The one with the green platter is a very rare Marconi 3031 conversion

Reminds me of the Shindo 301. I wish one day I can own a 301. It's a dream table for me, and certainly is the cream of the crop. ; - )

The 401 is a better turntable but price and desirability are driven by the far east market where 4 is considered an unlucky number

Wow! Note to self: do not take Credit Card into that shop.

Tables alone can sell anywhere from $400 to $1,000 dollars. To add in a quality plinth, tonearm, and other modifications can automatically add up to $10k to the price. It's definitely a luxury. ;-)

Agreed - especially considering the prices they are charging:

£4,650 - £7,450 for the EMT 930 TT (albeit complete with the superb anti-vibration cradle),

£2,110 for a Thorens TD 124/II with SME 3009 in the Thorens plinth,

£940 for the Ortofon RMA/G 212i arm,

£1,000 for the Ortofon RMA/G 309i arm,

and

£500 for the Decca Mk. III head.

Good job I didn't stumble across this place when I visited Tokyo a couple of years ago - I would be pennyless!

My view is that the better TT between a 401 & 301 is the one in better condition. This overrides any design differences due to their age IMO.

A difficult choice for you if they were both in perfect condition and working order then.

I've got both, there's not much in it. 301 has more drive and boogey (maybe because its grey /grease?) the 401 is more refined / modern sounding.

I agree with the other comment, buy either on condition rather than chasing numbers.

301 is easier to make a creative plinth, but with a little imagination I prefer the 401

My point is that in similar condition the cost of a 401 will be less than that of a 301 (unless you are fortunate to have a lucky find) and, having owned a few examples of both the 401 offers slightly better SQ. As far as aesthetics go I prefer the vintage hammer or wrinkle paint finishes of old to the sleeker more polished look of the 401.

Prefer the SQ of the 301 but prefer the asethetics of the 401.

In terms of aesthetics my favourite is a cream 301 with non-strobe platter. The strobe just looks wrong to me on the 301 but fine on the more techno 401. We all have personal views which don't have to agree!

+1. It looks well tacky, but Audio Grail, she has the answer, and it comes with a Pearl...... :eyebrows:

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

For me the nicest looking 301 is the grey hammer finish models, fitted with the BBC customised 'wrist rest' (over the fine speed control), to allow precise cuing.

I do agree. I will own one of those one day - when I have space! :)

I'd like to find one of these. The Marconi plinth looks compliments the 301 perfectly

I'm listening to my 301 now, she's playing some YES through my Tannoy speakers. The 301 looks good but the minimalist straight edges of the 401 are also cool.
