The 33 in stock form is very constricted on modern wide-bandwidth sources and recordings, but it CAN be breathed on for well under £25 as long as you can solder. The results are charming, but FAR more capable. I'm ignoring the well reported Net-Audio updates as, in effect, these turn the preamp into something else altogether (and fully up to date in fairnes). Me, I've put my Dada updated 33 with the 303 in the office and it sounds fab to me, on vinyl too (I've kept the 68K phono loading)

Hope this sort of helps anyone looking for a bargain preamp to do a little bit of work on. The 33 is unfairly dismissed IMO, but with a little effort can be transformed into something really lovely to use and listen through.....

I have placed bids with some unrealistic prices, and still ended up getting outbid . The most memorable one s when I bid U$2000 for a Micro Seike MAX237 tonearm with just 10 seconds to go and with the highest bid price standing at U$1300 at the time. I ended up getting outbid at the last second by the seller Foxtran on eBay. He put the arm back on sale for U$2500 about a month later, but offered it to me at U$2300. I was of course looking to buy it and put it back on sale myself .

I agree, I'm always wary when this happens, especially if there is a big gap between my bid and one BELOW it. Smacks of a shill bid to get the price up.

Generally when you see a price like that it's because they have agreed a deal outside eBay but don't want to cancel the listing until the deal goes through. So they update with a silly price, then if it sells off eBay the listing will disappear or if not it will revert back to its original price.

I could agree with that & it does make some sense ;)

Unfortunately I don't think it's the case with this listing, you see I'd have expected it to be "revised by the seller" & this listing hasn't been edited in any way (as it always states revised if it has been).

It's a total joke, now i have to switch my feedback to 'private', why the hell do i bother being so efficient & Meticulous with people!..disheartening, but not the end of the world as ive decided never to sell through auction anymore.

Darn tootin, i'm convinced there aren't that many honest folks on ebay lately. Had 2 buyers contact me to claim items supposedly damaged in the post, i apologise and ask them to reurn for full refund (less their return postage) and then nothing more is heard from them. In one instance the buyer actually suggested that i just make her a 'gift' refund for her time and trouble and she'd say no more... effectively after a post-sale kickback. Again as an honest guy who likes a bit of box swapping this simply does my head in and i'll never sell via auction again.

Hi Dunc,

YES, if they've been fully tested on a professional valve tester by someone who knows what they're doing. Good, original GEC tubes sound utterly fantastic, in a way which makes all other equivalents sound broken.

But a BIG NO, if they haven't been tested, as you could buy them, plug them in, and they could instantly go pop and/or sound total shite! ;)

Therefore, as a seasoned NOS tube buyer, from eBay or wherever, my golden rule now is only to spend big money on FULLY TESTED TUBES. Therefore, as these GECs are untested, I'd leave them well alone.

Marco.

For those, like myself, who are valve virgins, it would be very helpful if a member who has experience aplenty with valves and valve kit could write a guide for dummies describing the advantages and pitfalls of owning valve equipment. Things like bias setup etc are anathema to me and to some other members I suspect. Also a simplified guide to choosing replacement valves both new and NOS with recommendations etc.

Having heard Mark's (Dingdong's) WAD monoblocs recently I'm absolutely sold on valve amplification but I'm extremely nervous about choosing this route because of my ignorance of the subject and because of some of the horror stories I've read (failing valves taking out amps for instance).

As an example of what I am going on about, here are a few likely queries concerning valves and valve equipment:

What kind of lifetime can one expect from a new valve?
With the previous question in mind, does it make economic sense to buy secondhand valves?
Why do valves have to be matched?
Why are some valves better than others?
Why are valves so expensive?
Could there ever be a situation where valve amplification would not be advisable?
Do transistorised Class A amps exhibit a similar sound profile to valve amps?
Where do well designed Class D amps fit in to all this?
Are the running costs of valve amps prohibitive?
Are Class A/B amps a good compromise?

Over to whomever wishes to take up the baton, and perhaps it could be made a sticky...

Good suggestion, as NOS Russian tubes can very often sound just as good as the more 'desirable' American and European ones, for a fraction of the price!

However, if I were Dunc, I'd be tempted by these:

Reid Malenfant

No service manual for it i'm afraid, but I reckon an arm upgrade should be possible :) Unlike the Techie the AP2600 has one rather massive motor unit instead of it all being in seperate bits. In all honesty I haven't taken a close look at the internal electronics as mine works perfectly still :eyebrows:

Give it a clean & then see what it does, I doubt you'll need to do a thing to it to get some serious sounds out of it. But maybe a recap might be in order just to put the icing on the cake...

Personalised registration plates are, in my opinion, the height of vulgar ostentation. Who cares if the letters match your initials?

They may have some investment value. One of my late father's cars happened to carry registration plate 1 RHW. These were neither his initials, nor was he interested in such things. He did however have them transferred to successive cars, simply because it was an easy number to remember. Some years later (this would have been about 25 - 30 years ago), he was approached by someone whose initials were 'RHW' and was offered £3500 for the number. My father declined the offer!

If we are on a thread drift about registration numbers this one made me smile at the time.

An unusual registration number ! - T1 WAT (http://www.flickr.com/photos/yo43yo/4990691389/) by Mark G. in England (http://www.flickr.com/people/yo43yo/), on Flickr

We where in Bamburgh in Northumberland for a few days away (ages ago, September 2010) and it's never easy finding a parking space in the village centre near the Victoria hotel in the evening and I spotted a space at the same time as the driver of the Black Discovery, the Discovery beat me to the space... then I noticed the registration number

(Sneaky picture taken of discovery reg number with mobile phone while no one around :eyebrows:)

If people dont know where Bamburgh is it is here,

Lovely beaches and scenery.

google maps street view of that very street which has a different black discovery parked in the same place, spooky or what.

.. 'TWAT 1' would be most appropriate for people of such an unfortunate inclination ;)

Well, you can stick it up yer jacksies, personally (sic) I like private registrations... :sofa: The one on my current car I bought for my daughter when she was born, and represents her birthday and initials - I think it is a really sweet gesture - when I buy her her first car, it will have a (then vintage) registration number on it that is very personal to her. (Plus having it on my car now causes much merriment as people try to work out the relevance to me...) I also have a very good one for my own initials, but that is on my wife's car, and again causes head-scratching as people can see it is a private number but bears no relation to her. :)

The figure might have been £3000 (I was rather a long time ago), but my father simply couldn't be fussed with all the bureaucracy and paperwork required to change a car's plate.

I reckon that "1 RHW" would be worth well over £10k these days - I'm no expert, just a hunch - but I love seeing a "classic" plate.

I see having a personal plate as rather like having an e-mail address for life. I never need change my plate irrespective of what car I drive and I never need change my e-mail address no matter which ISP I'm with or where I move. As for the paperwork, say what?

Yes it's not to be taken seriously, but lighten up guys, it's only a bit of fun!

I'm sorry Alex, but I can see both points of view

I think I'd rather spend the wonga on something other than a bit of plastic at the end of the day, you know, something useful ;)

Fair 'nough matey - but in reality registrations are a pretty good investment these days. :)

Hmmm :hmm:

You may have a point there, but like anything you need to sell at the right time if you are going to ;)
