Open reel machines were solid and reliable and were used extensively in television and electronic post production.

Not the best resolution - more to come in future but here is just one example of a full bandwidth open reel analogue videotape machine with a response not of 20 hz - 20 khz but 0 - 6.0 MHz!!

Great post. Love it. They even used open reel tape in the Italian Job for the Turin traffic control system :)

That is soooo coool!

Did anyone see those Penny & Giles PCM recorders on ebay a while back? - I was tempted but they looked way too complicated for me to get working.

LOL... yes, I remember cake box cartridges. Big things with a twist handle in the middle. You had to put them in to what looked like a upturned washing machine.

I did work experience at a construction place when I was 16. Their computers were so olde, but it was great fun. Their accounts were all input through a Commodore Pet.
