coming unstuck as I recall. Must drag them out for a fiddle sometime.

Well, Andre, let me educate you then good sir! As an ex-Goodmans employee who had access to their archive I can tell you that the early 70's range went something like this -

Maxim - Two way with 4" bass
Double Maxim - as above but twin 4" bass drivers
Minster - Two way; 8" bass driver
Havant - Three way; 8" bass driver
Mezzo - Three way; 10" bass driver
Magnum - Three way; 12" bass driver
Magister - Three way; 15" bass driver

At the same time the range had a few oddities like the Goodwoods, which were also three ways with a 12" bass driver and the Dimension 8s which had a 10" rear-mounted passive radiator and four 5" bass drivers in a bidirectional arrangement.

The Goodmans ranges were horrendously confusing, with the 'M' range listed above, the RB series, the dB series, two different ranges of Achromats and the High Impact Monitor range, to name but a few! They also had an irritating penchant for re-using names -I know of four different versions of 'Maxim' that spanned the 1960s to the 1990s.

A lot of people dismiss Goodmans loudspeakers quite readily because of their relative low cost when they were new and the fact that you really can pick them up for plennies nowadays. The only real collectables are some of the rarer drive units like the Axiom 80s and the original 1960s Maxims. I think this is a shame, personally - they came up with some simple but very capable designs over the years and it is always worth remembering that many of the great UK loudspeaker designers started their careers at Goodmans. I personally think the final closure of the company in 2006 was a very sad day for the British audio industry.

I've had a look and it's a Mitchell. Apart from the place where the stylus is placed (improved on the Mitchell from a safety point of view, if not from a user point of view), they look identical.

Maximum error (for a tracking force of 1.5g weight): 8.3mg, or +0.55%. Good enough for me.

These days I use an electronic jeweller's balance as it's more convenient and just as accurate. Sometimes I use a Swiss 'Correx' gauge.

These came out just before Audio Innovations ceased trading. Richer Sounds bought the design, company, etc afterwards but just produced the Alto and a Cd player and not the valve designs which made AI famous.

I don't remember it particularly fondly I did sell a few back then early 90's(93 -94 if I remember right) I guess I had a less open mind in regard to anything which did not use valves and I viewed the Alto with fear in so much as it might point to AI being about to dump valves.

It looks like an early one to me.

It is an early one, as there is no system link bus bar connection that later ones (Richer sounds) have that hook the amplifier up to the Cd player (I think Richer did a tuner) and allow it to work like a midi system.

Good luck Hamish.

Why are classic pieces fetching so much now, well certain overrated british pieces have for a bit several obvious reasons, but now anything worth bothering with hold a price..My heart is with vintage gear but over the last few months i've started selling my items, i've quite frankly lost intrest in it all, over fabricated prices have yet again destroyed one of my intrests i was once so passionate about.

They were indeed different - the original were purely Audio Innovations design, but the later ones are a bit of a Richer Sounds/Audio Partnership Chinese-factory mash-up. They're still not bad units but nowhere near as good as the originals.

INSIDER TIP! To tell the difference between the two types, look at the back panel - the later Richer versions have an RJ45 socket that connects to the matching CD player/tuner for remote control facilities - the proper AI ones have no such socket.

Edit: Oops, sorry - just seen DSDL's reply which says all the above! Still, at least you now know we're both telling the truth.........;)

If people who aren't immune to financial concerns (i.e. the non-minted majority) are concerned about the £s then stuff like new cars and HiFi etc are the first to take a hit, and attention turns to the second-hand market as a way to save money.

At the same time, people who would have traded-in/sold their old kit (car, HiFi or whatever), are now hanging on to them and so the choice/volume on the used market drops and the price goes up.

Unfortunately it's just basic market economics and it's not going to get any better until the economy really is on the up again and confidence returns....

Ah let em Steve, i've been selling all my vintage stuff off over the last few weeks. All gone now, a friend bought a massive chunk of it...Just left myself the Ferrograph amp (Up for sale) & Logic Turntable. The decks up for sale i'm not going down the vinyl route, i've decided because the same applies to used records with over inflated prices..I'm kinda in a different position to others, other like many styles of music which is plentifull where as i'm stickly early prog which restricts my second hand too much that i have no option but to pay a fortune for an LP, besides i left vinyl for a reason last time that i really don't want anymore.

The world s shit..

ps: Not so much the Economy its obvios who's to blame for price increase

No Dave. It's gotta go, gotta put it all behind me & move on, shifted 75 pieces of equipment over the last two weeks.

I put the amp aside for Hamish if he wants it but i'm worried he wont like it & most important i hope it doesnt break down on him!

The only old pieces i wont get rid (only because i use em) is my Mission '737R' speakers.

System will be:
Sony 'X222ES' CDP (variable output)/Maverick 24/96 DAC
Brand new power amp (Not decided yet)
Mission '737R' Speekas

Thats it.

Couldnt help myself again. Another Ferrograph 'S7' machine...Looks rough but under the grime it's actually excellent, cabinets got broken on the joints but no problems, 23Kg even in a well packed box i'm never suprised..good deal @ £65.00..The pinch roller has turned to goo as they do & i'm assuming so have the three idler wheels inside so i'm loking at £100.00 for starter to get them re tyred.

Just the trims on the top each side of the Flap/Handle, rests of the parts are perfect...Re anodising isnt a straight forward process you have to anodic coating removed back down to the aluminium.I was wanting some parts from something else Anodising aswell as some ferrograph reels Barry

Liked it or not, but such is the situation on vintage market today. It is not even the highest price.
But you must admit it looks great :stalks:
G-22k's bigger brother (G-33000) often achieves a higher price than 4500 dollars.

PS-I saw first smilie Andre :lolsign:

Worst case ever of gratuitous use of flesh to advertise hifi? Not the most flattering of camera angles, and bless her (him?), but I don't think Heidi Klum will be too worried about the competition... but why? Why cheapen the sale of a pair of very expensive speakers with a cheap stunt (I said stunt) like this?

Because its MSS HiFi, remember I posted an add they had in Stereophile a while ago, were they were offering dinner dates with glamour models at special ;) musical evenings.

Stereophile got complaints about the add so they don't advertise with them anymore.
