Here is my Avondale NCC200 mono blocks, the power supply is rated at 1000VA and delivers 14 amps of reserve current, it kicks ass !!

Thank you! Most of them are off eBay, from the States, some from sellers on GEMM and a few from Blighty. I love old pre-rec tapes! And I love The Byrds, especially from 'Younger Than Yesterday' onwards. Clarence White was a genius guitarist (he joined / played with them from 'Sweetheart') and Chris Hillman is a great songwriter, bassist, mandolin player...

The Legacy set - Just A Season? - is great! Especially the live stuff. The Byrds were fantastic live. I never saw them at the time, far too young, but from the recordings they kicked country rock ass. Which is a good thing ;)

Turn!Turn!Turn! & My Back Pages are my all time faves of the Byrds, long summer days, women and free and easy, oh to be a teen again, but not in todays society thank you.

My Back Pages... I've been known to play that back to back obsessively at times :) The drums are just so good. I know it's a Dylan number, but Dylan played by the Byrds is better than Dylan played by Dylan ;) His words and their arrangements and playing is real musical synergy. 'Renaissance Fair', 'Time Between', 'Willin' (bonus track off the 'Untitled' reissue) are probably my top 3 studio cuts. I must admit to listening to The Byrds pretty much daily. Though I don't like to bore people with my obsessive behaviour

We are like conjoined twins Nick ;) hey thank you so much for bedding my images, only been here for 5 minutes and he has already waved his willy at me and bedded my baby's

Bloody 'ell, there's a whole lot of lovin' going on.....:)

Paul, I wish we lived nearer. I'd love to have a go at building my own amp, but need to have a fellow tweaker standing over my shoulder watching while I burn my fingers.....

Great pics by the way and the case for the NCC200 jobbie looks cool as well.

 Hi Dave, hey a known forumite, recieved your mail today, cheers mate.

Yes there are some members on this forum that share my passion for old analogue gear, "bruvva lee luv" is not a bad thing :)
The cases used for both the NCC200 and NAP250 builds were supplied by Les of Avondale Audio, they are very substantial cases and great for DIY builds, if a little expensive.

I thought you were already doing your own DIY fixes and mods, well that is what you have led me to believe ;) it is not that difficult to put together an amp, dexterity and patience being the main requisite.

Ah!.... I was going to ask where you source your cases. They're always a PITA.

Nice work! :)

Thank you Mike, there is a great place Italy where, before the weak £ were very reasonable and superb quality, it's here;

and they are both very helpful ;)

Thanks Paul, I've not seen the second one before. If I have I'd forgot!

I've used Autocostruire before... http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=360&page=12

Hi Mike
Just had a looksy at your phono stage build, very, very impressive, nice work but why do you still use veroboard for the PSU regulator circuits, surely it would be better to buy a few sheets of single sided copper board, scribble the circuit with one of the special etch resist pens and place in some etching solution, that's what I do and the results although not perfect do have a better chance of minimal shorts and broken tracks.

I did notice a lot of issues regarding the surge brightness from the heater filament, this is quite normal as someone suggested and not to cause alarm, I have tested literally hundreds of valves, some do and some don't exhibit this strange behaviour, but assured it is nothing to do with the regulators, in many of my valve guitar amps where there could be 6 double triodes a couple may show this occurance, swap them around and it stays with the valve.

What phono circuit did you use for the phono head amp Mike, or is that your secret ?
I have often considered building a valve pre-amp ( not phono stage ) as I have quite a large selection of NOS Brimars, Telefunk's and Mules that I have gathered over the years, before they were $1000 each, a few Toroids, E and C core traffos that would do the job too, just never gotton round to it, maybe a project for the long hot summer we will have this year, any suggestions for a circuit ??
I currently power my Naim 323 boards from 4x 12V Lead acid cells, I have tried all manner of super regs and keep coming back to the SLA's, there is just something about the scale and presentation using this source of PSU.

why do you still use veroboard for the PSU regulator circuits

That was early stage stuff, the whole PSU got rebuilt onto tag strips (or is that what you meant?) like this:

The actual Phono stage is built on a WD PhonoIII cct board with my own choice of components.

Hi Mike, sorry I didn't see the tagstrip PSU :o I looked at the veroboard earlier version.
so is the WD Phono III a well documented and public domain circuit ?? or is this in kit form ? and can you recommend any line level pre-amps to attempt with a shit hot spec and to die for sound ?? you have got my juices flowing for the warmth of something valve again ;)

The WD Phono III is a currently available commercial design available built or as a kit. The circuit is 'out there' if you know where to look, PM me. ;)

They also do a first class Pre, same applies. This is more or less a single ended triode power amp in miniature! Transformer coupled and everything! :)

Have surf around here: http://wduk.worldomain.net/acatalog/index.html

All of their gear punches WELL above it's weight in price terms.

A few Reel 2 Reel machines I have, only started the collection a few months back although the Tandberg has been with me for a few years now, a car boot find for a few quid.

Tandberg 64X all valve and full of Telefunken double triodes, and yes it works :)

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa59/pulsestudio/R-2-R/STA60033.jpg

Akai GX635D in mint condition, brought this from AudioJumble along with 150 reels of tape, quality is not in the same league as the Technics RS1500 but a lovely machine none the less

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa59/pulsestudio/R-2-R/STA60022.jpg

And finally my prized pocession a simply gorgeous Technics RS1500, had a fair bit of work to do to get this baby up to spec but well worth the time and little cost

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa59/pulsestudio/R-2-R/STA60021.jpg

I also have a Tascam 34 which is a 4 track studio machine in reality, a friend of mine had owned it for many years and decided he was going the digital recording route so I have inherited it, needs a small amount of work to get the spooling sorted out as it needs a helpig gentle shuv to get the thing into FF or REW, no big deal to fix, I hope ;)

 I missed this exchange you rotters! I think the next thing on my list is going to have to be another extension... these big machines are just sooooo tempting, but no more room at the inn :( Still it's great so see such nice pictures of other peoples' decks :)

Bit :steam: I missed the Audiojumble on 8th Feb :( I'll have to make a date for October :)

pulsestudio

See you there in October Nick maybe it will be " fight " for the big ol' R2R's on offer, picked up a superb 1983 Marshall JCM800 valve combo at the Feb Jumble, £325 on the ticket, £200 cash and a SOLD label on the amp, had to wait all day for the seller to agree the deal though, am I happy, bet your frigging life I am :smoking:
Just to put your mind at ease I only see a couple of R2R's in Feb so I don't think you need to lose any sleep mate :)

For me just seeing some nice machines will be a treat :smoking: I'm glad it's not a R2R mecca; my wallet couldn't bear it!
