View Full Version : Testing a hypothesis

Tannoy speakers are crap. Especially old ones with new crossovers.

The Technics SL1210 is a crappy DJ deck and any attempts to dress it up are nothing more than turd polishing. As for the Timestep, it makes absolutely no difference over the standard PSU.

Oh and Marco the 'fat controller' is stone deaf.

My young brother has Tannoy speakers ,he doesn't have a Technics deck , I think he uses
Numark and he has a Denon integrated amp.
Sometimes I will call him up and say "I've got this cartridge I'm not using anymore do
you want it (Clearaudio Arium Beta S) or you want this pre-amp (NAC 42) and power supply
(HiCap) you'll need to get your own power amp." (Please note that I'm going to give these items
to him for free.)

The answer is always "no I'm ok, I don't need any of that"

So my conclusion is that he's happy with what he has ,and that my friends is no bad thing.

Really? So I suppose it's not correct to say "An hotel" then..

Well, if we have to be serious, "an 'otel" would sound a bit precious if said posh rather than sloppy, "an hotel" would be good modern pronunciation, and "a hotel" just plain difficult to say.

It amazes me how some manage to litter their speech with glottal stops which I find harder that the correct dental stops - "better" I find easier to say than "be'er" (be?er).

Not in my neck of the woods. An before words beginning withA E I O U everything else is A. So it a Hotel. However if its dialect or accent Otel then it would an, but as this is not proper English I suppose it could be either A or An as the user decides....clear ;)

OK, you guys have been stabbing around in the dark on this one. Hôtel is a French word in origin and some posh English people choose to acknowledge its etymology by messing around with English speech patterns. Unlike French, all vowel sounds are preceded by an as the indefinite article, without exception. French on the other hand has words beginning with an H falling into two groups depending on whether the H would have been pronounced in the language of origin.

In English it is a hotel.

According to the new O.E.D., a hotel is the accepted norm, but an hotel is occasionally (and correctly, one presumes,) used.

Anyway, this hypothesis has now degenerated into a lowpothesis.

"As for the Timestep, it makes absolutely no difference over the standard PSU."

The name Timestep could give the idea that it was some kind of BPM synchroniser,
in which case a more "DJ" inclined user might conclude that it wasn't really bringing
anything to the party. Not sure if this helps Steve with the hypothesis.

Thanks for the explanation. I have always though it odd that the past tense could be used of the future!

I remember learning some basic German when living in Germany. After a lesson a Brit said to me of "der, die, das". "They (the Germans) don't know either. Do what they do, just say "d" ("duh")"!

English is a crazy language.

Surely it's only the conditional ('wish') which can use the past tense to indicate the future (e.g. if I won the lottery.....)

'I thought this was.....' is indeed the past, indicating that your opinion has changed. If you say ' I think this is (simple present) you're stating a current opinion. The first utterance is, of course, tongue in cheek.

Crazy English, yes, but most of it is logical, which is more than I can say for the black art of Hifi, (and, of course, the spelling of English vocabulary)

Irish is worse. A friend of mine was on a high street in Northern Ireland where cars may park in bays at right angles to the flow of the traffic. Most folk drive in and reverse out. A woman was heard to say to her husband, the driver:

"Go ahead backwards, there's nothing in front of you."

Entirely logical, when you understand the vernacular!

That is the Third Conditional - for unlikely occurances.

The tense shift also occurs with reported speech.

"I will bring a few CDs to the show next week."

He said that he would bring a few CDs to the show next week.

Would here is essentially the past for of will.

Indeed it is, and if you were reporting on a statement, that report HAS to be made in the past tense. Quite logical, surely !

We need some extra Goldmundists... ;)

I was once a Sugdenite.

Owned an A48 for 30 years. Still beat a budget amp when I sold it.

I wouldn't describe my self as ruthless as this implies an element of expediency that I'd not be comfortable with. I'm merciless with those in my line of work who abuse their authority though.

I certainly wouldn't screw over one of my mates. For sure the forum, the domain and the hosting of this site are registered in my name and I pay the bills but Marco has been helping with some of the costs. Also his day-to-day contributions and management of this place far outweigh mine.

As such we can be regarded as equals.
