It is my great pleasure to announce that NEBO 7will take place on Saturday 21st May 2016. In response to some of the problems we had with the previous venue i have sought out and found a great little place in The Chimneys Hotel in Blackhall Colliery Co Durham. I have secured two sensibly sized rooms which should accommodate our needs for yet another great meet. There are rooms available at excellent rates should anyone wish to stay overnight with secured parking. Access is excellent as are the facilities. Hot and cold food will be available from the bar. I am once again looking forwards to meeting regular attendees and new faces. Please feel free to share this information on other forums or wherever you feel it may be seen. Everyone is welcome. Please get in touch if you want more information.

See you down there?

Not TOO many Geordies at Nebo 6, but "more than sufficient" Jocks! :)

One of the few LPs I kept when CD took off in the 80's when as a skint student I sold the (almost) lot was an album by "The Heavy Metal Kids",which was Gary Holton's band (left).
Dunno why, that photo took me back to a time in the past...
Didnt know he passed in 1985, just found that out....thanks Wikipedia. :-/

Ken's was there but not really suitable for the lash ups the way he has it wired, so Steve's PL 71 was drafted in for that duty.

It's a Dynaco ST70 with a Joe Curcio driver stage and regulated power supply. I built it about 20 odd years ago - very high input impedance so works well with passives.

There will be Edingdales there too.

Everyone seems to happy with them as reference.

I hope to be able to join the meet and bring with me a pair the MKII Edingdales that are currently in fine tuning development stage. Barring a couple of drivers as back-up spares for existing Edingdale owners should they ever require a replacement driver the original Mark Audio mid-woofers are no longer available so Scott and I (mainly Scott) have been searching for a suitable replacement.

This would be a good opportunity to listen to the speakers side by side and compare how the new models compare to the originals. I don't now have a pair the originals for reference. However, Chris (Stratemangler) who has been a great help to date in the fine tuning listening sessions, believes the MKII are better and I believe myself that to be the case.

It has been a long and arduous task finding a replacement 6½" mid-woofer to replace the original budget Mark Audio #6 driver but there has been a clear winner from the prototypes we have built. The up side is the new speakers will be around 2dB more efficient than the originals and a relative easy and benign load to drive with low SET power amps. Any way you guys will no doubt be the best judge.

Hi Stephen
It's Pro-Jects flagship model pre amp and it gives me the balanced outputs I need.
It gets some cracking reviews and I've heard the whole RS Box Series a couple of times, so thought I would give it a go. The RS (Reference Series) Phono stage and DAC also get great reviews, they are under consideration longer term, they all connect up using balanced connections.
I think Pro-ject, having introduced some high end turntables over recent years, decided they needed to offer other components at the same level, they are small, but perfectly formed.

See you got the Denon's, be interested in hearing those.

vinyljunky
15-03-2016, 22:15
Yeah ken the denons have balanced outputs as well we could partner these with your new pre

RichB
15-03-2016, 22:23
My Benchmark DAC1 HDR will be looking for a new home shortly. It has become surplus to requirements. I'll put a sales thread up in due course but that has balanced outputs and an analogue input.

It's a good pre and I have been happy with mine for 18 months. It benefits greatly from a decent PSU and some decent valves. The best valves I have found so far are the Reflektors. The main reason I am getting rid of mine is to reduce the box count. By upgrading to the KIN I can lose three boxes (2 X PSU + phono stage).

There is an interesting thread on the Pre Box RS over on the Wam.
Edited to add that there are some internal shots (I know people like these) on my advert in the classifieds section.

Qwin
16-03-2016, 07:33
Steven - They would need to be balanced inputs, but yep we could give it a go given the time.

Kevin - I would have had that amp off you if it had been in Black.
All my gear used to be Silver, changing and evolving bit at a time over a period, it some how all ended up Black.
I want to keep it all the same colour now.
+1 on the PSU upgrade, I've read the WAM thread.

Rich - The Benchmark is a cracking DAC/Pre, I will probably go for the Pro-ject RS Phono and DAC boxes as these both have balanced inputs and outputs.

CageyH
16-03-2016, 08:00
Ken,

No problem. I just wanted to share my findings with this pre amp. The later model comes with a mini XLR style power connector, so if fitting a different PSU from the Pro-Ject one, you will probably have to get a special lead made. If you are looking at more than one Pro-Ject box, then it may be worth looking at the Pro-Ject PSU that will run up to 4 boxes.

If you are thinking of a DAC later, you are aware that there is a Pre with the DAC built in?
I was really tempted by the Phono Box RS as it seems really flexible with regard to cartridge characteristic matching.

Qwin

Yes I'm aware of the DC input socket change, I will probably go with a different power supply anyway, I've seen inside the Pro-ject and for what's in there I think it's over priced. Yes the Phono is very flexible having 3 gain settings and with the two different sensitivity levels on the Pre inputs it gives you 6 output levels to choose from when using their Phono/Pre combination, that should cope with level matching for most cartridges.
I have been told the combined Pre/DAC is not quite as good as the separates, which is what you would expect.
The combined unit is valve output only, Separate DAC has a switch to choose Valve/Solid state output.
Phono stage is solid state only.

Now residing in the living room with the Regas, streaming via Chromecast and with a CD player/Virgin tivo also hooked up.

In the spare room is a vinyl based system with a pair of Edingdales, NVA amps, Croft pre/phono stage and a hifimediy sabre USB dac/desktop pc and a chair for one.

How bigs your spare room Rich with the Eddingdales?

Twice as long as the living room but just as wide. I have them going widthways using half of the room length for the listening area. They're approx 6.5ft apart and less than a foot from the rear wall. I don't have it blasting in that room as it adjoins a neighbours bedroom but at low level its perfectly nice.

Eddies don't take much to drive like,

Can't put me finger on it but I am as worried as I am excited (and that's a lot) about Nebo 7. The upcoming events is lining itself up to be the best yet. I have been contacted by some new blood who will in my opinion inject new interest and enthusiasm into Nebo.which is the excitement of Nebo. However, it's my job to shoehorn it into the time allotted. I have learned so much since the first couple of Nebo meets meetings that the attitude of "let it roll" is the bringer of best results. With this in mind guys as ever we will roll through the day. No major constraints other than respecting those playing systems whilst you are setting up your own by not suddenly turning up the volume of those in preparation. As ever, we will do it !!!!

You can only do so much Steve, organising the venue and getting the word out is sufficient.

NEBO is sufficiently well developed by now that I think you can depend upon the attendees to be responsible marshalls on the day.

We all want to hear the kit after all so a few simple ground rules is enough.

Just to remind folks that i need a PM to confirm what attendees are bringing just so i know what we have. My plan is to roll through the day going with form an orderly cue method rather than being too formal. If attendee's bring equipment that may take a lot of setting up then we will then play systems that are ready to go. This should lessen down time and keep the day moving. As ever my job will be merely to fire the starting gun on the day as events tend to take their own course. I really am looking forwards to NEBO 7 and meeting up with those who have become part of the fabric of Nebo and to some new kids on the block who will be showing some interesting amps and systems. I can't wait. In addition can i remind anyone who has a Facebook account that Nebo also has a Facebook page should you want to keep a breast of things there. [I]See you down there!

Well I'll start the ball rolling, I'll bring my modified Technics Sl1210 Mk2, (LDA psu, AT1005mk2 arm, custom armboard, Vantage bearing) it will be set up with a Denon DL110 and a at440mla so if any of the phono stage affecionados want to go MC they'll need to bring a cartridge/headshell with them of their preference.

Amplifier will be an enormous Onkyo A9000R.

Speaker wise I can bring either the Edingdales or some Rega RS5. Colin mentioned bringing his new Edingdales for a side by side comparison but is it overkill having 2 lots of Edingdales there? Would anyone prefer I brought the Regas to give us greater variety instead? Thoughts on this one please guys? I can only manage one pair of speakers in the car.

Steve, I'll bring the LS3 cable you loaned me which might come in useful on the day and a pair of SSC interconnects in case anyone wants to hook anything up to my amp.

Ken - if you could remember those Rega and NVA cables I loaned you they might also come in handy

I'll bring a Chromecast Audio (subject to there being decent WiFi at the venue) which might give some light entertainment for a £15 bit of kit.

Basically happy for anyone to lash up whatever they like to this system, phono stages/CD players etc.

Just to confirm that I shall be bringing the new Edingdale MKII speakers.

We have now sorted the crossover and they are sounding very good indeed. Though the new speakers are 96dB efficiency and primarily designed to be a very easy load for low powered SET amps (300b SET, 2A3 SET etc) just to show there are no mismatch of driving these with a high powered SS amp I shall also bring my Musical Fidelity A300 amp, TVC based pre and AH! Njoe Tjoeb reference CD player.
So if Gazza is bringing his Longdog 300b amp that would be great as a direct comparison against the MF.

Hi Rich,

I think Steve asked for PM's, that's how I responded.

Yes, I'll bring the leads you mention, plus the IEC mains lead I have of yours, they are still in the carrier bag I meant to give you at the last NEBO, I'm a Gold Fish.

Maybe cadge the use of the Rega's to work with my new Pro-Ject Pre and Gainclone?
I'm not bringing the active Yammies as I'm between mods and won't be ready.

I have been over at Colin's this morning, putting in ethernet cabling.
After the work it was sit down and get an earful of the Edingdale MkIIs, and they sound f***ing awesome. John Martyn's Solid Air on CD, an album I am very, very familiar with, was played start to finish, and I have never heard it sound better.
I just hope that the half speed mastered vinyl I have turning up soon (next week?) sounds as good, because it will be a let down if it doesn't.

Followed up by Nils Lofgren's Acoustic Live, on vinyl, and again a superb and coherent, musical experience.

I really like the MkIIs - they do the business :)

They don't sound half bad do they? I don't know if Colin told you Chris, but I tweaked the value of the primary (inductor) on the midbass array slightly about a fortnight back; I haven't had chance to hear them with that mod yet, but Colin said it gave them that little bit of extra 'air' through the upper mids / lower HF.

Last year I bought a tonearm cable second hand from this forum which I'd completely forgotten about. A Wynchwood Audio cable comprised of Vandamme silver low-cap I think and Neutrik profi plugs. I'd previously been unable to use this due to not having sufficient clearance under the modified Technics Sl1210 deck to accommodate it. The thought had crossed my mind to change the connector at the tonearm end to a right angle however I'd stashed the cable away and pretty much forgotten about it, reverting back to the original 70s cable which came with my AT1005mk2 arm. Since acquiring new boots for the Techie, the deck now has that vital few centimetres clearance so when having a bit of a sort out today I decided to give the Wynchwood cable another shot.

Result! Stonking improvement all round. Wish I'd done this sooner. All the improvements and mods to the deck are more apparent and the clatter of bass guitar on some Fugazi has a tone I recognise and love as a bass player.

For interconnects I'd say get your hands on some of that Vandamme silver low-cap stuff and some Profi plugs and prepare to be surprised.

Deck now sounding very nice indeed and I hope will give a good account of itself at NEBO

Colin did say something about tweaking inductor values.
All I can report back is that things sounded mighty fine a few weeks ago (my comment was something along the lines of things being pretty well "there"), and from what I heard yesterday the tweaking has been beneficial.

One of the things that really hit me yesterday was the involvement the sound has now.
I was drawn into the recording, and listening to every last note as it died away.
Nothing drew unnecessary attention to itself, and nothing was missing.
Ultimately I forgot about the speakers and just became totally involved with the music, which is really what it's all about.

I'll have to start saving up ......

Saturday is looming and i am really looking forwards to meeting up with you all again and to meeting some new faces too. The Chimneys is a great little gaff so please make full use of the bar and the cuisine. The food is rather good and the beer rather palatable. Be good though because the landlady has the legal right to ask anyone misbehaving to leave. Probably me I would think ha ha. There is some great kit coming again so it will be a pretty packed day. Have a great day guys.

Looking forward to it, chaps. So what's everyone bringing? Might be a good idea to post a little shortlist :)

I'm 'travelling light' this year, so will simply be bringing my modded Goldpoint passive, further 'tweaked' from last year, the latest version of Chris' LDR, and my Paul Hynes MC head amp, should anyone wish to hear it in the context of a T/T set-up. However, I'll also have some of Macca's motley collection of Pishanto with me :eyebrows: so having a listen to that in a different environment should be interesting.

Oh, and I'll be bringing a mate with me from Scotland, Snapper, who most of the Scottish mafia have already met, but the Geordie crew haven't, and I'm sure he'll be made most welcome and will enjoy the day!

Let's make this NEBO better than ever, guys! :yesbruv:

Bringing the Radford, one of the lads wanted to hear it against his Dynaco and also a Pioneer valve receiver from the 60's which although not esoteric as most of the kit on show, may raise a few smiles ,if there is time to fire it up[no such thing as a poor EL 84 amp]

Yes, I'll be bringing my modestly modified Technics with a choice of AT440mla in MG 50 headshell and a Denon DL-110 HOMC in a Sumiko. If anyone wants MC they'll need to bring it and a headshell ideally although I do have a spare ATC headshell there if necessary.

Great stuff, Mick. Just finished rebuilding the Dynaco a few days ago - thought it deserved a new chassis and 240v mains transformer - it had been running off a step-down and variac for years. Don't really know how it sounds as I don't have any decent speakers with passive x-overs, so will be interesting to hear it with some decent speakers. Steve (Floyddroid) - you weren't thinking about bringing your nice new Q Acoustic speakers were you??? :eyebrows:I was thinking of maybe buying a pair if they match well with the Dynaco. No pressure - we can always arrange a get together at some other time.

I'll bring my Graham Slee phono stage and my Jungson JA-99c poweramp, it's an interesting beast with no negative feedback. Balanced input only, but I'll bring adapter cables, too. Might be fun to compare with Martin's XTZ. :)

See you tomorrow.

Calming pre-Nebo nerves with my good friend George Ballantine and listening to Gorecki's 3rd symphony in me cave. Just checking out the thread here and i have to say i am well chuffed with how things are shaping up. I am really proud of the macro community that has grown as a result of an idea i had whilst chatting with my friend Neil Blackwood three and a half years ago. NEBO is hardly Scalford Hall, Whittlebury or the Bristol show. Far from it amigos. Just some great dudes enjoying music and Hi-Fi without major corporate backing or input. That's not to say we are adverse to having the smaller manufactures showing their wares!
