View Full Version : Decent stable DC power supply?

Does anyone know of a decent DC power supply, between 6V and 14V (preferably the upper end) and no more than 5 amps? I want to try changing the supply to my DAC.
Also, would Regulated or Switch Mode be preferable?
Maplin and RS do some external multi-voltage switch-mode psu but my preference would be for a linear regulated supply either using a pre tracking regulator layout or one of ALW's fantastic super regulators...but that would mean a DIY project.
What DAC is it?

What DAC is it?
It's an Apogee Mini DAC (http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/minidac.php), I've been looking at Maplin and they sell some interesting bench power supplies but if I can find better then I'm interested. I don't particularly want to go down the DIY route as I'm relatively inexperienced in electronics and blowing a grands' worth of DAC is not in my interest right now, however if someone wanted to make one then I could furnish them with beer tokens.
I's stay away from SMPS.

Hmmm... <rubs chin>
Pocket money for Mikey alert! :)

The one you need is the Maplin one that is on sale for £20 from £35. It has been extensively tested on my DAC by numerous people over two years. If you can find better for the price, let me know.

Rob,
First of all does the dac take DC or AC. Chances are there is already PSU circuitry inside in order to obtain +5VDC for the digital circuits and +/-15VDC for the analog output circuit.
If this is the case, and I guess it is (you dont plug in 2 or more seperate wallwarts into it?) all the PSU wizardry in the world wont overcome the internal PSU circuitry unless you want to open the dac up and re design the circuits (which you already said you dont).
The best you can do is to supply the dac with the cleanest volts you can and the lowest output impedance. The benefits of clean voltage rails should be obvious, the low OP impendance is needed to avoid actually causing more problems than you are trying to solve.
The main issue first is whether you need a DC or AC supply
One of these ready assembled items would probably do..

Could perhaps save a bit of dosh by building from scratch, but not much.

Talk to Anthony. You are AOS admin after all. He built me such a linear super regulated device for my Bel Canto CD player.

This is the one you mean Stan http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48517
I use it myself, and it does the job well.
Chris:)
