BBC Proms

It's BBC Proms season. If you've never been, this is a great year to go with a wonderfully varied programme. Buy tickets in advance or be a Promenader and stand in the centre Arena.

The Proms are all about bringing classical music to the masses. Introduced by Sir Henry Wood in 1895, they have a great, more casual, atmosphere and feature some of the greatest orchestras in the world. Most, but not all, concerts are in the Royal Albert Hall, London.

OK boys and girls I think I have a contender for 2012's AOS classical outing which I mentioned as an idea a couple of weeks ago :)

It's an absolutely tip-top Russian themed evening that will appeal to the seasoned pros and classical virgins amongst you, with crowd-pleasers from Tchaikovsky / Mussorgsky / Shostakovich at London's Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday October 16.

Full details here -

http://ticketing.southbankcentre.co.uk/find/music/classical/tickets/andrew-litton-conducts-the-royal-philharmonic-orchestra-66314

The idea will be to go to the concert and then have drinks / chat nearby afterwards.

I would be happy to book a block of tickets if people can Paypal me the cost of their ticket upfront. As I go to quite a lot of concerts I'm a bit of a cheapskate and normally get tickets in the circle but happy to go with the majority preference.

Do we have any takers??

I'll definitely go. As I prefer good front stalls seats, I prefer to buy my own tickets. Any idea of how well booked it is so far? Do we need to get our skates on?

Great stuff Martin!

Plenty of tickets left as they haven't been on sale long ...

I would also really encourage anyone who hasn't been to a classical concert to give this a go - the Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky are really easy to get into and won't have you running out of the hall in disgust

Got the tickets - you're right, lots of good seats left. I especially like the Shossy and look forward to this and meeting up with some AoS members :)

It's quite likely I will be there too - but it depends on whether my 'ladyfriend' will be able to join me.

Will confirm in a couple of days.

Nice one, Barry, it would be good to meet up again.

For those living in the North East, Brinkburn Music Festical will be upon us shortly http://www.brinkburnmusic.org/Brinkburn_Music_Festival/Home.html. Beautiful location. Only a few days; 6-8 July.

I've booked tickets for the Gabrieli Consort singing Bach St Matthew Passion on the Sunday and was sorely tempted by Stilo Antico doing something a little earlier.

Looking forward to seeing Nicola Benedetti in the flesh

Hope you get a good seat :eyebrows:

She is certainly a tidy bit of tackle but I was slightly underwhelmed by her fiddling ability last year in the Brahms Double Concerto at the Festival Hall.
The Bruch might be better suited to her though.

Really looking forward to seeing Benjamin Grosvenor playing Saint-Saens on Tuesday night, Prom 43. Delius & Tchaikovsky make up the supporting cast.

Anyone else promming it?

MartinT

Not that one, Julian. My next one is Prom 73 on 6th Sep.

Bruckner 9 - fab! Never heard it "live" ...

Shame to spoil it with some of that Beethoven fluff

I've got Rattle / Berlin Phil coming up on Aug 30 - can't wait!

MartinT
11-08-2012, 13:38
Heresy! The Beethoven 4th piano concerto is magnificent!
Yep - Haitink and the VPO too :)

You'll enjoy Rattle and the BPO, he really seems to have won them completely over now.

I meant to ask you Martin, how did you enjoy Sibelius 7?

I am a massive fan of Sibelius, especially the tone-poems, but couldn't really get into 7 when I heard it at the Barbican back in 2010 ...

MartinT

I'm afraid it rather washed over me, without leaving much of a mark. I far preferred the Strauss programming. Oh, and the obligatory new piece was horrible.

This concert is coming up soon - do we have anyone other than Martin T and myself up for it ??

Still plenty of tickets left for what is a very attractive programme IMO

And I don't just mean Natasha Paremski ... :eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows:

Yes I'm bringing my friend Quentin, who is my regular concert going partner ...

Surprised we couldn't get a few more punters!

Please no Beethoven Martin ...
I'm open-minded, as long as it's music I like ;)

MartinT

LOL! Let's see if we can find some late romantic period Mahler, Brucker, Richard Strauss or more Shostakovich, shall we?

We've mentioned the Durufle Requiem on vinyl before - would be great to hear it live! It must be quite rarely performed ...

http://ticketing.southbankcentre.co.uk/find/music/classical/tickets/royal-philharmonic-orchestra-performs-a-french-connection-66298

Can't go wrong with a spot of Poulenc either ...

MartinT
18-10-2012, 23:06
Ruth and I had been looking at that very same one!

I love the Durufle Requiem and I'm also partial to the Poulenc Gloria.

julesd68
25-10-2012, 08:42
Mr T - don't think that I can pass up the chance to hear the Durufle - are you going to book aswell?

Right - let's do it then!

25-10-2012, 10:27
Great stuff Martin!

It's worth adding that if you love the Faure Requiem (like wot I doz) you are pretty much sure to enjoy the Durufle as it is essentially inspired by the former ...

MartinT
25-10-2012, 10:35
Oh yes indeed, I adore the Duruflé Requiem. It's stunningly gorgeous and contemplative music. Which is your favourite recording?

Mine is the Robert Shaw / Atlanta SO on Telarc.

I don't have one, yet!

I have been looking for ZRG787 for a while but they are super-rare and quite expensive ... :(

MartinT
25-10-2012, 10:59
That looks like an Argo catalogue number.

25-10-2012, 11:14
Yes, and there is an even older recording - ZRG5363.

Been doing some digging around - think I am going to buy the Andrew Davis recording on CBS - let's hope the sound quality is better than their usual dismal efforts ...

Some interesting typos as a result of OCR in that article. That Davis recording sounds interesting. I have the Guest/St John's College recording mentioned and it's good, but not as good as the Shaw I mentioned earlier.

Evgeny Kissin playing Scriabin would be one for me.

Is it me or is the Proms programme for this year somewhat disappointing? What with being away for some of summer, I'm only going for one: Prom 67 Arvo Part / Britten / Berlioz / Saint Saens on 1st September.

If you want tickets, don't forget that sales online starts at 9:00 sharp tomorrow morning 11th May.

MartinT

Managed to get into the queue at position 942 which took about 40 mins to get to the booking page and have booked Prom 67. If anyone else goes to that Prom let me know and we could meet for a drink.

The other machine is still showing 3672 in the queue! I'll put it out of its misery now...

I wasn't blown away by the Proms offering this year either Martin.

I've only bought tickets for Prom 43 - late night Gesualdo & Taverner, with the Tallis Scholars doing their thing - should be sublime.

No longer forthcoming, the Leeds castle outdoor yesterday, helped by fabulous weather and 3 bottles of decent champagne, was a belter. OK, its really the Royal Philharmonic as the backing band for a series of entertainments, but the fireworks for the 1812 were the best ever - beautifully coreographed. The aerial flyovers - were awesome - Spit and a Hurricane flying close formation, close passes, and great approaches to the audience, and the Blades display team were stunning. Absolutely stunning.

Mrs S was as so often struggling a bit with a slightly shrill soprano (although I did suggest she get off her arse and show them how to do it if she thought she could, and she made her point fairly impressively for the few around us - pulling an army major, the shameless flirt, in the process). James Edwards for best tenor since Pavarotti?

Whilst it's not strictly 'upcoming' it could possibly be considered as such. Just wanted to recommend (whilst it's still available on iPlayer for 4 more days I think) the BBC4 Prom from the other night - Shostakovich 11 performed by the BBC Welsh who played out of their skins. A stunning performance, easily my favourite of the series so far. A beast of a symphony; moving, frightening and uplifting at the same time.

Prokofiev 2nd Violin Concerto too as a bonus. :)

Just noticed today - if you are a fan of early church music and The Tallis Scholars as I am, you will want to try and attend Peter Phillip's 60th birthday celebration concert at Cadogan Hall on 15 October.

http://www.cadoganhall.com/event/the-tallis-scholars-131015/

I saw them at the Proms a week or so ago singing Taverner and Gesualdo, and they were as immaculate as ever ...
