Will the Roksan Darius be a good match for Quad 405?

Anoter speaker I have in mind are the Tannoy Eatons.

Roksan Darius?

I had a shop demo of a pair many years ago back in the days when I bought new equipment. :mental:

It was the "Cornflake Shop" in London, I think.

The music started playing - I gave the shop owner an incredulous look (I didn't say a word) - he said "Ah - you're wondering where the bass has gone ....".

Says it all really. Nice midrange and quite good if a bit splashy treble, but it is in serious need of a woofer being fitted.

A matter of taste, I am sure - but personally I'd look elsewhere. What sort of price range and what musical preferences are involved here?

How about some Quad 57 stats? Now that's a nice speaker! :)

Quad ESL 57, oh I wish. If only I had the room for them.

You see, I use my system in a bedroom, so big wide speakers is going to be a NO NO NO.

In mind I was thinking about Tannoy speakers, tannoy have always been a favourite speaker to me, apart from TDLs.

I'm saving up for a pair of Eatons, or maybe the IIILZ. I've always liked the nice midrange and little brightness of a Tannoy speaker. Should go very well with my Quad 405, as they are warm sounding amps.

Yup, I agree that the 405 is a warmish amp. Do you have the mk1 or mk2?

Out of interest, have you heard the Darius? I wouldn't want to put you off it if it matches your taste!

TDL? ... I have a friend who has a pair of small TDL 0.5 speakers for sale in nice condition. If you are interested, I could put him in contact.

But yes, the Quad 57 is a big speaker - it looks even bigger in-room than the measurements might suggest, too!

I already have a nice pair of TDL Studio 0.75M speakers. They sound great with my Quad 405 amp, but the TDLs sound a little to warm and I'm craving for a nice bright sounding speaker. But nothing harsh if you know what I mean.

I want a speaker that has very nice midrange, speed, brightness and back wall friendly.
I have a feeling the Tannoy might be my best bet?

Oh yes, My Quad 405 is an MK1. Great little beast.

An alternative strategy might be to get your 405 converted to mk2 status - that has a more upfront and lively sound.

I could do that in the future, but i'm happy with the way my 405s are now. Plus they were modified by the 405man when we bought them. My 44 preamp has had a full upgrade just recent by the same man, the phono stage is very good in this pre.

I'm being picky now,

Has anyone heard the new Bose 901 speakers? I Always liked their
weird shape.

Bose - just say no!!
Seriously, they are terrible speakers consisting of 9 poxy trannie radio drivers in a cabinet requiring hoards of compensation in the shape of an equaliser installed between pre and power amp.

They're up there with Rank Domus - anyone remember them?

What's wrong with them? Is it their sound? Would they sound better than a Tannoy Eaton?

They sound like disco speakers, which is where most of them end up.

Sounds like Triangle Titus would fit the bill. The last version was okay, but IMHO it was the version before which had the nicest sound and the best tweeter. Easy to drive, valve friendly and not to fussy about rear wall positioning....needs a light weight open frame stand (not heavy weight stands).

Hi Shane

Yes thats them. I couldn't remember the model number, but 202 thats it. I must say that in the past I haven't liked the treble of Triangle speakers, it was always a wee bit to bright. However with the 202 Triangle created a brilliant mix of virtues. Fast bass (bass doesn't go particularly deep, it is a small speaker after all), well fleshed out open and detailed mid with similar treble but while open and detailed not edgy or bright with fantastic imaging capability too. The speaker just sits on the neutral top of the fence neither to warm or to bright, perfect. This particular model and the 202 range got fantastic reviews in every mag that had them in for testing and I fell in love with that range too. The next version just got the treble slightly wrong for me.....brightness had started to come back. 202 series are magic IMHO.

The Comette model just above the Titus was the only blip in the range. All the floor standers are excellent, but probably to big for your room, though the Altea might be okay.

I have to say these speakers look nice. I must do some more research on them.

How much do these speakers sell for?

New they sold for £375 and the Triangle matching boomerang stands about £350 I think. S/H about half those prices I would think...these are recent models so there may not be so many around, but resist the temptation to buy an earlier model of Titus or later as they are not as good. The horn loaded tweeter in 202 is very tasty IMHO.

No, that speaker is the larger stand mount that Triangle made at the same time (it too is part of the 202 range), however IMHO and many others the slightly smaller Titus is the better speaker. This Comette 202 is better than all the other Comettes that preceded it though.

Triangle only make two stand mounts in their entry range for as long as I can remember The Titus and The Comette. In the case of the units you have provided links to these are the models with the 202 tweeter. They do however in recent years offer more up market stand mounts, something they did not do in the past.

The Titus has been around for many many years there was a TZ version a TX version. Those numbers refer to the type of tweeter used as Triangle have been using paper cone bass/mid drivers since the beginning of the company history (obviously with some improvements along the way). The bigger stand mount however needs a bigger room and needs a wee bit more space to breathe, but general opinion is that the Titus is better. You do, however need to try and hear some at some point to see if you agree.

Its possible that UKD (the UK distributors for Triangle) might have an ex-demo 202 Titus kicking around. Their web site lists what they have ex-demo.

Regards D S D L

PS Just had a look, and the answer is no. They have a Titus EX but IMHO this is not as good as the Titus 202. Link http://www.ukd.co.uk/bargain_corner.asp.

OK,

I will keep the Titus 202 in mind. I have also seen people saying Rogers speakers go very well with Quad 405 amps, don't know what model though?

Will Anyone like to share any good and bad stories of Rogers?

About 2 years ago I had a nice pair of Linn Keilidh speakers. They were one of the most amazing and extraordinary sounding speakers I have ever had. They were bright sounding speakers with a nice lively midrange, sounded very nice with a valve amp and valve CD player that Tim use to have. The Keilidhs also sounded nice with a Roksan kandy MK3 amp, but not as good when it was with valve amplification.

These Keilidhs I had was an early model (1993 I think)

I don't know why these Keilidhs sounded so nice? Maybe they were tweaked?

Has anyone on here ever heard the B&W Silver Signature speakers? They are very high top bookshelf speakers from the 90s, with two separate cross-overs.
