I just ordered on of THESE (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OCZ-120GB-Solid-3-SSD-2-5-SATA-III-Read-500MB-s-Write-450MB-s-/271064174427?pt=UK_Computing_Solid_State_Drives&hash=item3f1caf0f5b) after noticing the low price. For a 120GB SSD drive that doesn't look bad. I got two machines that can use do with a SSD upgrade.

Not that it really means anything, but I had one of those fail on me a few weeks ago. Not bought from that seller though.

Most SSDs have excellent performance. The telling feature will be reliability over the long term, which is impossible to tell. I noticed that eBuyer were selling those OCZ SSDs as well as a couple of cheap Sandisk models.

I am all SSD at work (desktop & lappy) and I may pick one up for home use.

George: if you run Windows 7, it's a piece of cake to create an image backup to a USB drive and then boot the DVD and restore the data to the new SSD.

Can you run through how that is achieved please Martin and what software is needed?

StanleyB
21-09-2012, 12:34
There is a good guide HERE (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html) on how to do a back up and restore in Windows 7.
I use Acronis myself but that's through habit more than anything else.

The SSD in this laptop is 120 Gb and cost me £380 the original 30Gb SSD as supplied by Dell on this laptop was a £900 option. £50 is nothing for 120Gb
SSD is the way forward and soon the next generation will be with us.

StanleyB
21-09-2012, 12:48
£50 is nothing for 120Gb
Which is why I posted the link ;). I paid £280 for the 250GB that I am using in my main laptop. It transformed the machine in terms of speed increase. Has me dreaming about an i7 processor PC with 8GB memory and 512GB SSD:drool:.

MartinT
21-09-2012, 14:26
Can you run through how that is achieved please Martin and what software is needed?

Stan has given an excellent link on how to use Windows 7 backup to create an image (it's important that that option is ticked) to an external drive. No additional software is required.

Once done, replace the old HD with the new SSD. Boot up either the original W7 DVD or the repair DVD that you were offered to create when the laptop was first switched on. You may need to adjust BIOS settings in order to boot the DVD, but mostly they default correctly.

Select Restore from Image, point to the backup drive and let it do its magic.

One word of warning: if the SSD is a smaller capacity than the HD it's replacing, this won't work. You will need to shrink the volume to smaller than the SSD (e.g. shrink the HD volume to 115GB for a 120GB SSD) before you create the image backup. You can Google for how to do this, there are tons of resources out there.

If you get stuck, start a new thread and we'll try and help.

Might keep an eye on that - thanks for the heads-up Marco! :eyebrows:

I've been after one for ages to go on my Biotracer PSB-80 but they seem rare and expensive over here - the last one I watched went for the wrong side of £500.

Edit - just noticed auction is in US dollars, not HK ones, so it's starting at around £550! Oh well.... :(

Marco
05-10-2012, 10:27
Lol... No doubt it would be a real cracker of a cartridge though, and outperform some seriously high-end stuff made today. All my instincts are telling me that (and they don't often let me down), so I guess it's just how much moolah you're willing to pay! ;)

In my view, if it could be bought for less than $1200, sonically, it would be a bargain.

Oh yeah, sure. For me, however, if I can buy a cartridge for £750 that performs like one at £2k, which I suspect is the case with the Sony, then it's a bargain.

However, your idea of a bargain I suspect might be somewhat different! ;)

You'd have to hear them, I did. To get some idea, just lay a pair of small speakers on their backs and listen to them. That's about the sort of sound you get! Vague, diffuse and lightweight (not to mention the horrible colourations).

The seller thought a bit of welding would see it back in working condition. There was about 10 bids when I last looked and the price was about £50. It ended, but I didn't look to see what it went for.

£52

Nope, a laser can lose power and still work with optimum discs. The Pioneer drive in my Ayre SACD player started doing this, playing some discs and skipping on others. It was diagnosed as a failing laser and the entire drive was replaced.

These old Stable Platter transports have a propensity for the glue holding the laser lens to deteriorate and the laser focusing goes to pot because the lens is askew in it's holder. It's not uncommon either for the lens to jump clean out of it's carriage altogether during shipment :( It can be glued back into place but you need to be very sparing with the glue and have a steady hand too.

All CD mechanisms (possibly with the exception of a CDM3? Can't remember seeing what's on the board) carry with them components prior to the laser which constitute part of the power supply.

Very often it is a failed capacitor on the mech that causes a lack of power to the laser.

Your average and even your not-so-average repair man, even back at the manufacturer (probably especially back at the factory!) will class a failing of any part of the mech as a 'failed laser'. The actual laser itself may be absolutely fine but the power isn't getting to it properly. It mostly takes a real geek to actually bother to trace and solve the real problem as for anyone else it's just easier to buy a new mech and charge it to the customer or tell them it's not repairable and have they seen their latest range?

Here's a random sample of geeks talking about this:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-source/203703-help-cdm-1-mk2.html

THE FIRST THING you need to do is replace that blue electrolytic capacitor, the one with 2103 beside it, with a new Nichicon(axial or radial matters not), then re-install the OLD CDM unit to see if the resistor still overheats. No doubt, AT ALL, the blue cap is the reason your old cdm stopped working. I've never, ever seen a CDM1-mkII have any problem other than this one cap failing. If the resistor stops burning with the old mech, then there is a fault in the new one.

I suspect that a shocking number of CDM's have been tossed in the trash due to ignorance of this cap. Since I have been working on, e.g., Revox A77's since the ate 70's, I knew of the poor durability of German brands of electrolytic caps(forgive this generalisation, but I doubt anyone can argue this point that has long experience), so I had little troube identifying the fault the first time I had read problems with a player thus equipped. The voltage rating of that cap need not be increased. If you use a Nichicon or at least a Nippon Chemicon, even a 16V cap will last forever.

I've had that happen to me..

Unfortunately it caused a massive eBay problem for me, a guy who bought the PD-77 that was fully working when I shipped it just wouldn't believe me. He was a technician too but refused to even look to see if there was anything loose. Forced my hand into having to pay full return shipping from France. I got it back and the lense was rattling around in the bottom of the chassis.

Apologies to all if this is not the right place so mods feel free to move it to where it should be but I thought haste might be better than accuracy.
A few weeks ago I was contacted by a Debt Collection Agency called the Lewis Group with an office in Cleckheaton. They were demanding that I paid an outstanding debt of £33.65 to PayPal. After much site searching I was able to e-mail PayPal (I always prefer to get things in writing :) ) and ask for details of the debt concerned. Within 48 hours they responded with an assurance that my account was in good order and no such debt was owed. Armed with this assurance I assumed it was a 'try-it-on' scam and ignored it.
Today, while I was out, a representative of the same Group's Belfast office called at our house and worried my 68 year old wife with a written Final Notice for the same debt - so much for PayPal's assurance that no debt was owed.
I have again e-mailed PayPal and told them to withdraw their dogs or face the consequences (but very politely :) ) and I thought I'd post the details here to warn any others or see if anyone else had had the same experience.

Bit extreme to actually send "the boys" round. I am interested only in as much as recently I had a letter from solicitors acting on behalf of HM Rev & Customs for a late filing penalty fee. The letter didn't say which year it related to, only that if I did not pay in 7 days they would either send the boys in or take me to court.....for £100:lol:

All sorted now, but only after a lot of phone calls later did I get the info as to which years return was said to be missing.

Well, my drive mech failed and Ayre rushed a replacement drive from the USA (it's a Pioneer drive that's no longer manufactured) so I wasn't going to complain. Their UK repair chappy is very knowledgable, he ran diags and it came up with 'failing laser'. I wasn't going to argue with him when I was looking at a free new drive with the Ayre being some three years old.

Don't bother with PayPal, you have to deal with the DCA. By sending anyone around without a court order (after you've been to court and had judgement against you) is illegal - harrassment. If it is their general behaviour to others as well (it will be) it is enough for the OFT to have their licence taken away.

I'd report the visit to OFT and then go on to the Consumer Advice Group forum and find some legal letters to send to the DCA to tell them to desist, citing the relevent law. You also ask them to give evidence of you actually owning them any money. If they can't comply within a time limit then they fall foul of some law or other.. all help is there on the CAG forum.

Unfortunately, the first advice is to ignore letters etc and to not get in contact with anyone. That confirms to them that they have the 'correct' address and so start to hassle further.

I've had this trouble before with credit card debt that I paid off directly at a discount to Halifax. A few years later it appeared that halifax both cleared the debt at a discount AND sold the debt to a DCA for them to also try to profit on, but the full amount. I ignored it all for a long while (as advised) and nothing happened anyway, but then I sent the right letters from CAG and the DCA said "err... looks like we can't justify this, we're 'passing it back to the original creditor' and the letters stopped".

The worst thing to do is to treat it with any seriousness!

I bet they had a Dave K who owed money but with a false address and just picked any out of directory enquiries. Shouldn't effect any credit file either because it isn't a credit agreement (but you should check your credit files - normally able to do for free).

I've never known of anyone's first generation CD players stopping working other than perhaps mechanical issues or the odd output cap causing some noise. General electronic issues that would also effect turntables and phono stages of similar ages.

Only seem to be ones from the times CD players became cheap to make and buy, became more throw-away, that they start going wrong.

Good quality ones just seem to keep playing and playing.. IME anyway!

They actually came round, one guy, rang the bell, knocked on the door and woke my wife from her afternoon nap. He spoke to her at the door, said it was a delicate matter, and when my wife asked what was it about he told her his story and handed her the envelope with the card in it.

Collect only. Usually a killer for the price - great if you live local or can easily travel to Essex

They weren't bargains.. Two previous Mk IIs failed to attract bids starting at £125 ish. £90 was probably about right.

Most large-ish speakers are collection only so that is always factored into the normal going price on ebay.

Never have a new price as your reference - that always makes you pay over the odds - you need to know the real secondhand demand for whatever it is and I don't think mid-range, recent speakers are much in demand at all. There are too many sought-after classics and high-end true bargains around for many to bother with mid-range. Might as well save up a little more and find something with more cache..

I think people using new prices as references has accounted much for price increases over the last few years, people who used to buy new have turned to the secondhand market without any experience of what prices used to be and end up bidding too high (but still seems a bargain compared to what they used to spend with their dealer).

I'm really pleased with the new PSU, it's miles better than the Maplins PSU and Sbooster I had before.
I'm just debating what to do with the old SBT and bits, I might hang onto them, if the AppleTV 2 is anything to go by, I think once the SBT is out of production, the price will go through the roof.

Oh man, I remember the Standard fireworks Air Bomb Triple Repeater...

None of you pussy fireworks like you get today, this thing had three tubes & each one shot out three air bombs, & they sounded like bombs!

What a racket :D It was great

Must admit though, the best as a kid was at a fireworks party at a friend of my fathers. No idea how, be he managed to get hold of one of the rockets that they fire when calling lifeboat men to the station :eyebrows:

It was like thunder, must have been heard for many miles, & this lovely green parachute glowing like I don't know what came gradually floating down from what appeared to be miles up :)

Never forgotten ;)

The Grand Wazoo
18-10-2012, 22:05
Thunder?
When I was a kid, living in Central Africa in the mid 70's we used to get the most outrageous Chinese fireworks. There was one legendary night on the balcony of our house when a neighbour (an adult at that) placed a thing called a 'Thunder Bunger' underneath a large oval shaped enamelled steel pot.

Said pot proceeded upwards in short order to visit the great panel beater in the sky and returned after what seemed like minutes, clattering to the ground. On inspection it was found to be more round than oval and with several bulges to the base.

The next logical thought was "What if we try two?"

The pot went into orbit and was never seen or heard from again.

Oddly enough, there was also a strangely coincidental outbreak of bushfires that night, with our house at the centr, & which razed one or two square kilometers of sub-Saharan African Savannah to the ground!

Reid Malenfant
18-10-2012, 22:24
Actually I guess most of us here know nothing....

Obviously I was saying that the thing I heard as a kid was loud, very!

But we know nothing of bombs, really, I know I am, & we all should be kind of thankful that we don't know what a little bomb, 100lbs of high explosive goes off like at fairly close quarters ;)

I'd say "thank god", but I don't believe in him, that we have had relative peace since before I was born.

Something that I reckon we take for granted unfortunately.

Big apologies for the off of ebay topic

Still spinning like your monkey did?

No, I'm taking the pills now.

There were two monkeys - one spinning and one to take his place when he got too dirty. I still have both of them somewhere.

'Classic' little japanese Nikko integrated from the seventies. Looks like a 12wpc TRM300 judging by the number of buttons, likely to go for peanuts, good little amp.

A bargain? Not a chance, bottom of the Sony range in it's day and probably worth about £15! (or £5 at a boot sale, which is where it probably came from)

I don't know what you mean.
That's a nice bit of top quality schmutter guv'nor - a hundred knicker seems like a proper bargain to me - I'd probably go for the 20 quid Ebay 'warranty' as well, 'cos that seems reasonable too.

They got me convinced with this bit:
In this world of Mp3 players and ringtones do you not long from the days when listening to music was an open, colourful and pleasurable pastime rather than the shut in, compressed and dull sounds of today's world.

Just spotted these, Ditton 25 speakers, finishing soon, near Leeds.

They look in great condition, this could be a really big bargain! Only up to £56 with less than 12hrs to go!!!!!!!

(now don't all start bidding against each other)

By the way, they are the Mk.II version with the Ditton 44 styling.

Yeah, saw that. Courier won't be too cheap if they come with cabinets and if the drivers only were sent, would they be packed safely enough. I've had speakers damaged in transit a few times.

Tell me about it Geoff, i've had a pair of Goodmans 1220c in 172 ARU cabs smashed with rough handling, thank god those cast drivers survived the trauma,
there's nothing better than having a pair of them vintage bad boys in a headlock, sadly thats a feeling the majority peeps with modern svelte speakers don't get to experience, i've only one more dream, thats to have a pair of Altec 604 G's under my armpits one day.

Andy, the 604G. Isn't that the driver used in the Altec Stonehenge? I have heard these coaxial drivers and they were impressive, but did not quite impress me as much as the Tannoys of the time. I'd imagine you'd pay a small fortune for a pair now.

By the way, a couple of years ago I sold a pair of triaxial 12" University Model 312 Diffaxial speaker units, probably dating from the sixties. They sounded amazing, dual cone, with a coaxial phenolic dome tweeter and alnico magnets. University were a branch of Altec, but their products are extremely rare in this country.

Yes, it occurred to me that it would sound at its best at the moment of switch-on as you're bent down, head 'twixt the speakers. It's all downhill after that though!
