A fab family day today at Hatfield House in Herts.

http://www.hatfield-house.co.uk/

First day back with my old favourites - the Nikon D50 and 50mm 1.8
I really tried to like the D60 and 18-200 VR but the results just cannot compare!

Here's some snaps in their gardens which had a really intriguing selection of sculptures ...

OMG, that is soooo f***ed up  Very clever though & it certainly makes you look, but it messes up your eyes in a certain way :D

Julian, do I get the impression that you like Marmite? :eyebrows:

Well, I am partial to a bit of the brown stuff, but the mrs set up that account and chose it for me!

Great pictures Julian. Excellent bokeh and exposure. I think the 50mm f1.8 is a stonking lens very underrated imho. I have an AIS and AF D and on both my D70 and D700 they produce superb images. Great resolution and colour and on DX at 75mm it is not far behind my 85mm.

Thanks Mervyn, most kind. :)

It is simply a killer lens for a stupidly low price. What I love about it is I have to spend so little time tweaking the pics afterwards - exposure, contrast and colour are spot on 99% of the time. Just not popular because most people want big range zooms ...

Agree Julian. People tend to pooh pooh it as it is ( or was) the standard lens with any new camera and is not a bling bling zoom !! Its v sharp fast and light and I know of a pro photographer who always keeps one in his bag.

The kit lens they use nowadays is the 18-55 VR, which is sharp enough, but at F3.5-5.6 I was always dissapointed with my portraits - they didn't have that silky sheen you get from the shallow depth of field with the 50mm 1.8.

All these pics where shot on my 6MP D50 which shows how little megapixels mean, unless you want to print off poster size prints!
