Many thanks for your comments Alan & Barry - I lusted after a Studer A820 from the age of 16 sitting outside of an office waiting to be interviewed for a BBC engineering position - I saw it in a Studio Sound magazing on the coffee table in the waiting room. Took me another 30 years to actually own one.........

This is a video / audio machine fully working and restored.

And yes - it does have on board Dolby SR and A type noise reduction as well as being a full bandwidth (5.5MHz) analogue composite video recorder.

For more information on the Stille recording machine read: http://theartofsound.net/images/smilies/openreel.gif et seq.

It used a steel tape 3mm wide running at 1.5m/s (= 59 i.p.s). Usually the spools had safety cage around them: can you imagine the damage that could be done if the tape snapped (say at one of the edits) resulting in a solid steel ribbon thrashing about wildly? Would put 337alant's Teac 'problem' to shame and would probably lacerate or even blind anyone standing nearby!

Hi Alan;

Yes I did - lucky to have one in this condition with all the later software modifications - the machine is entirely software driven in terms of operation. It has a built in frame-store TBC for picture stabilisation unlike many machines of it's era that had outboard units.

I found it in a bin room in a facilities company under a pile of rotting food. They gave it to me for nothing - I remember having to go and rent a sack barrow from one of the stallholders in Berwick Street Market to move it to my car.

Back in the day it cost around £70 000.

I keep an eye on Ebay and the revox machines go for a fortune but unknown good R2Rs tend to go by with little attention
I have collected a few very good R2Rs at a decent price which iMO are every bit as good as any Revox machine
Here are 4 I have bough this year

Thanks Grant the Tascam BR20 was the last R2R ever made, get one and you will get good service out of it even now, but buy a revox and its a ticking time bo*b when it will fail catastrophically and take out the very difficult to obtain ICs with it.

Really? I've been using Revox machines for decades, and still do (B77 these days) and found them very reliable. So have colleagues. The Japanese machines are lovely, but rarely well supported for spares and back-up. I would have said that a Revox is the most supported reel-to-reel by a large margin. That's why they sell for more........

Dont get me wrong I love the Revox machines as well and own 2 x PR99s and an A77, I also agree for me they have been very reliable and you can still buy some spares for them.
Its just a reality that capacitors only have a useful life in thousands of hours at temperature, the Fraco cap was a very high quality cap 30-40 years ago and was used in virtually all pro/semi pro gear like this, its remarkable that they have lasted this long really but the problem with this brand is they do have a reputation for drying out and failing short and its the fail short that is very unusual for a cap but very bad for the damage it can do when it happens.
Check out the Tapeheads forum there are countless threads about this problem and from people who service them for a living.
Recapping a full machine isnt a problem for me as its my hobby anyway but I would guess it wouldn't be cheap to get a service company to do it

Is that Telefunken yours?

A year or so ago, I came very close to acquiring a Studer C37 two-track machine with recording meters for £800 In the end I declined, as I was uncertain as to the situation with spares, and more importantly I didn't think I would use it to its full capability. Lovely piece of engineering nonetheless! :)

If you like the cosmetics of the Revox E36, you ought to try and track down a G36 (aka Revox 736). This was the last of the Revox designs to use valves, had a similar 'retro' styling and was a machine favoured by many musicians for their own use. The G36 can take 10.5" diameter spools.

(Thirty five years ago I turned down the opportunity to buy a G36 for £25. I declined.)

It was superseded by the A77/B77 designs.

I had a couple of Uher 4400 machines: one was a 4400, the second a 4400 IC. Having a couple of 2-track machines (a Ferrograph 632 and a Nagra IV-S), I found having 4-track machines as being an uncessary format. Had I aquired a 2-track version (the 4200) I could well have kept it; despite the 4000 Series Uhers being limited to 5" diameter spools.

Your machine looks to be in excellent condition. :)

I used the Uher in my early days in broadcasting...complete pain in the rear. We ended up using either Marantz machines or Walkman pros. Fragile but light. Try moving about with a Uher banging against you. It also made you too 'visible.' Didn't like them at all.

I would love a G36. I know that Tim de Paravicini of EAR used to do modifications on G36s, I bet those were special.

Some more photos showing the Nagra IV-S fitted with either 5" spools or 7" diameter spools (the latter being the largest size the machine can take and about the only practical limitation of the recorder).

I would love an IV-S... Such a well made little thing.

Quick question, can it record at 15ips on 7" reels or do you need the OGB adapter for that?

Quick question, can it record at 15ips on 7" reels or do you need the OGB adapter for that?

Yes - you can record at 15ips using 7" spools on the Nagra IV-S, but you will get through the tape quickly. Assuming a 7" spool holds 1200' of tape, at 15 ips that's 960 seconds worth of recording, or 16 minutes. The Nagra IV-S was designed as a portable machine for interviews, recording bird song or film dialogue - all of which do not need a long recording time capacity.

If you want to use 10.5" spools you will need to use the QGB adapter but the combination is so clumbersome, you may as well go for a decent Revox or Studer machine (say the Revox PR99 or a Studer A62 or B62) capable of taking 10.5" diameter spools.

A quick question if I may...

Would I have any problems in volume or clipping with connecting unbalanced (output from pre or DAC) to a balanced input of a tape deck (using custom made IC or adapter) and then again from a balanced output (from deck) to an unbalanced input of pre?

Been looking in to some lovely reel to reels that all have balanced I/O but I've got conflicting advice on this. Some say I'd need a DI Box? And depending if the tape deck has VU levels it might therefore have to go through a PPM/Monitor too!

Sounds quite convoluted if you ask me. Any thoughts, chaps?

Hi Jo'

I have my PR99s running into THESE (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XLR-TO-PHONO-ADAPTORS-FOR-REVOX-STUDER-PR99-/321044750042?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4abfc21eda) into my Art Audio VPL with no problem in either direction. If your tape input has enough head room there should be no trouble, but a simple attenuator should do the trick.

Excellent to find such enthusiasm for these lovely devices. I now live in Lisbon much of the year, so am planning to find my ultra-rare Ferrograph Logic Seven a good new home. It was serviced by Serviesound, Geoff Kramer, and is a great example of the last British Ferrograph.
Anyway, if someone with an existing Collection of machines would provide a safe and carefulhome I would let them have this at a very reasonable cost....but not for resale. The machine would need to be collected from East Sussex, when I am in the UK.....late this month or August.
What's important is that the machine is cherished and preserved. It's history. Pm me, but only if you have enough interest and knowledge to provide a new home. Thanks

Audio Al is having the Ferrograph. I think he will find it a remarkably good sounding machine...to my ears it beats the pants off any Revox for sheer sound quality, but it doesn't feel as 'commercial', more industrial really. These machines were used mainly by te government, in submarines and also, I understand, in spying roles . No Japanese machine I know of, and have used, sounds as good either.
But usual British story, under-investment and company changes knocked a great company on the head. They ended up as NEAL making cassette machines for police interrogations. Good machines, the NEAL, got one somewhere.j

That does look to be a very nice machine Jo - we have 2 of them at my workplace and I can vouch for how reliable they are.

PPM units (stereo ones) do tend to be very expensive however look at TSL units.

You may also want to consider software versions - there is some free software available written by an ex BBC engineer which emulates BBC PPM's absolutely faithfully in every way including looks and response times. The software allows you to calibrate to your computer soundcard or interface so accuracy in level monitoring is not an issue.

Good to hear it arrived in nice condition

For cleaning most things I use 99.9% IPA
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-X-1-Litre-IPA-ISOPROPYL-ALCOHOL-ISOPROPANOL-LIQUID-99-9-Watertight-Screw-Cap-/281118434574?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4173f6e50e
For switches and pots I use Craig Deoxit gold, its not cheep but its vgood IMO
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Caig-DeoxIT-Gold-Contact-Conditioner-and-Protector-Spray-5-oz-/181715894977?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a4f1c82c1
Or cheaper Maplin Servisol Super 10
http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/servisol-super-10-switch-contact-cleaner-200ml-jp17t.
Use Naptha lighter fuel on the roller followed by a cotton bud soaked in clean water
Tape calibration you need an MRL alignment tape, playback test tones and speed tape, A signal generator for input and record test tones with adjustable gain, A meter for measuring true RMS AC or DBs, an Oscilloscope for azimuth and some speed measurement, and a wow and flutter meter.
Demag get a good quality demagnetiser, this is what I use
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HAN-D-MAG-international-studio-tape-head-demagnetizer-115-or-220-volt-BRAND-NEW-/221248600430?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338371b96e
You dont need to demag all the time and you can do permanent damage if your not careful
Start by cleaning all the tape heads and guider and rollers in the tape path
Add an extension lead to the handimag
Majke sure before you switch it on there are no tapes anywhere in the room 0r anything that could be affected by the demag, I take mine in the kitchen and put it on the island.
Put the demag about 3 ft away from the machine and switch on.
Very slowly move the handimag towards the left most item in the tape path and bring it as close as possible without touching it, you should feel it vibrate when it gets close
Very slowly move the mag up and down and left and right across the item then whilst still slowly oscillating the mag slowly move it away back to the 3ft away position
Repeat for each head and guide working your way across the tape path
#when finished move it away to over 3 ft and switch off
Never switch off when it is near the tape heads it could leave them permanently magnetized

Pinch roller

It is very easy to monitor and line up 2 channel stereo with such a unit - the right hand meter reads sum and difference which can actually be used for phase alignment in the absence of a scope of phase scope.

2T pulse and bar from a test signal generator on the left scope.

I have some FRAKO and ROE caps that need replacing too. Do you know where to source the large smoothing caps on these machines? The ones at the top of the machine? They are a stud bolt fitting to the chassis. They are not leaking but best be safe.

The other ones on mine are on the spool controller board (I think).

Can anyone recommend someone to give it a service/calibration?

Thanks, well I doubt I would tackle it myself. I don't know my way around this machine so i'd rather give it to someone who does.

Hi Jo;

I am going to maybe go against the advice of many in this field but I would honestly say that if your machine is working then leave it well alone.

Where I work we have machines in excess of 40 years old (videotape machines mostly - quadruplex) that have never had any major or minor components changed.

We monitor conditions obviously but we will only start changing components if there is a clear need for it.

Also bear in mind (as I am sure you do) that Studer electronics like many systems in this kind of field are extremely finely balanced - only replace with exact component values if you have to.

We can service and calibrate the machine for you if you wish but would only start changing out components on specific request or if we were to actually encounter a fault. We can also provide a backup copy on tape of an album or collection of music that you own on a new reel of tape that you provide. The line up tones we record at the head of such a recording would serve in future as reference flux level tones as well as an azimuth reference.

These machines are a LONG way from the sort of awful rubbish that was sold domestically during this period which is why they still work so well today. The components Studer used were of extremely high standard.

OK got is home and plugged it in ?, problem the in out XLRs are the opposite way round of all my other R2Rs ? so had to use adapters and a phono lead
Stuck on a tape made on one of my Tascam BR20s and it sounded spot :)
Recorded a couple of tracks and note there is no way to attenuate the input level? and it seems a bit high direct from my DAC
Anyway it still sounded good so here is a video of the A810 playing Gregory porter, no love dying.

BTW... if anyone is looking at Studers (and parts for them) on ebay at the moment, there is a seller on there that is certainly not very nice to deal with. He has quite a collection of machines at the moment that are pretty worn out.

Name and shame!

Got some good advice over on tapeheads.net and with ref to the circuit Diags the XLR input outputs go directly to an identical interference filter first and have the same pin out plug in lead so you can just swap them over :)
So I did that and have managed to spin the stickers round so they indicate the correct orientation of Input output, they are upside down now but not bothered by that
Now everything is interchangeable with the other R2Rs and it lets me use my Clotz mc5000 xlr interconnects which I prefer *bigthumbup*.
Had a look at the manual last night and the set up doesn't look that difficult now I have familiarized myself with the controls.
Have to say the Studer sounds superb, Im very happy with this machine :eyebrows:

Its looking and sounding really good now
I recaped most of the small daughter boards yesterday with Nichicon muse KZ only caps I didnt have were the 1000uf 6v and some bi polar to replace the 47uf ROE caps, ill get some nichicon muse bipolar on order and swap them out
TBH most of the caps changed measured in spec only a couple of the blue phillips looked a bit bulged and measured out
There are a couple of ROE caps that look cracked IMO
After the cap changes it sounded worse yesterday but thats normal I find and it can take a few days or a week for the new caps and soldered joints to re-form, its sounding much better today.
This is a superb R2R and is a professional quality design quality like the Otari's IMO

Jo for service I use Henry Dulat in Fetcham in Surrey, PM me if you want contact details. On the eBay seller if you mean a guy calked Barry, he is a thiveing scumbag and should be avoided at all costs.

Been updating my Studer A810, managed to get hold of a pair of VU meterpanels and a 4 speed controller which I have replaced th digital LED display and fader system.
Not an easy job as there is a fair bit of wiring and an extra circuit board for the old LED and fader interface and it isnt obviouse where to plug in the new VU panels even with the manual but I think I have it sussed now and it still sounds fab and looks better with VUs IMO

Nice job Alan, how does it compare to the Tascam?

337alant
06-09-2015, 05:02
HI Ali,
The Studer is the best sounding R2R I own, and is my pride and joy:), that said the Tascam BR20 & Otari MX55 are still an excellent machine's and sound very good in their own right but the studer has the edge on overall sound quality, realism and slam it just doeas everything a little bit better, has a superb tape transport but has better proffessional build quality.
I am still working on this machine when I have time, I have recapped all the electrolytics on the daughter boards, replacing all the Frako, Roe rodestine bakerlite and phillips caps with Nichicon muse and bipolar caps as applicable
There is still the power supplies, Backplane, Stabilizer, display, capstan and reel motor boards to look at when I get time but it still sounds superb to me
I also want to upgrade the 3 eprom chips from the 25/86 to the 25/91 version and change the memory back up battery at the same time. I have the parts but Im trying to get my head round the best method of doing that without loosing all of the calibation data which is stored on those chips. Its not the end of the world if you do loose it all as the basic electronic settings are in the manual you can write down all the actual calibration settings before you start it would just take a little time to reprogramme it all.
These are pretty complicated machines (to me )with many dip switches and electronic calibration but I am enjoying the challenge of learning how to do it propperly.
I may be leaning on Stewart's knowledge (lodge sound) in the future for advice on the best way to fully calibrate this machine for 2 tape types :eyebrows:.
