My interest has been piqued by listening to some of my friends CD's. I'd really like some suggestions for predominently heavily based cello and piano classical music. Apart from enjoying listening to these instruments I'd also like some reference pieces to see how both my valve and solid state system sound when playing these instruments. :)

is a piano accompaniment a must have?

Bach's solo cello suites are great! I like these ...

I've always fancied the Lynn Harrell / Vladimir Ashkenazy set of the Beethoven cello sonatas on Decca - any good?

If piano isn't required I'm quite a fan of Vivaldi's cello concertos when performed more energetically by some of the less staid period instrument groups out there.

I forgot, I have a CD called Napoleon's cellist, it's pieces by a little known composer who taught Bonaparte (whose name eludes me) but the works are very pleasant and if you want to listen to some little known workmanlike classical period music you cant go wrong.

Sony recording of Yo Yo Ma's Bach Cello Suites. Exquisite but not perfect.

I love the Bach Cello Suites. I have them variously played by Starker, Rostropovich, Ma and by Tortellier.

Bach's the boyo for me. I recall once hearing the famous one on some perspex open baffle speakers with DSP at Heathrow show some years ago and it was bloody marvellous!

Ok years old now but I don't know why I didn't mention an album I've got called Napoleon's Cellist, I forget the composer's name but they are very nice pieces, there are hundreds of not quite so famous composers out there whose work deserves more visibility and some of the not-so-major labels have done a really good job of making their work available.
