Hi
I need a budget (below £200) cd player to go with a denon pma700ae amp in a work space. Anyone have any ideas?
I've looked at denon dcd500ae and Nad c525BEE but without access to a soundroom i can only go on advice from others.

it is for classical and contemporary indie/rock.
With a need for sound clarity and strong bass.

Any ideas and advice greatly received, thanks

Hi Flappy,

Welcome to the forum :)

In my experience, Rotel CDPs are always a good bet in the budget arena. I'm sure there must be one available around the £200 mark. Also Onkyo, Sony, Yamaha and Cambridge Audio all have strong products at that price point. Richer Sounds should be your first port of call.

Have you also considered going second-hand? There are some fabulous bargains on older (but very good) players around at the moment on Ebay, and even places like Cash Converters, in surprisingly good condition!

If you would like to know which ones to look out for let me know.

Marco.

Thanks for that.
I hadn't considered second hand and wouldn't know where to start so any advice on what models etc to look for and why would be really greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Flappy,

I'll compile a more extensive list from my notes and post it tomorrow. Off the top of my head at the moment an Arcam Alpha 5 and a Marantz CD63, or the SE version, come to mind straight away :)

Good selection there, Rob :)

Flappy,

One thing to bear in mind is unless it's cheap as chips (say £50 or less) and virtually a throw-away item - when going for older players try to choose one which you can still obtain transport mechanisms for. Unfortunately many of the ones used in older players are no longer available so if they go bye-bye you'll be left with little more than an ornament.

The only way to know this is through experience or by asking someone like Mark Bartlett from Audiocom (on the forum) to advise as he's worked with most of them. Again, it all depends on how much you've paid for the CDP in question.

What a friendly + helpful forum :)
I shall have a look and ponder some of these ideas, thanks.

Looking at the above list (as of today) I'd be interested in the Rega Planet and the Naim CD3. The latter can be upgraded by Les of Avondale Audio at a later stage if you find the funds.

Hello Flappy

With a £300 budget you might consider a Marantz CD63 SE CD player as a transport partnered with a Beresford TC-7510 MK6/3 DAC, check Ebay. Expect to pay £50 for a S/H CD63 with remote, add another £15 for carriage. The lasers are available for the CD63, VAM1202 to build some future proofing in to your purchase. With this combo you will have enough budget to invest in a decent digital interconnect, again Ebay is an ideal place to look.

Best of luck
Mark

Have a look at my site too - all sorts of stuff there and it changes quite often. Cd players start at about the 20 quid mark.
