I have heard the 4400 version of this amp and they were bloody fantastic. Anyone in the market for a couple of mono's would do well to have a look at Emporium hifi as they have a pair for sale. I have no link to this supplier, just wanted to point them out...

Ebay link...

Since emporium haven't used a photo, there is one here...

I remember always lusting after these...! I now have Audiolab monoblocks and I'm not giving them up so I guess the time has passed by.

Those are bloody awesome things. Early 90s vintage, I think. I used to sell them (or ones very like it) when I worked in Bill Hutchinson in Glasgow. They're 'no compromise' high-end Denon at its best! :smoking:

And probably better than about 90% of solid-state amps made today.

Marco.

Are they class A? Those slots in the top of the casework must be there for a reason ! If they are, I bet they run hot with that kind of output.

I once bought a pair of Lowther Acoustas from a local bloke who was moving down south and wasn't going to have the room in his new place - he had a pair of Denon Monoblocks that were very similar (although I don't recall the blue stripe) - what was supposed to be a quick 'collect and pay' turned into a 3 hour discussion as he showed me his plans for the isobarik speaker he was going to build (KEF bass units) for them to drive.

He also showed me a room full (literally) of turntables and said I could take as many as I liked for nothing! ( I had a quick look and it was mainly Lenco GL75s and inferior Garrards so I said no - plus I already had to get the Acoustas past my then girlfriend...)

Sorry to wander a bit - I would love these amps but I must say I really dislike buying on Ebay

Hi Macca. I do not think that is a blue stripe, just a reflection. Another pic below. Mike, I am certain they are not true class A, I think they were powerful though about 250W RMS p/c.

Errr ... am I allowed to differ, a bit? :)

Years back, I had a pair of the Denon 6600A amps. Yep, dead good into a very easy load, lovely 'pelucid' sound, but I then demmed them with some big KEFs (107/2, I think) and they totally lost it trying to drive the bass end - weak & flabby. A bit like me really!

So ... be careful what you partner them with, is my advice. ;)

As above.

Back in the day when Kessler raved over the 4400 with Croft Micro, we kept a set on demonstration and they were pretty gutless and uninvolving. We had them for around 18months before selling them on. They looked impressive but didn't deliver sonically.

IMO of course.

I still have a pair of Denon POA 4400 monoblocks.they aren't bad amps by any means(I used them as bass amps in my active system). They simply lack distinction.

The Kenwood basic M2,which was taken-out of the system when the 4400s arrived, was put back into my system and satisfaction was restored.

The Kenwood basic M2,
Damn good power amp. Never sure why I let it go. I kept the Basic M2 preamp though, just for the phono section. I still can't get myself to put it on ebay, even though I haven't fired it up for ages.

Since I made that post about the POA 4400s,I've used the Kenwood L-1000M in the same place in my system chain(Bass amp in my diy active set-up).

The Kenwood L-1000M(in my system)was everything the POA 4400s weren't.Involving, capable of great low-level resolution and much more lifelike.

I ended-up two pairs of Kewnood L-1000Ms.One for the Treble section,one for the bass.this made for a very,very satisfying sound qulaity.I relaced the treble section L-1000M(above 800Hz) with a pair of Kenwood L-06M monoblocks.In Sigma Drive configuration,the L-06Ms blew-away the L-1000Ms.

Another pair of L-06Ms await the purchase of a pair of step-down transformers.I expect the 2 pairs L-06Ms to sound sublime.
