I have chance to get one of these and wondered if 50 quid was too much, I just fancied a little summer project.

Yep I guessed I wanted something further up the Lenco tree but this is something I intend to tinker with and not make a show deck! So, if £50 is a fair enough price?

I believe the '72 has the 'lightweight' pressed steel platter and smaller bearing. The steel platter will cause issues with MC cartridges. Better off with the '75...yes £50 is too much IMHO.

You can 'upgrade' the 72 by fitting the 75/78 bearing & platter. They are often for sale on eBay.

It's a regular modification Andr'e. There are a number of articles about it on various websites. I'm sure a visit to Lenco Heaven will shed light.

There was somebody recently on AOS with one modified this way.

Here we go, just found it: http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22294&highlight=lenco

Hi,

I have the 72 and did the heavyweight platter myself. You need to elongate the holes slightly and buy a heavy platter and 75 bearing.

Why do it? With the 75/78 the platter is low and sometimes there are problems if you want to fit another arm.

The lightweight steel platter is fine for mm's and it normally has the metal idler wheel (which is better). I was using a Musicmaker on it but things went wrong when I put an Ortofon Rondo Bronze on as the Neodymium magnets stuck the thing to the platter. That's the only reason I went for the heavyweight mod.

£50 is about right if it's in good nick with arm and a cartridge.

Cheers,

Steve

Yes it can be swapped via butchery (As Stephen points out) but as a straight swap nein.

I think £50 is a good price - what else can you buy for that sort of money?
OK, so it's not a 75 or 78, but if you just want something to play with for a while, then it's fine. You can pay £40.00 for a used idler wheel and £10.00 for an idler spring on Ebay at the moment - there's your fifty quid right there.
Go for it - you never know, it might be fun

That proves nothing. They've still got until 18 June so anything can happen. All I know is the 72 was bloody good when I bought it and even better when I modded it. The Trampolin for my LP12 cost more than the deck and mods. I've sold the LP12/Lingo/Trampolin 'cos I prefer the Lenco.

Probably right. What's £50 in the great scheme of things really? Not much and if it gives you a working half decent TT to tinker about with, which can be upgraded significantly. Why not?
