Liz Garbus’ documentary concerns the professional and private life of the late singer, pianist, composer and civil rights activist Nina Simone. Using archive footage, photos, recordings and interviews with family, friends, associates and admirers, the film is both a warts-and-all study of a remarkable artist – and remarkably troubled person – and a chronicle of an era of unrest, turmoil and change.
