Beechy no longer has the time to run his thread called: Great Threads Revisited: The AOS Thread Of The Week, so I’ve offered to resurrect it……..

Link to Nick’s original thread:
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2727

I’m keen to see that members don’t get too tied up in what’s going on right now at the expense of appreciating what a great resource The Art of Sound has become.

So the first one is 'Does Size Matter?':

This week's rave from the grave was started by Mudbug:

Has your life been influenced by a pop song?
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=714

The premise is that you find what was number 1 in the charts on the day you were born & decide whether that song somehow charted your destiny.

The original post links to the home page of the site, but this one takes you direct to the Birthday Number 1's page:

http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/birthdayno1

..........mine was 'Get Off My Cloud' by the Stones, both in the UK & the US, a track I heartily approve of. But our colonial cousins in Australia were pretty turned on by 'Que Sera Sera' by Normie Rowe and the Playboys at the time & perhaps that laid back sentiment was more akin to my attitude to life than what the Stones had to say!

Sorry Mike,
I felt 'out of things' when I first joined and didn't have an avatar like everyone else. I hadn't a clue how to create my own, but saw that one on another, US based, forum, (not hi-fi related). By trial and error I found that, if I right clicked on it and chose the 'Save Target as' option, I could 'pinch' (borrow) it. I'm actually quite surprised that no one has made any comments before, but there's not accounting for taste, particularly on this forum !! :lolsign:
Speaking personally, my tastes lie much more in the Daphne DD area ;) but can't create my own. If it's easy, I am open to a brief course of written instructions (I'll try not to get Marco too excited by any replacement ) .

Its easy if you know where to look ;). Seriously do a google image search and use key words like say 1930' pin ups or 1940' or 50's and see what come up...I would use your search filter option set to moderate....off and you will get porn...low and you'll get nothing.

Or put a date in and the word fashions etc and see what come up.

Sunday night again, which is my 'From the Grave' time.

I've always thought this week's thread is the best example the The Art of Sound' has as proof of what a great place this is. It exemplifies the spirit of everything that is good about the site & it's members. It also admirably displays the power of the internet. Everyone involved should feel very, very proud of themselves. I remember it, as it was evolving, & how I just wished I could help out in some way too.

The thread itself has taken quite some finding, though! But looking for it gave me the chance to squirrel away several future subjects for 'From the Grave'.

If anyone has suggestions for suitable links, they should PM me.

As with all of the weekly submissions I make to this thread, comments relevant to the original post really should go onto the thread rather than here.

Anyway, the thread was started by Alex D:

This week I'm offering a triple headliner on the subject of record cleaning
– an important subject for several reasons.

A clean disc sounds better.
Vinyl's getting pricey, so it's an investment worth protecting.
Some vinyl is irreplaceable……..so, ditto.
It will help to prolong the life of your stylus – if only because you won't need to clean it so often & the chance of a costly slip will be greatly lessened.

First on the bill is a thread started by 'shahsy' which discusses manual cleaning & then moves on to machines (& back again).
Microfibre cloths and washing up liquid are the business!
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2286

Next up, Philip (Baron) wondered whether a record cleaning machine might be a good investment.

This thread was started by Andy (abc1337)

I think it's particularly pertinent at the moment on The AoS because there is one thread in particular that's currently running, where the word 'accurate' is being used quite a lot.

It's important to have a readily updated frame of reference to what real music played by real instruments actually sounds like.
Because, actually guys, it's quite easy to forget
You can forget what a din a real drumkit can make - so much that it hurts.
You can lose touch of the fact that some real instruments played by competant professionals can sound uncomfortably bright and downright in your face - so much so that it's uncomfortable.
You can also forget how a sensitively played instrument can convey incredibly complex emotions with just one note.
Real music.....................

So …………What do you play?

A good point of conclusion to Brian's thread is that a nice chap over on the Slim Devices forum came up with a nice bit of program to permit Squeezebox users to access the AAC+ streams from Squeezecenter/Squeezebox Server.

This week's Taphonomical Adventure

About this time last year, iabobby (David) wanted to know the best way to spend his 800 Euro voucher for hi-fi. He didn't get much help, which is a bit of a shame, as he never came back to post again - and rather unlike the usual way things go on the AoS. So why don't we take this question & answer it as if he's just posted it. I for one, would be interested in the different approaches that people may have for this size of budget. What would be really great would be if we could find out what he did buy & how it's working out for him.

Roll up, roll up folks! Get yer weekly dose of AoS Grave Robbing here!

Despite my extreme ambivalence for all things Christmassy due to extreme over-exposure to the commercial horrors that this season appears to entail in the modern world, this week, we're going all sleigh bells and slushy sentiments. (Humbugs not implied or intended)

I'm only too happy to comply with special requests for this thread and this post is the result of the first I've received. It's from AoS member Alex (UK). Alex was about to start a thread about Christmas Songs, but did a search first and found that there was one already.

Back in November 2008, Mudbug asked this question:

What is the greatest Christmas song ever?

"John Lennon, Happy Xmas (War Is Over), Fairytale Of New York, The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Bruce Springsteen, Do They Know Its Christmas, Band Aid or something else?"

http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1460&highlight=favourite+christmas+songs

Anyone who turns this into a discussion of Mariah Carey, or her legs, will get a personal visit from Marco, who will stuff a whole Holly bush down your pantaloons.

Thanks again to Alex for the suggestion.

OK folks - this week we're going to give some mouth-to-mouth to a DIY thread. Although, I see Angelo (Angelo888) is a Trade Member.

Anyway, this is thread number 653 from June 2008 - 'A Bass Horn is Born'.

Mike said something in one of his posts there about the sensitivity of some of the speakers in question, but I think the comment applies to the whole original post, to be honest:

I don't know about 'From the Grave' – this one's from the dawn of time as far as The Art of Sound is concerned – so it's a little bit more like 'From the Maternity Ward'

Marco posted Thread Number 9 from the 22nd of January 2008, when The Art of Sound was only 6 hours old………or 6 hours after the first post anyway (6 hours to the minute, in fact!)

.......a bit of a victim of thread drift, but the subject is interesting. I chimed in waaaay after the fact to try & bring it back to base, but it slipped through the net - I guess everyone who had an opinion had already expressed it. Maybe some of the newer members have something to add. Or maybe some of the original posters have some new experiences...........?

Back on the subject of vintage gear again this week. I don't necessarily agree with some of the opinions expressed here but the premise of the original post is an interesting question.

I've got 3 questions:
So just how far have we come since the good/bad old days?
Is the art advancing or is there nothing new under the sun?
How many posts do you need to turn a discussion about an Audio Research SP10 preamp into one about a Technics turntable?

So this one was thread number 707 & it came from June 2008.
It was started by Purite Audio sorry Mr Purite, I still don't know your real name.....

Last week's choice seems to have been a good one
So now it's time to put the blindfold on and chuck a dart at the list of threads to see what we can find. That really is how I do it - my monitor is full of holes, y'know!

So, at the risk of scratching at Alex UK's wound, this thread's from one of the dearly departed...............

This thread is number 1150 from October 2008 and it was by AbibiaEtheria who had a rather short, but auspicious tenure on The Art of Sound. Unfortunately we never had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with Abibia enough to know their real first name. Maybe it was Abibia - I must say I do like the idea of Etheria as a last name!

As this week we've got a Bank Holiday Weekend & I've got nowt better to do for a few moments, I'm going to do an Easter Special From the Grave. In fact, it's going to be a double, with part two at the end of the Easter break.

It was a request from Hamish to redo this thread & actually it's almost exactly 6 months since it first came up and it links up very nicely with something I've got in mind for the next one.

So, back in October 2009, Dave Cawley posted up a list of the most prolific posters on The Art of Sound. It caused much hilarity among all. In the last few days, we've had several people with milestones (3 & 4 thousands), so I think the timing is spot on to light a fire back under it.

I'll be posting some new statistics very shortly so you don't need to go checking for yourself.

OK, so I promised a double bill for this weekend. Here's Part II & it's directly related to Part I.

The thread I have in mind is Thread No. 1160 and it was started by Marco back in October 2008. Marco chose to call his shiny new thread:
500 Members - A Small But Significant Milestone!

However, it's something that was said by another member that we're addressing here.

This thread was supposed do what it said on the tin, but I think it was the one that set the standard for AoS thread drift! Not only that, but all those concerned have tried and failed to surpass this benchmark ever since.

So we start on membership numbers and slip away from that by about post number 10 or 11. Then we wobble our way around various topics such as:

When and how various people 'popped their cherries',
The glory or otherwise of the iPod,
Other fora,
Various cartridges,
Various turntables &
Drive systems thereof,
The first mention (that I'm aware of), of Anthony's AoS amps,
A visit to the Naim factory with a side trip to a Naimperson's pad for dinner, holidays
.............etc etc.

Eventually, Senor Snapper managed to get the thread back on track but not till post number 97!!!! Then StanleyB piped up with his post which is the one that I'd like to bring to your attention here. If you read it, you should finally begin to see what the connection is between this & the 'From the Grave' offering I made the other day about the AoS Top 20 Posters.

So go to:
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1160&page=10
......for Stan's post first.

To hell with it - It's about music again this week, folks!

A double header as it's a Bank Holiday weekend.

For the Main Course:
In July of last year, Jeremy Marchant gave us thread number 3359
Songs with orchestra worth exploring
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3359

I actually don't really like this type of music too much - I prefer my orchestral music to be without singers, but it's always interesting to explore & your tastes will almost certainly be different to mine. Spotify will let you hear a lot of this stuff if you'd like to give some of it a try.

For the Pudding:
Jeremy gave us thread number 3373 - also in July. This was a great sampler for classical music & Jeremy explained a good way of easing yourself into things while also providing some background information.

Hiya folks!
It's time to rake over the Art of Sound coals again. I spent some time this morning looking for a good 'un for you to read. This isn't going to knock Harry Potter off the best seller lists, but it's certainly worth reading and acting upon.

I don't care who you are, what you system is or how jaded a hi-fi casualty you are. Please read this and do the obvious thing - check your own system for yourself.
Let's see how many people are big enough to own up that they've made a mistake!!!!

If this all sounds a bit cryptic, then I suppose you should read the thread.
In March 2009 Smudge314 posted his first and last thread. We never learnt his real name & we haven't heard from Senor Smudge since his 3 posts here, but maybe his short tenure here will help some of us out in some small way.

He was having a spot of bother, so he called out for assistance:

On Tuesday this week it will be two years since I volunteered to take on this thread from Nick's original one ( http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2727)
I really enjoy looking back over the old stuff to try to find something every week that I think has become topical again, or might just be of interest to folks who may have missed it first time around. Apart from just the one time, I've managed to find something every single week for two years & that says something about the members here, I think.

So this week it's a bumper issue to celebrate.
This was a story that we all followed with great interest - I think we were all cheering Steve (Twelvebears) on as he reached the final straight of his journey to rebuild some much loved speakers into slate cabinets.

So, it's back to business again with this one.
Anthony (TD) started this thread back in April 2008 . It was the 500th thread on the forum and it posed a rather good question that probably wasn't thrashed through as much as it could have been. Here's a good one:

Would you be willing to admit that you may have made some mistakes in arriving at your current beliefs and so realise that they perhaps need some updating or reassessing?

Let's expose and confront our own realities. How do you honestly see yourself in this regard? Hence the title, let's do some introspection of our genuine hi-fi and music loving motives - and be as honest as possible!

We're off to the AoS Library this week, to take a look at the Bibliography of Hi-Fi Literature. Why don't you see if there's anything that you fancy seeking out & reading? Why don't you tell us if you know of any books that should be included in the list?

Comments for this one should go into this location (http://theartofsound.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=35) in the Library Cafe.

I'm offering this thread as a possible subject for ressurection because of something Colin Wonfor said in his introductory post in the Welcome section a few days ago. He said that one of the reasons he reads hi-fi fora is so that he can keep tabs on what potential customers really want from a product (or words to that effect).

It ties in nicely with a thread from back in the mists of time.
So, here's your chance to tell hi-fi design engineers what you want them to make for you - make the most of it!

I was away last week & preoccupied with something else last night, so after two Sundays on the trot without disturbing the deceased, it's time for a quick one.

Recently there was a bit of talk about platter mats & I & others suggested some ways of making one from cork and cork/rubber compounds. Well, it turns out that hiding away in the back of AoS there was another idea.

Back by popular demand, "From the Grave" has returned from the grave.

For new members, From the Grave was a feature started by Nick (Beechwoods) as a means of resurrecting old threads that had been forgotten but still had life in them for further discussion. For some time this task was ably carried out by Chris (The Grand Wazoo), now the baton has been passed to me.

So in honour of the founder, this week's From the Grave is from Nick himself who suggested Cover versions that are/were better than the originals. See if you agree with him and with the other members who contributed.

This week’s thread resurrected ‘From the Grave’ is ‘Six Degrees of Freedom’ (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?7365-Degrees-of-Separation) . First started by Alex_UK, back in August 2010, is not so much a discussion thread but more of a game.

Based on the premise that anybody in the world is related, or connected, to everybody else by six degrees, Alex applied this to recordings. Staring off with Queens of the Stone Age and ‘Song for the Dead’, the challenge was to follow it with another recording that in some way might be related to the first: through a commonality of performers, or producers, or cover-work artist, or just about anything. Then this second recording was connected to a third, and so on.

In fact as the thread progressed the connections became more and more convoluted, complicated and spurious; which made the game even more interesting. So if you can appreciate the connection between Cliff Richard and Janis Joplin, or the connection between The Manic Street Preachers and Steve Winwood, you might like to play along.

For some reason the thread came to an abrupt halt after 756 posts with Chris’s (The Grand Wazoo) connection to Teenage Fanclub ‘Words of Wisdom and Hope’, but that is no reason why someone out there could not make a connection to a different recording. Go on have a go - you might enjoy it!

This weeks ‘From the Grave’ nomination holds the distinction that it is, so far, the only thread that has been nominated before.

However I make no apologies for this as the subject matter: favourite female singers, is one that is well worth talking about and updating. It is always good to learn of artistes that had previously been unknown, as well as announcing any new discoveries that have been made.

So dating from April 2009, I give you this week’s ‘From the Grave’:

‘The Dancing Walker’s Favourite Female Singers’ (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?2640-The-Donkey-Walker-s-Favourite-Female-Vocalists)

This week’s From the Grave is a thread started by Erik van Voorst back in May 2011, entitled ‘Hi There – My Homebuild Stuff’ (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?11349-Hi-There-My-homebuild-stuff).

We on AoS were so amazed, knocked out, flabbergasted and generally impressed by Erik’s DIY skills that the thread was voted Thread of the Year in 2012. And as a reward, Erik was given a new title.

The thread has been chosen before in From the Grave, but I make no apology for bringing it to your attention again. Sadly some of the photographs are missing, and Erik no longer posts here, but what photos remain are sufficient to inspire all DIYers everywhere. And if you’re not a DIYer, well you can just admire Erik’s superb handywork: there cannot be that many people who have built their own CD player!

For this weeks From the Grave, I’m rather embarrassed to say I’ve chosen a question (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?4835-Fidelity-to-what-Or-what-are-we-tying-to-achieve-with-all-our-expensive-gear) I posed back in 2009, asking what is the purpose of our (often expensive) audio gear.

I chose this thread not because I started it, but because of the variety and, in some cases, the well-written replies it received.

Now that we are in the Prom season, some members I am sure will be attending these live performances, and there are those who may have attended Glastonbury this year. Both, I am sure, would agree that their sound systems cannot get close to reproducing the experience of these occasions – so what is it we are looking for to get out of our system?

What does it for you?

Delving into the archives for this week’s From The Grave, I found this thread (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?4739-CD-DVD-Cleaning) started by Alex_UK in December 2009.

Alex asked whether anyone cleans their CDs, apart from a perfunctory wipe on one’s T-shirt or jeans? Several methods were proffered, including the recommendation of some proprietary cleaners.

For my part, I have rarely found the need to clean CDs; only if there is a finger mark do I simply breath on the CD and wipe the mark away (using radial strokes) with a lint-free microfibre cloth.

So what methods do you use – are they as drastic as a method proposed by Alex in a different thread: put them in your dishwasher!?

Since some of us have been chatting in Analogue Art recently about the 'old nail' (A.K.A Denon DL-103), and as I'll be taking my modded Technics T/T, fitted with said DL-103 to NEBO 4 next week, I thought it might be of interest to revisit my modifying (courtesy of Nick Gorham) of the venerable old Lentek MC head amp, which just happens to form a superb, musically synergistic, partnership with the DL-103.

Have any other DL-103 fans tried using a Lentek? Perhaps you hadn't thought of it - never mind the notion of modifying one and transforming it into a different sonic league entirely. Find out how, here:

This week’s ‘From the Grave’ is a thread started by Alex (magiccarpetride) way back in July 2011.

Alex asked the seemingly simple question: “Is audiophilia not for everyone? (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?12499-Is-audiophilia-not-for-everyone)”

Or to put it another way: “How can a music lover not be interested in sound quality?” There was some robust discussion, which only drifted off topic towards the end of the tread. However the question was never fully answered to Alex's satisfaction, nor was one that was also asked – why do many professional musicians have, and are content with, very modest sound systems?

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Let’s hear what you folks have to say about RCMs… How important do you consider their use is to your enjoyment of vinyl? :)

Please respond on via the link above.

Apologies for being a little late, this week's From the Grave is a thread (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?9733-Koss-PRO-4-AA-vintage-headpones) started by Marco in February 2011 on the Koss Pro 4AA headphones.

I have chosen it as there was much discussion about the comfort (or otherwise) of using headphones and the possible trade-off with sound quality. Several other makes were mentioned as a valid alternative to the Koss (including a confusion with the '70s manufacturer Ross!)

Unfortunately, most of the images are missing or their links broken (a hazard when choosing old threads for resurrection 'From the Grave'), but the thread ought to encourage some new discussion amongst all you headphone users out there.

Here’s an interesting (and hopefully informative thread for some folks), originally posted by Stephen, ‘worrasf’, on 3/5/11, seeking advice on which “old” DAC to buy to use in his Quad system: http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?11556-quot-old-quot-DAC-wanted-any-suggestions

Perhaps some other members in a similar position will consider the suggestions therein useful? :)

This weeks ‘From the Grave’ is a post made back in March 2008 (when the Forum was only 9 weeks old!): http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?342-Rip-off-British-Hi-Fi-Industry .

The original poster had a clear mistrust of hi-fi dealers, who in his opinion simply took their ‘cut’ without offering anything in return. It was speculated that in the future, with the emergence of the Internet and on-line fora, the presence of hi-fi emporia would disappear from the high street; those interested in buying audio gear would read reviews on-line and in audio discussion groups, also on-line, then having made their choice buy on-line from the likes of eBay and other Internet shopping sites.

A somewhat ‘lively’ and ‘robust’ debate took place from protagonists on both sides of the argument. Unfortunately however, both sides became entrenched in their views and the debate stagnated. Now that we are some six and half years on from the original post and on-line shopping is becoming more prevalent, do Members think there is still a place for specialist dealers or retailers, who will obviously charge for their service, but who, one trusts, can provide bespoke advice?

What are your thoughts on the matter?
