View Full Version : PEBO (aka Pelaw Bake Off aka mini NEBO 5.1)

Right chaps, since NEBO 6 is still a while off and a few of the more local folks have expressed an interest for a smaller scale get together I can arrange a little meet up at the Bill Quay Cricket Club on either Friday 17th July or Friday 14th August. Saturdays are tricky as there's obviously cricket and bands and other stuff on but Fridays are generally free. We can have the function room at no cost as long as some beers are purchased and ill get some pizzas in from the takeaway round the corner. The room isn't too big and will take a couple of systems being set up (obviously only one playing at a time).

We can have the venue from 5pm and the club has reasonably priced quality ale from the excellent Jarrow brewery. The venue is a 5-10min walk from Pelaw metro and easily accessible by car with plenty of parking. If folk want to come from further afield there's a Travelodge at Whitemare Pool about a mile away and numerous accommodation options in Newcastle, Gateshead or South Shields if you want something fancier.

Let me know if there's enough interest and of course what you'd like to bring. As its just round the corner from me I'll start the ball rolling and bring a full system. Ideally need someone to bring another quality pair of speakers. I'll also bring the copy of 10cc 'Bloody Tourists'

So reply here if you're game and which of the 2 dates works best.... PM me if you want any more info.

All the best.

August would be ok for me, I'm nightshift on the July date.

Are you still using the Brio-r Rich? I could possibly bring an Elex-r for comparison. As for speakers I've got JPW AP3s if they would be suitable.

Hi Paul, I've moved on from the brio r and I'm now using a passive pre and NVA monoblocks with NVA cable throughout. Great synergy similar to what I had with the Rega set up but even more honest in the presentation.

Is still love to hear the elex-r though and would have my Rega speakers there. Similarly I'd love to hear my NVA amps with the JPW as I understand they're quite well suited.

Cheers Pete, the idea here isn't to take anything away from the NEBO there just seemed to be an appetite amongst some of the local regulars, some of whom have made pretty big changes to their systems, for a more small scale gathering so we're treating this as a pre match friendly with enough clear water between this and the NEBO main event.

Rich, even if PEBO can't be on the August date I'm sure we can sort something out as I'd love to hear the Elex-r with Rega speakers as well.

That's a shame Ken, enough to have me thinking August could be better to have you and Rossman attend.

Any other dates available?

There may be some but I'm either busy or away a few weekends myself in July and Aug so it might be Sept and then the risk of running too close to the NEBO comes into view. Looks like July is still the best then. I'm speaking to the club chairman next Tues so will have an absolute confirmation then.

Ok, so I've just confirmed with the club chairman we're ok to go ahead on the Friday 17th July from 5pm onwards.

Be great to see some of the local faces again and enjoy a few cold ones with yous. Feel free to invite whoever you think will 'dig it' and post here what you're bringing if you haven't already.

You can easily find the place on Google maps if you're unsure, we're about 4miles downriver from the Toon and a stones throw from the A19 and A194/A1 if you're coming by car. Pm me if you need more details.

Heres a shout! What are the hours? Remind me of the exact location please.

5pm til close Jez. Bill Quay Cricket Club in between Pelaw and Hebburn. You should find it ok on Google Maps. Coming from Northumberland you probably want to come through the Tyne Tunnel from the A19 through Hebburn and Jarrow which will avoid rush hour traffic through Newcastle and Gateshead.

Others coming from the North will want to do the same thing. Pick up the A19 south through the tunnel and avoid the city at that time of day.

For public transport, its 10mins walk from Pelaw Metro Station or take a taxi from Heworth Metro Station.

Could be 12-13 of us I think which would be a nice number. A few of my pals who aren't audiophiles might pop by also out of curiosity for the music.

I'll be taking my modified sl1210 which depending on your perspective might not qualify as a good vinyl source but I'm afraid I only have an MM (at440MLA) and a HOMC (Denon DL110) for it which probably isnt what you wanted. If you have an MC feel free to bring it.

Sorry i cant make it Rich, next time maybe. Great seeing you and Ruth the other week.

BTW i forgot to bring those cables so PM me the best address for you mate and I'll return them.

Yikes! Got home tonight after a long couple of days in Leeds with work and thought I'd sit down and enjoy some of my new grateful dead purchases on vinyl....

Holy s**t the turntable is sounding really off right now. Last time I played anything on it was last Friday when I had fellow AoS man Mad Moon round... it was sounding sweet then but the distortion is off the charts tonight....

I wouldn't subject my worst enemy to this racket. Think I'll be calling upon the collected expertise there on Friday to sort this one out.

Tracking is spot on, turntable is level, stylus clean, vinyl not too scruffy etc.

I'm having a meltdown now. Too knackered to have it to bits tonight.

Gordon?

Sounds good to me.

To tell the truth I've never ever heard it full spectrum as it's only used for lower mids in my setup - the other 3 Benchmarks making up the rest of the frequency spectrum. Ideally I'd love a single 8 channel Dac like an Exasound e28, but at more than £3000 I'll just keep dreaming. Especially as my car got well pummelled in that massive hailstorm we had a couple of weeks ago - its bodywork looks like the surface of the moon!

Big thanks to Rich Britton for organizing a great evening. The Pelaw bake off was a great event and there was some great sounds to be heard. The most disappointing thing that happened was the unfortunate troubles that befell our Scottish friends who due to their transport breaking down ended up having to return home on the back of a trailer. All present felt their pain and hopefully they will venture to NEBO 6 in November. I have no doubt that a full report will be posted when Rich gets out of his pit but some of the highlights for me was listening to Gordon's Benchmark DAC using Alan's MF A5 CDP as a transport. Jeff Beck live at Ronnie Scott's and Devin Townsend unplugged were stunning. More later though as i have to go to work. Thanks again Rich. Great evening.:)

yeah... proper good night..couple of quality tt's..sounding very different..however producing some quality sound..the dac belonging to Gordon is sublime..my old MF 3.5 held its own playing some blues and a bit Jazz..but the sound for me was Steve's Tascam reel to reel...it played beautifully...a great mix of music all round..what a cracking tool...Rich's NVA rig was also exceptional..providing most of the amplification for the night..although not a fan of tubes..the valve gear last night did produce some nice smooth music..I might change my mind about tubes...Shame about the lads north of the border having to return home after a breakdown...must have been soul destroying..Was really looking forward to hearing the Eddingdales..maybe next time....Rich rigged up a wee usb dac into his laptop..Peter Gabriel backed by the 46 piece New blood Orchestra..flac of course..excellent...Mick was just starting to set up his Radford when some pratt put the jukebox on...what a wally...there ended the night.

Nightmare... I hope all those involved got home safely... Were none of them a member of the AA or RAC? I always have full recovery and 'At Home' breakdown cover on my car. The peace of mind of doing so is priceless! :)

Hi lads,
Ali and I made it back to Scotlandshire safe and sound, though gutted that we had missed the North East clan gathering.
Thanks for the kind words, just one of those things I guess...must have been our turn for bad luck!
Apologies too for those wanting to hear the Eddingdales, we'll be coming to the next Nebo, so hopefully see you there.

But aye, fun and games getting home.

Had got off the motorway and was about an hour away from the venue when we saw steam coming from the engine. Luckily it happened just before we hit a service station (literally!) so we pulled in.
Coolant leak we tbought...split hose maybe?
Ali called RAC and and hour and a half later the guy turned up.

He had a look, we and werent going anywhere. :(
Called for a tow truck to pick us up.
*Two hours later* he arrived...and first thing he said was that he needed to pull in for a 45 minute Tachograph break!!
So hanging around service station for 3 1/2 hours...brilliant.
EVENTUALLY we got back to Ali's around midnight and cracked open a couple of beers.
Helluva day!

Sorry we missed it guys...gutted. Sounds like it was a great evening.
See y'all at the next Nebo, will bring the Eddies down with us.

So glad you got back safe and sound guys. Comparing the Young and Benchmark would have been good fun, and I was really looking forward to hearing the Eddingdales, but the main thing is you both got back OK. We can always do the dac bake off another time.

A big thanks to Rich for pulling it all together - and for the pizza!

Some great sounds and good tunes - as usual with these events I have some new music to buy now.

As promised chaps here's a write up and some pics from last night... Overall, a great little get together with a few of the North East clan and a couple of new faces too. Sadly some car trouble on the way down meant that the Scottish Mafia who were due to attend ended up being towed back to Jockland with their kit and I was absolutely gutted for them having made such an effort to come and bring their kit only to be thwarted at the last hurdle. This threw a bit of a spanner in the works as we were really looking forward to hearing the kit they were due to bring, Edingdale speakers, Firebottle phono stage and OTL amps. As such we had to improvise a bit and make do with the kit we'd brought already which saw my amps and speakers being used for much of the night.

Arriving at 5pm and not yet realising the trouble our Scots pals were having onroute we set up an inital system in the narrow end of the room with the intention of leaving the larger end of the room clear for them and their large speakers.

This system comprised my Rega RS5 speakers, NVA A40 monoblocks, Icon Audio passive pre, Technics SL1210, Croft Micro Basic Phono and NVA cables. Additional sources came in the form of Alan's Musical Fidelity CD Player and Graeme's Rega RP6. Alan also provided a mains conditioning block and some DIY main's cables which we ran everything but the amps through. From the off with the CD player this made a wonderful sound in that corner of the room, just right for the space and the pillar you may see in the pics didn't have much of an effect at all on the soundstage. We enjoyed some WT Feaster blues on CD and some ZZ Top on the Technics to get us going. All agreed this was sounding fine. Graeme was keen to see how his RP6 with an Ortofon 2M Blue fared against the modified Techie and Alan provided an excellent Carole Kidd LP on the Linn Jazz label to allow us to undertake the comparison as we listened to a side on each deck using the Croft (with upgraded valves) as the phono stage. The Technics had it for me with the Rega sounding like it was struggling a bit with some of the dynamics in the recording. We thought this was as much down to the choice of cartridge as much as anything and having heard the Rega deck in a full Rega system I'd say synergy also had a part to play here. The Techie and Croft had it, the Rega didn't in this system.

It was at this point that I got a call from Don McCorleone to say it was unlikely they were going to make it with the ongoing car trouble and we resolved to make the best of it and gradually migrated to the wider end of the room where Progmeister Steve had set up a reserve pair speakers, Mission 752 and vintage valve man Mick had set up his Vertik monoblocks (10w I think), a cheap and very cheerful Yaqin integrated with RIAA stage (think he said cost £90  ) and Promethius TVC with Steve's Tascam R2R as a source. We enjoyed a diverse mix of music Steve had recorded from his vinyl collection for the session via this source which featured everything from The Who to New Order and some hugely entertaining politically incorrect folk music  Steve will need to remind me what this was as it made me chuckle.

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0172.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0172.jpg.html)

Sadly the background noise increased a bit in the venue as Friday night punters began to arrive regarded us as if Martians had arrived in the club and seemed disappointed the bingo wasn't getting called... (Note to self, print out some 'Private Function' notices for any future events to keep the buggers away :angry-screaming: ). Anyway with the noise increasing it became apparent the valve setup was running out of steam when turning the wick up a bit so we brought the NVA amps up to this end of the room, with some more power to our elbows we were able to get on with the session. As a side note we found again the Croft as a pre into Mick's valve amps was way too loud, obviously this isn't really an issue for me as I use it as phono stage only into a passive which gives lots of attenuation. I can't imagine which power amps would suit the Croft as a pre with this much gain. Unfortunately with our Scots pals now headed back in the opposite direction it was the only phono stage on offer as Steve had forgot to bring his Phono2 with him so we never got to hear it. Having put the passive back into the loop we had a bit more vinyl going via the two turntables on offer, Genesis and the excellent My Baby (a Dutch Gospel/Blues 3 piece I've recently become obsessed with).

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0175.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0175.jpg.html)

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0176.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0176.jpg.html)

Then onto some digital jiggery pokery with Gordon's Benchmark DAC/Pre feeding the NVA amps and Alan's Musical Fidelity CD player providing the 1s and 0s. This made for a lovely sound and with the system firing on all cylinders now really dug deep into some libe Jeff Beck, found the gravel at the bottom of Joe Cocker's voice and all the air in an excellent Devin Townsend close miked acoustic recording. I cant remember what the latter album was but this made for a outstanding sound with bags of musical involvement. The amps never once lost their grip with anything we threw at them and remarks were made as to how fast and agile they were, staying on top of every note.

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0177.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0177.jpg.html)

Finally we rounded off the night with a 'cheap as chips' moment as I connected up my laptop to a very inexpensive USB DAC (40quid) and filled the room with some Peter Gabriel and the New Blood Orchestra and a bit of primal scream. Time was getting on now and just before last orders we began packing up and gave the room back to the bemused punters. Rather encouragingly a random punter came into the room and stood transfixed at the back for a while before saying he'd never heard anything which sounded like it... I think we made his night lol.

So, a massive thanks to all who were able to make it and whilst we missed our Scots brethren enormously we made do with what we had and hopefully all had an enjoyable night I hope. Here's a pic of some of the gang from earlier in the evening. There was a lot of great music played and I neglected to make a playlist as we went so please post a list of what you brought and played.

Thanks for taking the time to post this Richard . It looks like a great night was had by all . There was probably enough gear there considering the time restraints . It's amazing how quickly the time goes when you're listening to different gear and music . Looks very interesting to me anyway and I was disappointed work prevented me from going . I will certainly try to make NEBO this time round.
Shame about Ali and Gary as I'm sure they would have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There's always next time.

Hi everyone , just a few things to chip in with about last nights Pebo.Really enjoy these events and last night was no different . The Verdik amps I brought along are only rated at 10 watts and I think were "found out" a little trying to fill a room the size of the venue ,better suited to a domestic role , Rich's power amps gave a much more impressive account of themselves. The Devin Townsend track which rightly impressed the assembled great and good :) was from his "unplugged" album and is called Terminal.Very impressed with the sound quality of the Peter Gabriel track - both the track and the equipment.Pretty much echo what has already been said by people who say it better and agree with Rich who said we should have a sign saying Private function Keep Out , I mean who would want to enter a room with our privates functioning! See you all next time Mick

Guys,
great shame the Scottish contingent didn't make the mini meet. Ali, hope you get your car repaired soon and doesn't hurt your wallet too much.

From the feedback I get the impression quite a few of those who did attend were most disappointed to have missed the opportunity to hear the EDINGDALE speakers that Gazza was bring down.

Now it's a long time to wait for the next NEBO and with this in mind how about if Scott and I organise a mini meet say in August or September in HULL, would this be of interest to you Newcastle and surrounding area northern based guys to be interested? I would bring along my original demo pair of Edingdales and Jenna speakers. I would also bring along my new Norge floorstanders for their first public airing. Amps would be a Conrad Johnson LP66S-S2 to satisfy the valve heads and a Musical Fidelity A300CR Dual Mono for the SS favoured ears. I also can bring along a AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 Reference CD player. Not sure if I would have room for my Nottingham Analogue Spacedeck but I could perhaps persuade Stratmangler to join us for the day as he might have room for my vinyl front end. Perhaps even persuade NickG to bring his new phono stage.

I'd organise it at my place with a dedicated listening room and great Lancashire hospitality but Rossendale may be a little too far for some whereas Hull is midway between the two. I know Scott has a very nice venue in mind.

So guys please post your interest here and if there is enough initial interest I'll start a new thread and ask Scott to get some available dates.

Hi Colin, I could make a Saturday trip down to Hull but my dates are more limited over the coming weeks.

Aug bank holiday would be out of the question, as would the 5th September as I'm at a festival then away for 2 weeks from the 17th.

Might be an idea to start a new thread to prevent confusion also.

All the best.

Looks like you had a good session, shame it clashed.

Sorry to here about the vehicle break down Ali, I'm off to Glasgow myself tommorrow, via Newcastle Airport and a stop off in Carlisle. Might check out some of the record shops in Glasgow, time permitting.

An old school friend is opening the doors to his record shop on the 29th July, previously web based sales and singles only, so will be attending that. Its only 500yds from my house, that is just going to be too tempting to walk past.

Looking forward to full blown NEBO in November.

Hi Ken, pleased you enjoyed the festival mate. Has your pal got a website or anything for his shop I'd be interested to check it out.

Also looking forward to the NEBO, the idea for the one off was spawned because we'd both made some big changes to our systems so it was such a shame you couldn't make it. I'll be interested to hear how the Yamahas have moved on since your mods and whether you went for the Nakamichi amps. Gordon was telling me about his.

Sounds like a superb night was had by all I got landed going to my sisters daughters wedding (shite music)so couldn't make it sorry rich if you organise this again sometime I will deffo make it ps are you taking the nva mono blocks to nebo would love to here them with a vinyl front end ps what make is your passive pre 😜

This was just a one off mate, a pre match friendly for the NEBO. We were supposed to have some Edingdales there but the Scottish lads couldn't get there. Hope you'll be bringing yours to the NEBO. Ill take my amps along too. The passive I'm using is an Icon Audio. I'll bring that too.

Hi Rich

Back from Glasgow, +couple of LP's and CD's.

Brian has been running a web based business for singles for about 7 years at www.45rpmdiscs.co.uk
He needed the shop for his stock but gets a lot of 12" albums in bulk puchases and house clearances etc. I think he is using the shop to move these so they may not be on his site.:)
