Keswick Audio Volante Speakers

Just took a punt one a set of these blind / as-seen... I can live with the scratched cabs but now I've got them home and am a bit disgruntled to see that one of the dust caps is missing on a woofer!

Will the driver be ok without it? Apart from that, they look ok.

If not, no bother and I break them for spares. It's shame they've been a neglected a bit as they look like they would of been a very smart of speakers in their day...

I will plug them in soon to test for working order, but I see on the back they have 4 binding posts. Usually I'd assume they're bi-wireable and the jumper links are missing, but they're labelled "L.F" and "H.F" - can any fellow owners out there vouch for their connectivity?

Hi Dawson,
LF refers to the bass/midrange unit whilst HF refers to the tweeter.

LF = low frequency, HF = high frequency
Just wire the two red terminals together and the two black terminals together for uniwire (have I just invented the term for non-biwire?)

As far as the dust cover goes I'd get one and just glue it in place, particularly if you are going to use the speakers without covers.

Yep, or remove the other and have two phase plugs turned out of wood.

If a bass/midrange driver has been designed to work with a dust cap, then replacing it with a phase plug is not a good idea as it will change the fundamental behaviour of the driver and affect its response. There may well also be power handling issues.

These (http://www.speakerrepairshop.com/index.php?action=home&lang=EN) people sell all sorts of dust caps from about 3Euros each - find the right size, buy one, stick it on with some PVA and enjoy. Keswick Audio speakers were designed by the current Technical Director of Monitor Audio and are reputedly rather good.
