View Full Version : TC7510 + Maplin L11BQ power supply question

Just checking. Is this power supply the one that the esteemed Mr Beresford recommended using at 13.5v instead of 12v?

Had both of these for ages and am feeling ever so slightly paranoid that my memory might be playing tricks with me. Had a brief search also and couldn't find anything either.

Cheers for any advice

Those were the days. Yes you can use them together. But later mods that I described used the linear CB radio power supply from Maplin as a far better power source.

Thanks for the speedy response Stan.

I haven't had a chance, until this morning, to have an extended listen with the Maplin power supply switched to 13.5v.

To my ears: slightly better detail, separation & imagery.

Does the power supply you mentioned ( is this the one? http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=231) offer a "significant" upgrade and does it need any mods because it is 13.8v??

That's the one. I have the 5amp version. The 13.8V is fine.

As a matter of fact, I have been trying out this power supply with a Bushmaster that has a 12V master regulator instead of the existing 9V regulator. The 9V one was needed so that the BM can be used with 12V batteries. So I can't use the modded BM with a battery.

Check to see if the voltage regulator on the front PCB of the TC-7510 is a 7810 or a 7812. If it is a 7810 then you can replace it with a 7812 if you are thinking of using the Maplin CB radio PSU. The two changes combined will produce a leap in sound quality. It's a mod I never had time to further develop and list, but the TC-7510 is still being made and sold to resellers. So there are enough people out there who would be interested in this mod.

I have one of those CB psu's in the shed somewhere, sure it is the 5 amp one as well......think I will dig it out if you reckon it will run my 7510 Stan...would just have to make up a lead..don't know what reg is in it...would it matter???

You might have to make up the lead. I used to use the lead from an unused TC-7510 PSU. Just make sure that the centre pin on the DC plug is going to the positive side of the CB power supply.

cheers Stan....would I have to change the regulator or is that just optional??

looking at the data sheet i dont see any reason why both should not work

I wouldn't change the regulators just yet. You'll have to wait for at least a few more weeks before I can produce some screen shots of something I am working on to give my older DACs a new lease of life.

found the PSU and plugs came today..wired it all up and....doh! ...the plugs are way too big...ggrrrrrr..
these were supposedly 2.1 mil connectors but look about twice the size I need.....think I'll scout about and try and find an old wallwart with the right size of connector and snip off the cable.....can nothing ever work first time!

The TC-7510 requires a 1.3mm plug. The 2.1mm plug won't fit.

i will need to make a trip to maplin for a convertor....thanks for the size...

As an update I got it working but did not sense any real improvement so have gone back to the wallwart..must be my ears

went back to the maplin Power supply...starting to feel it to be better......sometimes these things take time to settle in...

I am using the 5 amp 13.8V Regulated Mains Power Unit which is pretty well built and gives a nice quiet floor ...very little noise from the unit either although the rear does get hot so you need to ventilate it....it has overcurrent protection as well a s/c protection...nice unit for the cash and as I already had one it makes sense to use it.
I would say it is a very good buy though.

Have to report that this setup is improving with use ...dont know if it is the equip settling in or me ears tuning in but I really like it.
Thanks to all and Stan especially

That's good news. I used one of them from time to time with my Bushmaster DAC as well. I now use it with my SB Touch.
