Hi..

I know some of you guys are using the Tape Project tapes.. What have you got? It's something I'd love to have in the future.

I bet the Canned Heat and John Lee Hooker one sounds utterly superb!

I've got the Sonny Rollins "Saxophone Colossus" and Jimmy Smith's "The Sermon" on Tape Project. Just awaiting a protection master 15ips tape of Led Zep II to arrive. Missed out on a Miles Davis protection master 15 ips tape of "Elevator to the scaffold".

Having looked at this now, there are over 300 title available made from original masters on 15 ips R2R from companies other than tape project.com

Alan,

There's quite a bit on ebay as well, some of it reputable. The 2nd generation safety copy of Led Zep II, which I got from Russia, is great. Got some safety masters of more hard bop jazz coming from the USA too. I don't buy anything unless the masters have been stored ok.

If it's ultimate quality recordings you are looking for......the ones that you cannot make on a domestic / semi-pro machine.....talk to me.

May I ask whats a safety copy

I am not entirely sure BUT I suspect it's a copy of one of The Tape Project tapes (or similar) done on a domestic machine.

If this is the case unless the record machine has been calibrated entirely to the piece of tape stock actually in use then it is not worth any more than the raw tape stock it is recorded on.

At the VERY best you would be looking at a DOUBLING of the noise floor from the original unless Dolby A or SR PROPERLY aligned was employed in the duplication process.

Thanks.. so a first generation domestic copy of a master copy of a master.

Yes indeed....

On any recording of this kind that advertises as being anything near a master copy then I would expect a full set of line up and calibration tones at the head of the recording (1 khz, 10 khz, 15 khz, 20hz, 40 hz along with Dolby tones as/if required ) to enable full replay line up.

It staggers me that the Tape Project tapes DO NOT contain these at the head of each reel AS STANDARD for the price they are charging !

Instead you are expected to purchase a line up reel for nearly a hundred dollars which by it's very nature is inevitably inaccurate as it was NOT made at the TIME of the original recording.

Analogue machines drift.....CONSTANTLY.... which is why line up tones were recorded in the industry.

Tape Project tapes are industry prices (almost - to give you an idea a master tape made in a studio facility supplied to a vinyl mastering facility would cost around £850 per reel).

They should have industry standard line up.

A safety copy is not necessairily made on a domestic or semi pro machine. I used to, as did many other producers, always ran a tape copy of the master in the studio. Also, when cutting, I ran a production master tape, in parallel to the cutting lathe to produce a pre eqed prodution master, this was often used for recuts and cassette duplication.

The safety copies I have bought have tones and have been stored tails out in climate controlled rooms. They come from defunct studios, radio stations and recording engineers private collections. They sound fine at any rate.

If Stewart (Lodgesound) has some other tapes, then I'll certainly be interested.
