Bad Day At Black Rock:
Spencer Tracy knocking the shit out of Ernest Borgnine - with one hand.

Love it.
Great film and performance from Tracy, and won an Academy Award. Before shooting began, Tracy tried to back out of the picture because of his growing alcoholism and he refused to commit to doing the picture. In order to close the deal, an MGM executive contacted Tracy shortly before filming was to begin and said, "Don't worry, Mr. Tracy, a copy of the script has been sent to Alan Ladd and he has agreed to do the picture." The next day, Tracy committed to the film. Ladd, however, apparently never even saw the script.

That was a cracking film. Tracy on top form. Some other great actors in it too.
(nothing to do with it, but who remembers the American actor William Bendix. I thought he was great)
Yeah, I remember him. Was always a tough New Yorker. think he was in 12 angry men.
Must have been 1 of his last films but I love it's a mad mad mad mad world .Tracy played the detective.great cast.

It wouldn't have been the same with Alan Ladd. Spencer Tracy's physical presence added something to the film that would have been missing with Ladd.
That was a cracking film. Tracy on top form. Some other great actors in it too.

He was also in Lifeboat; a film I recently reviewed and one of my favourite wartime films Guadalcanal Diary
It wouldn't have been the same with Alan Ladd. Spencer Tracy's physical presence added something to the film that would have been missing with Ladd.
Your rigt, Ladd was 5 foot nothing and slim. Tracy had presence and toughness that was needed for the role to work.

I like the final scene of Once Upon a Time In America where De Niro has a go on the opium pipe and then settles down with a big grin on his face, possibly about to dream all of the events that happen in the bits of the film that are set in 1968.
The Omaha beach scene in Saving Private Ryan- very moving.;)
Rossano Brazzi howling up the Stelvio Pass in a bright orange Miura at the beginning of The Italian Job, accompanied by Matt Monro singing On Days Like This. Pure 60's hedonism.
Pity about what happened at the top though.....

Rossano Brazzi howling up the Stelvio Pass in a bright orange Miura at the beginning of The Italian Job, accompanied by Matt Monro singing On Days Like This. Pure 60's hedonism.
Pity about what happened at the top though.....

Going through an existentualist crisis (or sumfin') in my teens, religious parents; rebelling, searching for meaning etc...
Big fan of William Peter Blatty since my early teens, that essential moment when you read something as a youngster about somebody else that resonates with you.

Ben Hur:
The Chariot Race.
Probably my favourite Chuck Heston film. Still cringe every time I watch it. Can't believe someone wasn't seriously injured during it's filming.

The race took over 5 weeks to film; alas in one scene you can see tyre tracks from the camera vehicle. It was fabulous though, and shot outside rome.
A stuntman was actually killed during the chariot race. The family insisted the footage be used as a tribute.

Agreed. Not seen the film but a friend played this for me, after I had set his home cinema system up. The dinner he cooked was pretty good too.

Weird! A friend asked me at lunch which Bond film had that as the title music to which I responded - none of them. So he was thinking of OHMSS. Must say I am not mad keen on that one I think Lazenby is a bit too wooden, painfully so in a couple of scenes.

Agreed - he was never the best Bond. That accolade of course goes to Sean Connery! :sofa:
It' a bold man who would challenge Connery's ownership of the role. He was the best by miles. But my favourite Bond flic is the Moore-fronted 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. That was the last one he did before he was really starting to look too old to be credible.

Yes indeed.
I read a bit about OHMSS this afternoon and apparently George was treated very badly by the director and producer of OHMSS, he hated this and it was George that burnt his bridges re doing another, though he did ask in the 70s if he could but the answer was no.
Diana Rigg was not sympathetic stating that he should have been grateful for the opportunity and accept his apprentice role as it was being meted out. He had no acting experience and was given the role because he looked good and apparently could fight well.
Anyway my fave Bond film and my fave Bond.
