Very nice Turntable, Ian. It looks very high-end. And the finish is excellent! Thank you for sharing it with us.

Cool pad and system, Ian :)

I agree with Beechy - love the turntable! What is it? I don't recognise it. I see there's an SME Series III arm on it, though.

Could we also have a breakdown of the full system as shown above? :smoking:

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the kind comments.
The Turntable is my own jobbie using;
www.diyaudio forum's Mark Kelly controller with Maxon dc motor, VPI Scout platter, clamp and bearing. SME III rewired arm with AT33PTG mc cartridge and CA640P phonostage.
Plinth is Canadian solid stave walnut, Actually the sink cut out from our kitchen worktop, Cost a bomb so had to find a use for the left overs ;)
Took a long time to tune, ended up with some heavy rubber damping strips with silicon and then a layer of granite. CLD principle. Over the moon with the results, way ahead of my modded TD321.
Modded all the kit with better valves, caps, PSU's etc.
Modded Jolida JD100 cd player and Stock Cambridge audio tuner.
B&W 602S3's powered by ASL wave 8 mono blocks and wave pre.
The room has heavily sound proofed party walls, the thickest underlay and two heavy sofa's. Does a great job of damping the boom tiss etc.
If you are passing south east london, let me know and drop in for a listen.
Cheers

Nice system I think you should have plenty of room for a pair of Open Baffles but they will need more space behind the wall

Very nice kit there. I looked up the amps you are using and they look very good for the modest price, especially if planning to upgrade them as you have.

Thanks,
Already upgraded the hell out of them, Psu diodes, all resistors in signal path, coupling caps. Rca connectors and binding posts. NOS Mazda valves.
nothing i can think of left to do!
They sound real sweet!

Ian,

How do you find the SME Series III works with the AT-33PTG?

I just wondered as it was originally designed for low-compliance MM cartridges, which of course your AT isn't.

Personally I like the arm, although SME apparently don't consider it as their finest moment.

Hi Marco,
I think the SME III is a great arm and have no problem with the AT cart. I think the compliance suits light arms but most people find the AT tracks so well it work with most light and meduim weight arms. I would recommend rewiring any 20 year old arm,SME III included. Have a read of this thread, and search VA and you will see owners with both the III and V and think there is nothing in it performance wise, that's what made me buy one ;).

Interesting discussion there, Ian; although somewhat confusing... What's the final consensus of opinion then: does the AT33PTG prefer a higher mass arm or not? :)

Bloody hell, that's quite a statement! I'm not necessarily disagreeing, but I suspect that owners of the V (or even IV) here might have a different view...

Perhaps that's why SME 'diss' the III, somewhat - because it was 'too good' and might affect sales of the V! ;)

Hi Marco,
I wouldn't make that statement myself either! I have only heard a V briefly and couldn't compare the two. I decided to buy the AT33PTG first, then started looking for a low mass arm to suit. the AT1100 and SME III were on the list, i just found a SME III first.
All i can tell you it works a lot better in the SME than the Linn Basik + i also own.
Are you thinking of buying one?
Cheers

No, no it wouldn't suit my cartridge selection or my 'high-mass' T/T sensibilities ;)

I was just curious - always seeking to learn!
