I've got a very serviceable Toshiba TV - the HD picture is great, but as usual the sound is mediocre indeed.

So I decided to see how cheaply I could upgrade the sound. Today I picked up a QED A240 amp for £30. It looks very serviceable (not tested yet) and even has audiophile feet - slices of cork glued to the bottom!

Just need some small but decent speakers now. Macca recommended JBL Control 1 which look just the ticket but for now I want to spend even less! Anyone got any thoughts ??

A pair of Wharfedale Diamonds could be a cheaper alternative - IV's if you can get a good set (picked mine up cash on collection for £8 - is that cheap enough? :))

I was looking at Diamonds last night!

Fabulous speakers. I had a set of MK 1's for many years and adored them.

Look fab Brian - love the look of the Q's and the front port is good. But with an RRP of £140 they will most likely end up beyond my meagre budget. Will keep an eye on them though - cheers!

I had a pair of the little JPWs and they were very musical little speakers. They don't seem to make much money on Ebay.

Everybody seems to love the JPW's - they are probably just a bit too big for me though. Will get the tape measure out later to check ...

Cracking amps those old QED's. I can highly recommend Denon [Mission!] SCM-51 little bookshelf jobbies, had them running off some expensive gear they are surprisingly capable.

Should be able to net the Denons s/h for under £30

Absolutely perfect - the SC-M51's go straight onto my watch-list. :)

Mission 780SE. The first model, not second! Amazing little speakers, bags of wellie, detail and transparent too.

James, apologies for my late reply but just wanted to thank you for this recommendation. I managed to buy a pair of the SCM-51's in near mint condition on ebay, for the grand total of £31 delivered. They are a superb combination with the old QED, and have made TV listening much more pleasurable, especially for my son when he's watching his cartoons - those soundtracks really come alive.

Only just seen this so sorry for not replying. Glad to hear you got a nice pair & are happy with them

They seem to be very much "under the radar" as most people have only heard them on the end of Denon's micro system but on the end of a decent amp they really sing !
