Hmmm :hmm:

You may have a point there, but like anything you need to sell at the right time if you are going to ;)

Yep, that's the truth - and I'm sure I'll sell at entirely the wrong point, as usual!

I have got mine and my wife's initials on my car and I just about to put my wifes plate back on her car which has been on retention for a few years it just has her initials on it and starts with H1 ***

there is old Renault around our way that has the number plate A30, I hate to think what that's worth but it might pay off most of my morgage

it's only a bit of fun

My old one went U/S when they changed my electricity meter so I replaced with a Russ Andrew's job which is just a solidly made 4 way block it doesn't do mains cleaning or surge suppresion. Anyway if I still prefer the RA block the Belkin can go on the home theatre system which is still using crappy generic blocks.

It doesn't really have a 'sound' but swap in a standard 'Woolworth's' type block and you immediately lose bass weight and definition and hear general 'noise' increase significantly so it must be doing something.

In 1957 ELAC patents an electro-magnetic pick-up which established them as a world leader in pickups. They license it to companies around the world including Shure. Further development of this technology led to what becomes known as Moving-Magnet cartridge systems or simply MM. By the late 1960s, ELAC hi-fi magnet pick-ups had tracking forces below 10 mN (approximately 1 gm). :)

Hi Shane,

They look interesting and decent value for what they are, so perhaps they are worth a punt?

If you do decide to go for them, then make sure you buy both remaining sets, as in terms of achieving sonic synergy (and therefore the best sound), it's always best to have the same make of interconnects running from your source to preamp, and preamp to power amp.

Good luck if you decide to buy them!

Marco.

MartinT

Careful, Shane - they're unshielded. Probably ok for line level use but do not try to use them in phono positions.

The Mark Grant HD cables do work well with Crofts old and new Shane - I know the constant plug (inappropriate word - apologies Marco ;)) or recommendations for these is boring, but credit where it's well due. Thanks to David (Snapper), who decided he didn't like them under his Linn Keltiks, I use the same supports under the Atacama stands of my Ditton 15XRs.

They made quite a difference (as, in my experience, Mana always does) when I installed them, tightening and extending the bass, and improving overall clarity - basically, by allowing the speakers to behave optimally as designed, through them interacting less with the room :)

As for pricing them 'optimistically', the original retail price I think was around £250, and as they are long discontinued and very hard to find now (simply because most people who own them wouldn't part with them), I think that the price is fair.

As for pricing them 'optimistically', the original retail price I think was around £250, and as they are long discontinued and very hard to find now (simply because most people who own them wouldn't part with them), I think that the price is fair.

Marco.

I totally agree, i'll never part with mine but £632 Bin , i think he'll be waiting quite a considerable time to sell at that price.

Mind you, if they start selling for £1000 i may change my mind... 3000k towards a new arm

I had a pair of 15XRs with the ABR back in the day. (My ex still uses 'em, I think . . . ). Lovely speakers - warm and full sounding. The Celestion badge on the grill could rotate for when used as a "bookshelf" speaker . . . :D

The SP25 was my first turntable; way back in 1968. I think mine was the Mk.II; from memory it looked identical to the item for sale.

Oh those were the days when you got a proper well written instruction book with photographs, not the single piece of A4 you get today. The instruction manuals for the Ferrograph reel-to-reel recorders and for the Garrard 301 turntables were hard-back books!

It might be 'new', or unused but storing it in the loft after all these years doesn't seem to have done it any good. The polystyrene inserts used to prevent the platter moving look like they have been damp traps, judging by the corrosion of the chassis.

An interesting piece of nostalgia, but I doubt if it will fetch much. But then again eBay is a crazy place and lately people will pay silly prices.

Sorry to hear that Paul - you must be spitting feathers!

I'm not that conversant with the rules and regulations for sellers, but I would certainly report this incident to eBay. Sadly you won't get your B&O system, but the seller might be banned if he has broken the rules.

That has been my only bad experience with eBay. I 'won' an item with a bid that was considerably less than what the item was worth. The seller obviously thought the same and refused to complete the transaction: he became incommunicado. I reported it to eBay and the seller was banned.

Sadly, I don't think that can be done if you have not completed the payment procedure.

There is no need to contact ebay by phone, they will only say try and work it out with the seller and if you can't raise a dispute. The ability to leave negative feedback is not dependent on whether the buyer has paid. However you should raise a dispute first and give them the opportunity to complete the transaction and only then if they do not complete should you leave them negative feedback as you are perfectly entitled to do.

Well, I couldn't do that for my case of the seller not completing the sale. The 'leave feedback' page was inactive and remained so after reporting the case to eBay.

Perhaps things have changed; it was four years ago.

OOOOH! - They do look interesting.. Nice sensitivity and size too!

They look to be in excellent cosmetic condition - and hence very attractive.

But - I am however a little puzzed. There is a photograph of a crossover network and one set of spreaker terminals are fitted. The BBC LS5/8 was designed by the BBC without a crossover: it was intended to be used with a 'frequency splitting' Quad 405 amp, the AM8/16, and the two would have been connected via the (now unused) 3-pin XLR connector.

I suspect someone has obtained a pair of these speakers from the BBC sans the AM8/16 amps and have fitted a third-party crossover. No idea how this sounds or if the crossover has the same crossover frequency and slope as that of the AM8/16.

Hi Andy,

I didn't know that the LS5/8 designs could be made available in a 'passive' option with the PM510 crossover. I should have read the eBay listing a little more carefully!

However to describe them as "BBC Studio Monitor Speakers", is a little disingenuous. The BBC never intended (as far as I know) the LS5/8 to be used without an active crossover, as the following explain (especially the second link):

http://www.mhennessy3.f9.co.uk/rogers/ls58.htm

http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/1979-22.pdf.

I have been after a pair of genuine LS5/8 (with a pair of AM8/16 amps) for a long time. Never seen a pair come up in good enough condition alas!

SPEAKER CABLES: Here at Charles Fraudio the art of design is unique. Many other manufacturers of boxes that produce noise allow the consumer to choose which cables can be attach to their speaker boxes. We found it almost impossible to train them to do so, therefore to improve the interface between cable and speaker thus enhancing noise quality, and frankly in an attempt to stop them making a beeline for the door as soon as they clapped eyes on our stunning speakers, we have super glued them to the speaker terminals so they can't get away...

With great difficulty! The DV505 had a dead weight of around 1Kg; sufficiently heavy that it could be just placed on the arm board of say a Thorens TD124 or next to a Garrard TT without using fixings. And stay there whilst the arm was being cued, lowered and raised!

Hmm! I 'won' a Marantz 10B on eBay a few years ago. My winning bid was the rediculously low sum of £205, far less than my limit, but a winning bid nonetheless.

They are fantastic speakers, and may qualify "Best selling JBL's" as there were many of these in studios all over the states, especially in the northern states. FWO Bauch also supplied a number of these for studio applications over here. Price a bit high though, last pair I saw were around £2200 in perfect condition about 3 years ago. A lot of the better radio stations had them as well. Need a good amp as well. Silver wound coils would be worth a bit by themselves.

Mirror image cabinets? - the only L200 models I remember had 2 units: horn above the bass unit. Only ever saw one pair of Jubals for sale in Germany a long time ago, for about £1400 equiv. too much, too far then.

Bit like Berkeleys really, sold as floor standers then. People now tend to put them on stands. When these were all sold, there weren't any really good stands about, and wonder if they were all "tailored" to be plonked on the floor. "Spikes" were for women's shoes.
