Roxy Music - Avalon (http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Avalon/176487) on Grooveshark

In my opinion a classic album from the 1980's

Avalon
Roxy Music album
Avalon, released in 1982, is Roxy Music's eighth studio album. Recorded in 1981–82 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, it is generally regarded as the culmination of the smoother, more adult-oriented sound of the band's later work.

The song tracks are as follows

1 More Than This 4:16
2 The Space Between 4:31
3 Avalon 4:17
4 India 1:45
5 While My Heart Is Still Beating 3:27
6 The Main Thing 3:54
7 Take a Chance With Me 4:43
8 To Turn You On 4:14
9 True to Life 4:26
10 Tara 1:32

Lead singer is Brian Ferry who also has a successful solo career

I like the laid back smooth production of this album .

Hope you enjoy this Album :)

I'm keen me, listening to this right now even though it is only a couple of hours since I last listened to it. I will report back shortly ;)

There aren't superlatives enough to describe Avalon, masterful songs delivered in a manner only Brian Ferry and Roxy Music can muster. The production is exquisite, full of subtle textures which dance around the soundstage like delicate butterflies buffeted by the breeze, Ferry's voice quavering with rapt wonder at the beauty of it all. As you can probably tell, I quite like this album... ;) 10/10

As a recent new member here I was intrigued to see an "Album Club". It looks like a great way to reacquaint yourself with music you've forgotten about or discover music that is brand new to you. I'm going to try and keep up with the weekly albums starting with this one.

This was a very enjoyable listen. I've heard nearly all the songs over the years but never in the complete album format. This is a very well-recorded album and there is definitely a lot of layers and levels going on in nearly all the tracks. I do a lot of my regular listening through headphones and Avalon was made to be listened to with headphones. This is a great late night/mellow out album but I don't think I could listen to it in the middle of the afternoon or when I had plans for later in the day.

I'll give it an 8 out of 10 because of that.

This is another album I already have in my collection and before a listen I would have said it deserved an 8. But I gave it a spin the other day (forgot to vote afterwards) and found it sounded a little dated now, which surprised me. Still a good work though and I really love the title track, but on reflection its now 7/10 for me. Still a good score though ;)

More than this, there really is nothing :)

10/10 - but then, it was a favourite demo record for those of us in dem rooms at the time and this album holds a special place for me.

Nice? it's FAR 'more than this........

How strange, I was listening to this yesterday as I'm in the middle of a bit of a nostalgiafest. This one survived better than Genesis strangely. 6/10 for me - good fun pop.

9/10

I enjoyed this enormously, and it was nice to have my expectations confounded. I worried that the two tracks I was fairly familiar with (More Than This and the title track) would lead to a samey-slushy experience suitable only for dinner parties. Whilst I would happily play it at a dinner party (although a Genius or well chosen playlist is a better bet) the album literally is so much More Than This. Not as boisterous or fun as some of their earlier stuff (Manifesto perhaps?), but mature and sophisticated. Nice one.

5/10 for me
First 5 albums wonderful
Manifesto almost there
Avalon not really good enough for me to buy

Played this twice now and would agree with others that it is superbly performed, produced and recorded. It ought to score a straight 10 - yet there is something about it that prevents it from being my favourite Roxy album. I think the problem is it is too lush and well produced - comfortable if you like: Roxy Music embracing AOR!

Their first albums were novel, surprising and slick - yet had an edge about them. Someone suggested Avalon as being something you play whilst having a dinner party. Well IMO when hosting a dinner party nothing should be played in the background, and any music relegated to background music is not worthy of the name. Avalon is better than that, it's not a bad album but not as good as its predecessors.

7/10 seems a fair score to me.

Always a favourite of mine, the sound quality is outstanding on my SACD and it contains four of Roxy's greatest ever songs. An almost perfect 9/10.

Was this when BF started wearing suits and became Mr Smooth ? Didn't like it, bit too 80's and lounge grooviness for me although I do for some reason have found memories of the title track so I'll give it 4/10.

I don't even need to listen to this album all the way through again to know that I'm giving it 10/10… one of my favourite albums of all time and also has my favourite track of all time Avalon…

Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I don't like Roxy Music, I don't like Brian Ferry's voice. I don't like this album.
