A mate has just bought a 1210 and as he is not too interested in upgrading it he asked me to recommend a cartridge. Having read here about so many users of the DL160 I told him to go for it or the 110 - that according to most forums there was virtually no difference in the sound. On looking at phonophono he rang to tell me the 160 is much more expensive than the 110. Has this always been the case, and if so is there a good reason for not opting for the 110 in the standard arm ?

the 160 is about £20 more than the 110 iirc, shouldnt be double!
they're both very very good carts, depends really if you like blue or red really!
i ran the 110 and the 160 on an lp12 with ittok a few years back and it sounded very nice indeed, :)

PhonoPhono doesn't necessarily have good prices, For some items, yes, but not across the board.

For instance, if he wants to buy in euros, he could try here:

http://www.hifi-phono-house.com/Cellules/Denon-Cellules/Denon-MC/Denon-DL-160-High-Output-MC-Systeme--5802.html @ 129€ , the DL110 is at 99€.

But, at the moment, I'd source from the UK, the exchange rate works in the (euro) buyers favour.

Many thanks chaps,

After so long living under the euro I have got so accustomed to high prices in rip-off Britain that it never crossed my mind to buy in the UK. Of course the euro is now 1:1 instead of 1:1.5 so that´s a 30% discount across the board in the short term.

More like 1:1.1 but for a c. £100 cartridge that's not really significant. I just splurged on a tonearm, the day I ordered the rate was 1:1.05, today it's 1:1.12. that's 5 or 6 % in a week or so. I'll have to see what it costs me in the end when the bank takes their 1.75% commision too.

Why couldn't the brits adhere to the Euro to avoid these exchange rip-offs? Anyway, the UK is not always ripoff!

cheers

As buyers we weren't complaining when the rate was 1:1.6 or thereabouts ;)

Only last week I took delivery of a DL110 from HIFIX.Cost,£57 and noted that the DL160 was £72. Also they don't charge for delivery, which is nice.
