Hi everyone
I'm looking for suggestions for speakers to suit a small, approx 9'6" x 11' room, that can be adequately powered by an 8W single ended 300B amp.
Any ideas anyone?

I seem to keep banging on about DIY,but IMHO the perfect solution for you would be a pair of Fonkens,a DIY design from the planet-10 hi-fi website. These use a 4-inch full-range Fostex driver and they sound fantastic! Check out the website, not sure if you can also purchase flat-pack cabinets for these. Also, have a word with Dave The Bass on the Audio-Talk website, who has built a pair of these, which I've heard and to be quite frank,I think you would struggle to better these for sane money in a commercial design. They really are that good IMHO.

An idea as to budget may be helpful Mr McShads... :)

Giz a clue? (You'll be hard pushed to get more for your money than going the DIY route though TBH)

Cheers...

Indeed :)

And a quick 'hello' in the welcome area wouldn't go amiss either ;)

Hi Malcolm

Glad you could make it over from the other place...You are more than welcome. This is where I contribute now.

I take it that the Feastrex didn't work out. What went wrong ? The last time we talked you were waiting for them to come. After running in I take it they weren't okay.

Nice to see you...so to speak.

Unlike most Forums we are all on first name terms here (mostly) so pop into the welcome section say Hi and tell the folks a bit about yourself and your system as is now and the music you like. You could also at some time maybe like to post some photos in the Gallery section. It would be really great to see your set up. How did you get on with the AV amp/speakers set up?

Regards Neil

Hi Malcom
Before you buy the spekers its best to check to see how they will work in your room if buying from a dealer a good dealer should be willing to offer this service You probarly have to go for standmounts due to room size but I am sure there will be some larger speakers that will cope with the small room.
Sorry I cannot really recommend myself
where do you live at the £3000 I really would look to finding a good dealer

Hi Neil

Nice to see you too

AV is sorted, Quad 9L and quad Lite and Yamaha 863 amp. Good enough for me.

The Feastrex very good very detailed, almost too detailed? Maybe cause of the small room, and therefor nearfield listening position, a very intense listening experience, almost harsh. Also a bit lacking in the 'warmth' region. I'm back to using the Dulcets at the moment and they really are very good but they would like a bit more than my 8W. So my search to see if I can better them.

Regards
Malcolm

Hi Malcolm

I saw that Alium audio were advertising a new speaker that they are going to demo at the London hi-fi show (this weekend), these are Consonance M12mk2. They are a single main driver and a horn loaded tweeter (maybe mid unit as well...not sure. I can't tell from the photo) Have a chat with Ian Large...I know him quite well and hes a really nice, well informed enthusiast (not just a seller). http://www.aliumaudio.com/10501.html link to Alium Audio website.

Nominal impedance: 8
Sensitivity: 97dB

David Shaw's Icon Audio speakers might be worth looking at...I suspect he will be at the show as well.

Going to the show, if you can, might help as some of the smaller more obscure guys tend to exhibit at this show. Have a listen to the new Aurosal floor standers (I din't like the stand mount ones ) these sort out some if not all of the issues with the smaller A1's. These are very easy to drive.

Ps the Consonace's might be too dear....opps. However if you like them, ex demo units might be available just ask Ian. Link to ex demo speakers http://www.aliumaudio.com/11055.html. Some interesting looking options if your room's not to small.

Hi everyone

Any ideas anyone?

I use a pair of Spendor S6e in a room a few feet bigger than yours, driven them with all sorts of valve amps including a 4w 'flea'...very valve friendly, easy enough load and non-reactive....but...they are no longer made....their bigger brothers the S8e are still made but they maybe a touch too big for your room...

Spendor also have the A6 which is similar to my S6e in dimensions, load and sensitivity so maybe worth checking them out...though I've not heard them myself.

Edit: reviewed in the March edition of Hi-Fi World...may check them out myself! ...Ah, may not be suitable after all....

Thanks for all the replies.
I think I'm looking fo small speakers, not necessarily stand mounts, small floorstanders would be fine. I'm currently using a pair of Dulcets and one of the things I really like about them is how they disappear, even in a nearfield set up. I don't think I would get that with really big speakers.

To my ears,a full-range single-driver speaker images better than anything except statics.I have both so I know! :lolsign:

They don't seem to be very sensitive.
