View Full Version : Advice on a cheap plinth for a Lenco.

I've just bought a nice modded Lenco from SteveO and will need a plinth. Funds are tight at present so a slate plinth is for the future. Any suggestions for a cheap alternative? Steve suggested a material called Tufnol, although he did say it could be tricky to machine. Help needed.

My Turntable platter is manufactured from that, it's simular to Bakerlite.. People will recommend multi Ply constructed plinths.

Thick laminated kitchen worktop with squashball feet (or tenderfeet or summat?). I'm sure there'll be off-cuts available for not much and edging pieces are widely available too..

Just a thought guv...

Thanks for the response. Did you make this yourself? If so how difficult was it? If not who did you get to make it? Sorry lots of questions.

Great idea and potentially very cheap. Love the Garrard pic - thats the turntable I grew up using - when my Dad would let me. Still have it.

Hi Robert
No it's what the platter is made from as part of the design.

Sorry when I read your reply 'platter' didn't register. Presumably if it's good for a platter it should be a good material for the plinth. I guess it should 'damp' resonance well.

When I started this thread I hadn't bothered to check the price of tufnol - not really what I would call a budget material so I guess that's out of the running.

Also worth trying Butchers block, but think David idea is a good one

I think if you check the price of a slab of Tufnol you may be put off. I'd say the easiest would be a nice thick piece of MDF particle board, which is pretty inert, easy to work on and can be finished any way you like, just use some Sorbothane feet underneath.

Yeh i made mine out of 8 layers of 3/4'' MDF, Dead thud when i knock on it.

You say funds are tight. How tight? This lot make fairly cheap plinths and the shipping is quite low. I emailed them and i'ts Baltic ply, apparently the best.

Although not super budget I think the price is pretty good.

You can't go wrong at that price Dave..

Wow those are amazing prices. The Lenco I've bought is a modded GL68 which I think needs less cut out from the plinth.

If I were you I would email them and ask if they can make you one.
If they don't have the template they may allow you to send them one. You can then download it off Lenco Heaven and pop it in the post.

Just a thought?

I saw Steve the other day, the tufnol sheet was to fill the void underneath the deck rather than the whole plinth.

I make the odd plinth too, not sure they're cheap though :stalks:

That Lenco has a pretty simple mechanism underneath, fairly easy to DIY if you can use a jigsaw. Birch ply, or solid beech Ikea worktop saver look reasonable, and easy to work

Last time I was in Ikea, the boards were £8 each

You could try multiple sheets of ply glued together with simple cutouts for motor unit and tonearm. Your local friendly Mr Plywood type building store could probably cut it for you if you did the design drawing for them.
Disclaimer - veneered ply is a sheer cow of a thing to cut without tearing the veneer, a job for the experts with the right tooling.

Thanks for the clarification about the tufnol. So Steve meant a version of the PTP I keep reading about. That makes more sense. He did also say the cut out would be fairly simple. The deck looks good.

Thanks for the help. I may have to save up now having seen these plinths, they look damn fine for the money. I'll get an email sent today to see if its a possibility. I didn't realise plinths of this value were being made.
I could go for one of the cheaper options while I raise funds.

Rob, I suggest you join Lenco Heaven as there is a wealth of knowledge on there.

Many in your position go for a standard plinth first and give it the 'heavy treatment' ie fill in the void underneath with wood to give a better sound. You may be able to pick up a cheap standard plinth to achieve this as many have them lying around as they have upgraded.

Check out the Lenco gallery as there are many nice projects to look at...:stalks:

I am glad in a way that I have been busy at work as it has given me time to trawl the site and make some important decisions as I would have otherwise rushed and made a few mistakes.

Now I feel better informed as to which way to go and stay somewhat within my budget...:eyebrows:

If you want a budget option prop your lenco up on 4 empty coke cans, or alternatively buy some wood and build a proper plinth. You can download the template from Lenco Heaven. I'm not sure you'll get much value from producing anything else in between.

Hi Dave
Great advice. Funnily enough I've been a member for a while (I was given a GL75) but I never got around to that project so I never posted any questions. I've just posted my first question on LH regarding a GL68 template.

The 4 cans idea is certainly leading on the budget stakes! I haven't managed to find the GL68 download on LH. Any help appreciated.

Not sure you'll find one. From memory you just need a cutout for the motor + maybe the speed change.

I've got one here that I need to getroundtuit ;-)

If your DIY'ing, you can make your own templates from cardboard, then transfer onto ply panels. The motor needs air circulation, so don't worry too much about a very tight fit.

apologies rob, i wasn't aware there was a '68' model. My Lenco is a GL59 (L70) which also differs slightly from the L75 'template' to be found on LH. That's the only template on LH btw. All i had to do was make a few extra adjustments to the top 2 layers to accommodate the '59' top plate.

the coke can method will get you started for no money.

I don't think there is a template for a 68. I made one for my 72 out of cardboard and then had a plinth made from a piece of granite kitchen worktop 20mm thick.

If you use ply you can have the size cut at B&Q. Heavy plinths sound better with Lencos.

Look at the completed projects on Lenco Heaven, Some are stunning.
