Long delay starting up.

I assumed my Goodmans digi box was on the way out when I was having to wait ages for a picture to come on screen, but having had a shiny new Virgin TiVo installed recently, I'm still getting the same issue.

It is connected via my Onkyo AV receiver, so the signal goes from the TiVo, into the Onkyo, and then to the screen, I'm assuming maybe the Onkyo is causing it, but why, I have no idea.

Help anyone?

Delve into your on-screen menu's, on our Panasonic there's a power saver setting, which put's it into a deep sleep, when switched on from here it takes quite a while to load everything up, it's confirmed by Pana' to be a slow start up from here as it's acknowledged in the trouble shooting guide. On ours you can set the time of power save mode, so we have it come on at 6am and go off at 10pm. It's just the same on my mother in laws cheap Hitachi box, both are PVR's btw.

The Onkyo's HDMI handshaking is notoriously flaky. Not sure about the latest models but mine is about 2 years old and sometimes I have to unplug it from the mains because it completely refuses to give me picture from either my Virgin Tivo, PS3, or Raspberry Pi. It's OK as long as you have the TV on and set to the correct AV input, then switch on the receiver, then finally switch on the source, but get the order wrong and it will either A. Take a good 20 seconds to handshake, sometimes more, or B. Not handshake at all, requiring a power cycle of the receiver. Apparently Sky boxes have serious issues with Onkyo amps from around this time.

It's the one annoyance with an otherwise fine amplifer.

Have you tried a reset of some sort though on the tivo?

Tim, recently reset the TiVo as it claimed it was overheating, which it wasn't!

And Richard, I'll try what you suggest, as it is I use a Logitech Harmony that powers up everything at approx the same time. My Onkyo is 4 years old, and has never done this up until about November time.
I'll experiment and let you know.

Update time.

I have tried numerous combinations of what got switched on first, it made no difference.

But what I did find is that it's the Onkyo that is to blame as it takes an eternity for the Blu Ray playe to start as well.

Any other suggestions guys and girls?

Will get round to that update when I can....meantime, I popped into 7 Blokes in Chelsea yesterday to see if they had any thoughts on the problem.

The guy said it might be my HDMI cable.

How bizarre......I had inadvertently left the doors closed on the Ikea thingy where all my kit is whilst watching TV a few nights ago, and when I came to power off everything, the amp was very hot, but on powering up the next evening, the picture on the screen was as quick as it used to be........odd dontcha think? :scratch:

Have you tried resetting it back to factory? Turn it on and, holding the VCR/DVR input button down, press ON/STANDBY. You should see 'clear” on the display and the unit will go into standby mode.

If that doesn't sort it, then it could be faulty caps - my mate had to recap his.

It also sounds like you may need to improve ventilation all round - if your Tivo says it's overheating, and your Onkyo's getting hot.....
