Can I safely use my Mission 780SE speakers with a Roksan Kandy K2 integrated amp? The amp's output is rated well above that of the speakers - is it just a matter of being careful with the volume knob or should I not pair them up at all?

The speakers are:-

Nominal impedance: 6 ohms. Crossover frequency: 3.5kHz. Sensitivity: 89dB for 2.83V at 1 metre. Recommended amplifier power rating: 25-75 watts per channel.

Unless you really hammer them, they should be fine. It's easier to damage a pair of speakers with an amplifier that's too low in power rating, due to the distortion it creates when pushed too hard.

I think it's always preferable to have an amp that has more power handling capabilities than the speakers! I wouldn't worry too much.Just don't go mental

It's what the volume control is for.

I had my Mission 780SE speakers on the end of a 220 watt MOSFET power amp and gave them some serious welly. They never had a problem.

Yep as others have said it's clipping that kills speakers, not excessive wattage. Don't forget that speaker ratings are for continuous wattage, so 100W+ peaks aren't going to damage the 780SEs.

Whether you think the noises coming out of the speakers approximate to music, is another matter though! The K2 was appalling for sonics as I recall.

As others have said, an overpowered amplifier is less likely to damage your loudspeakers than an underpowered one. (This is especially the case with underpowered transistor amplifiers, which if abused can effectively feed DC current through your speakers.)

However, I would look at it another way. In normal listening, power output to the speakers rarely exceeds one watt, and with a sensitivity of 89dB, 75 watts in a normal sized room would be VERY loud!

Nigel.

I like my K2. Not as mellow as my primare i21 but a fine amp in many other ways.

Since when does an amp have a power handling capability? :)

When you try driving a short circuit?

When you try driving a short circuit?

And why would you want to do that? :)

It isn't a case of wanting to do it, more of a case of fault conditions creating it.
