Not really that unusual Al, it was the forerunner to the VHS/Betamax video cassette generation.

Probably quite rare as I image most have been thrown away now. I think that version is only monochrome video, it uses a helical scanning head to effectively give a very high tape speed.

It is indeed a Sony EIAJ monochrome helical scan machine that uses half inch tape.

We have quite a few of these at my workplace for transfer of legacy material.

Very expensive in their day and the tapes suffer hugely from sticky shed / lubrication failure and are thus often extremely difficult to play.

The timebase stability is also very poor so we use high end timebase correctors achieve stable replay.

When I first started shooting video documentaries it was on the Porta-Pack version of this machine. We used tonrazor blade edit and there was a 17 frame sound offset. We copied onto a machine that had the audio head moved to compensate, edit then copy back. The build up of noise was horrendous.
