The smaller ones certainly used to thunder - the LP12 HATED them..

Dan you lucky thing! Have a chat with Stewart (Stewarten) he designed a lot of the IAS speakers. :)

Hi

Hoops yeah i contacted stu. he bought my dads old ones from him the only pair left of the range. stu is a top bloke and knows his stuff. try putting them in a flat with other hi-fi around is not ideal  but loving the horns at the monent spine tingling is the word.

How are you finding yours.?

IAS loudspeakers were produced over a number of years. We made a few models which all used a 1/4 wave back loaded horn system. We NEVER used complex crossovers, rather we built and designed the crossover to work with the very best drive units we could get hold of. We even used SERIES crossovers with very low roll of rates which impacted on the music very little. Although to the end of the IAS story we went to 12 dB per octave parallel xovers which were much easier to build. The stock was NOT BURNED when my partner Allen Willis died, the company was wound up correctly. So all stock was sold to local buyers usually at Southampton Uni.
The cabs you have are a pair of EARLY Cadnam Export. These were the top of our range of loudspeakers much much better than The Bealieu l/s. They had more bass extension, tighter bass definition, and a much more extended treble reproduction. The Bealieu was a flagship model which was surpassed by the rather large Double Bealieu which had a Volt B250, along with another bass driver, again a Volt 10 inch driver which had a HUGE magnet, these were placed in two horn tracks! We used an 8 inch Volt midrange as well as an Audax two-34 treble unit. These l/s were huge, about 5 foot tall about 25 inches deep and about 15 inches wide.

To recover the grilles all you need is some Polyester Dress Cloth, from your local haberdasher, if in doubt take one of the grilles with you, this should cost you no more than a fiver! You will also need a staple gun and some staples of no more than 1/2 inch in depth, grille covering was done just before the l/s were boxed up to be sent to the new owner.
We also used a measuring machine for all the l/s build to make sure they were built to spec. Then they were all listened to for about thirty hours or so to again make sure they had been built correctly.
Although IAS speaks are very efficient they all had an impedance of about 10 ohms or so so I would advise you to use an amp of at least 50 or 60 watts to get the best out of them.
All of our biggest cabs were developed to SOUND GREAT and were not as room dependent as most of our competition. I run my Beauliea on a 650 watt amp as well as the Ashurst. They do need loads of current to keep the bass tight.
S
ps if you ever need to shift these speaks on..................................they could return home!

Well you do surprise me, but I'll take your word for it & stus' :)

In comparison to the Beaulieu they look like drivers out of an Amstrad rack system, with a piezo horn & dome tweeter thrown in for good measure

As I say, they just don't look right

Well obviously I can't comment on that side of things :) Sorry, I really don't want it to seem as though I'm dissecting the things, it's just that the Beaulieus looked like high quality speakers, they were fitted with Volt drivers after all ;)

Where as I honestly can't remember any other speakers fitted with chromed dust domes other than Amstrad

It just doesn't sit right in my head, maybe I have got a problem? :facepull:
