Love that! I always enjoy seeing "left field" units, that looks like it ought to be worth getting going if you can. It looks like something out of the set of Thunderbirds with those control knobs.

Exactly - from the days when plugs were made properly! Al, polish the pins to a fine shine, clean up the plug and find a matching round-pin socket, plug in the Lenco and enjoy, is my advice! :exactly:

Go on, polish the plug up and take some pics of it - we'd love that :)

Unfortunately, Scott, aesthetically, that does nothing for me. One of the things I love about the 301 motor unit, is how 'dinky' and neat it looks, so why put it in a plinth much bigger than is necessary, thus making it look bulky, rather than dinky!

Yes I know that it's got a 12" arm fitted, but the plinth still doesn't need to be as big as that. I hate all those gaps and the wasted space! For me, this is much nicer, featuring a different T/T (TD124), but with a motor unit with a simliar sized 'footprint' as a 301:

http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/5216/33623135916936d1f1a9o.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/580/33623135916936d1f1a9o.jpg/)

No ugly gaps! Looks superb. The motor unit uses up the entire surface area of the plinth, which is how it should be done with a bespoke product! :exactly:

First impressions are really good, it's certainly a step up from the Nima.
Is it a Jelco build ??

Fresh build plinth too ( already on the bay) the corian arm board is supported on rods connected to the lower deck. I've tested with my stethoscope, and at the base of the arm it's quieter than my usual heavy ply plinths.
It works so well, I've got to transfer the idea.

Regarding earlier photos, I was a bit concerned about the HiCap next the the 32.5? preamp, since low level hum induction happens this way with the two next to each other I remember. Separating the two really did open up the midrange.

Apologies for going Aspergically off-track yet again, but with vinyl sources, this used to be important where Naim was concerned :)

SteveO

Hello Marco, thanks

Hmm thats a difficult one. The first photo was my first bash at a slate plinth, and really first proper Lenco. Plinth is only 25mm thick pool table slate. But its deathly silent and the PTP top plate does wonders for the sound quality, much increased refinement over a standard top plate.

The B51 has a filler plate made from 8mm thick tufnol to fill all the top plate voids to mimic a PTP, and the 35mm thick plinth basicly only has cutouts for motor and on off switch, so not too disimilar from the PTP other than the filler plate, but i would say the PTP has the edge sonically out of these two. But its close.

The bottom PTP is a bit of a monster really. Plinth is big to accomodate two 12inch arms and also 2inch thick, takes two people to lift it! Unlike the Garrad slate plinths this is basicaly all solid apart from the smallish motor cutout.
Just added the Gyro platter and clamp for a different flavour, and likeing the sound it produces a LOT! through my DM2as

Is it better sonically than my first PTP? well, due to its size and weight, its in a different system, housed in the basement, so i have never actually directly compared the two, If anyone would like to come over and help me get it up the stairs they would be most welcome!

Despite playing around with a 401 a little (Thanks Mark) I must say i am the happyest i have ever been with either one of my two system.

But i am getting itchy fingers to build another deck, just for the fun of it!

SteveO
16-03-2013, 12:29
Hi Dave,

Its actually a dual rail snaps with Avondale TPR2s, but of course your absolutley right on all counts, Perhaps i will try moving it to thew bottom shelf

Surprisingly i dont actually get any humm pickup despite the close proximity to the 32.5.

I do worry a little about it being housed on the same stand as the deck, physical vibration from the transformer etc. But having said that i am very happy with the sounds i am getting at the moment.

And domestic harmony does force a few compromises

The 32.5 has 729 cards fitted, i am also useing a dual rail nac12s with bolt down TPRd snaps as outboard phono stage for the B51.

Speakers are Meridian M2s.

I must say the pairing of M2s and Naim preamp is i find, a match made in heaven! I have a discrete version of Meridians own 101 pre, which i really liked, untill i tried the Naim pre that is.

The Naim preamp really brought the M2s to life.

Is that 301 running with a standard bearing?

No, it's got a new grease bearing from Precision Audio Components, this was needed because the solid brass platter is a lot heavier than the standard cast aluminium one - it's something like 10kg in mass.

As you'd expect the 301 motor has no issues driving it :D

Thanks Marco... haha I do like black and gold I must admit, though I like to think I've managed to restrict the bling to some degree... on the arm as you can see I only had the armtube and counterbalance plated, I didn't want the lot done.

There are versions of the 301 rebuilt by Ray Clark which are on a polished brass baseplate... like this one, now this IS bling (I think this is the actual one I auditioned when I was upgrading the plinth):

Your deck is on par with the LTD Gold 1200 Edition.

I kind of like the slight "bling" presentation because it generally halts visitors from touching it. They may reach for it; but, that little small voice saying, "If you break it, you bought it, and might not be able to afford it" causes automatic arm retraction. Great protective measure.

The Mission's a 775SM, £500 in 1983:stalks: I remember visiting my local hi-fi store and drooling over the beige one, but as a poor teenager never enough cash.

The engineering is fabulous, the arm is fixed in an adjustable collet that will accept 12-28mm arm tubes. All on a cam to alter pivot to spindle 208-230.
A bodges dream

Thanks! The finish on the plinths is a work in progress. They've both had tens of coats of oil paint, but it takes months to dry fully, so they'll be getting a few more coats soon. Ultimately I hope to get them to a piano-like finish.

If you're complaining about the orange peel effect on the Garrard top plate itself, that's the original finish, and I intend to leave it original, out of respect.

Maybe inspired by Helius designs, but actually completely different in execution; and rather simpler, courtesy of modern CNC manufacturing.

Hi peter,
only had a quick go with it as i'm away working.
Takes a bit of getting used to as only the small part with the headshell pivots.
Really like it though.
Nicely over engineered.

I do like the way that if you fancied and had 2 decks to test you can just lift it off and plonk it on another deck as it weighs 1.2kg and doesn't have to be fixed.
Will get a sexy arm board made at some point, but not sure what material to use.

Here's my old TD-124, fitted here with Audio Note Arm3 and IQ3 cartridge. The plinth and armboard are from Jim Campbell in the States. Both main and top platters are new from Swissonor; and the main bearing is a Schopper (bought second-hand). The old thing sounds far better than it has any right to - I can't help feeling that no turntable designer nowadays would start with such a complicated thing, but since it does sound so good, I can forgive its foibles and demands for routine maintenance. It works well with other tonearms, eg the Jelco SA-750D and Linn Ittok which get swapped in as I see fit.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s301/hugocass/IMGP1374_zpsad2674c2.jpg

It could do with some cosmetic work to tidy up the paintwork, but that can wait, perhaps until it gets married up with the rather lovely original 1960s Ortofon plinth that I have for it (with bronze Ortofon badge on the front).

Of all the turntables in my armoury, which include a PL-71, Linn Axis, Kenwood KD-770D, Lenco GL75, Logic DM101, the Thorens is the one that I will never sell.

Hmm, should I post it in the belters bit

I understand your confusion, but since the platter of the TD124 is driven by an idler-wheel, the TT is classed as being an idler-drive. This is despite a belt being used in the chain to the motor, to decouple any motor vibration from reaching the platter.

Nice example BTW. :)

That looks lovely! It has also pretty much decided whether I will flush mount my 401 when I get a plinth made, as I'm loving the clean lines of the arm fitted straight to the plinth top without a spacer, and the plinth finish too. I assume it is a layered birch ply type, with some superb looking veneering on top?

Looking good Chris. Love the solid 'Bastin'-style plinth.

Seems a long time ago when I handed over the deck in a certain car park in North Wales. Did you ever get the Utracraft arm up to spec? And have you abandoned the Decca?

Thanks, it is a lovely thing - but it's bloody massive (far too big for a normal sized rack) and it weighs a tonne!
The plinth wasn't made by me but a gent called Carl who is a member of the Lenco Heaven forum (Carlsworkshop) but also sometimes trades via Ebay. He worked like a star to make the plinth and also bent over backwards to troubleshoot it. The walnut is nice and I'm very happy with it - it took a lot of work to settle on a finish that I was happy and I think the result was worth the effort.
The deck sounds fantastic.
I managed to find another Zeta for a good price and, having a spare Koetsu Black, I couldn't resist having the same arm and cartridge combination as the one on my Gyrodec. The Goldring sits beside the Gyro and they are both used as much as each other, neither being better, just different.
The Ultracraft still isn't up and running yet but it will be sometime soon hopefully. The Decca, despite sounding utterly compelling, was not practical because we live in a rather dusty house and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't keep it clean enough to stop having to wait on tenterhooks for the next chance to jump up mid-side to clean it again. I haven't ruled out revisiting Deccas in the future.

Yes, the Ac guys are taking the cues from the golden era. It's a handy arm that comes with a range of counter weights to balance a range of carts. You may also note the protruding appendage which is a magnetic micrometer bias control which is novel. The bearing is surprisingly good and set up simple as the top of the bearing housing has a dimple for protractors... good fun

I know where you're coming from, Ralph. Something chunkier and higher-mass would've been more in keeping with things, but those Orsonic headshells are so eminently tweakable (on all parameters), and as a result maximise the sonic performance from partnering cartridges.

They may look a little 'weedy' and skeletal, but sonically, they're the dog's bollocks! :)

The Arche is quite a curious thing

Indeed. I have one here to evaluate. It's beautifully made, with a much more robust and solid azimuth adjustment system than I've seen before that also gives some fore/aft overhang adjustment. Its main party trick seems to be the pivoting plate to which the cartridge is bolted, so SRA can be adjusted without raising or lowering the arm pillar and thereby altering VTF. It's quite heavy at 18g, so definitely good for lowish compliance cartridges like the Miyajimas.

Excepting its highish mass, the Arche headshell is as 'universal' as you're going to get, but it's fantastically expensive, and that's its main problem.

It works well with Koetsus, IO's etc, it certainly is a heavy headshell and can stretch some vintage arms balance capabilities. It is possible to note settings for different carts / arms too. To these leathery ears the Arche makes a notable difference. The build quality of the headshell is the finest I've personally owned.

Here's a couple of pics of my new turntable, built out of an old Lenco GL75 idler motor unit by my son.
He replinthed it in a heavy layered MDF structure, then oak veneered it all.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7181882/shureonlenco2.jpeg

I have just fitted a brand new Shure M97eX cart to it.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7181882/shureonlenco1.jpeg
The arm is a Rega RB250 but that is going soon, to be replaced by a Mayware Formula IV
a friend has offered for a small fee.
It sounds great and has taken me right back to when I actually enjoyed vinyl; a time before I got suckered in by the flat earth bullshit and came to despise the medium with a vengeance.
It's years since I had anything analogue in my system and TBH, I'm well pleased with the results.

Top one looks lovely. I am looking to try a different plinth for my 401, but I would like to be able to swap arm boards, to accommodate an SME 5, Triplanar, Graham Phantom with an SME mount. The one I currently have is an open skeletal plinth, but visually I would like something more conventional.

Keith, the Panzer is beech impregnated with resin, both are harder, heavier and stronger than birch ply.
I’ve only just got the sme4 and had the Panzar plinth with the right cutout, so changed 2 things at once. Difficult to say if it’s the arm or the plinth that’s responsible for the sound improvements.
In the past I’ve likened Panzer to slate, very fast sounding with no overhang to the bass, I’ve always preferred birch with Corian armboard, however the one above is the 2nd plinth I’ve made with dedicated top plate it really made my Audiomods sing. I’m erring more towards matching plinths to arm.

Neil, as above I’m finding removable armbords a compromise with my latest builds, pick one arm of have a plinth big enough for 2 is my current thinking, all subject to change of course while we learn more :-)

It sounds really good there as well. VTA was a near thing to set up as with the Glider it worked out perfectly, but the arm is set absolutely as low as it can go. I'm afraid poor Fletcher would be rolling in his grave if he knew what sort of table his arm ended up on. A B-12H (with a motor big enough to run a washing machine) is a far cry from a Nottingham.

Lovely stuff, Bruce! Always liked the old Reks, as they were 'proper' turntables, with a long history in the broadcasting industry, so I can imagine that combination sounds very good indeed.

How would you describe the fundamental sound of the turntable itself? I'd imagine it has plenty of 'heft' and drive, in the bass:)

First evening with my Audio Grail-restored 1959 Garrard 301 tonight. It’s in a Russ Collinson walnut/birch plinth with recess for the deck and a second cutout for a future dedicated mono arm. The arm fitted now is a Timestep T-612 with titanium arm tube. On the end of it is an Ortofon SPU Classic GMII. Currently playing Swiss Movement by Les McCann & Eddie Harris, and sounding fantastic. I’m borrowing an Ikeda tonearm cable, which goes into the Ortofon T20 MkII and Aurorasound VIDA phono stage, then my Leben and Harbeth pairing. Really pleased with this setup!
