ALBUM CLUB - Rules of Engagement

Edit: By popular demand, here are the "rules" and list previously detailed in "post #87"

================================================== ================================================== ================================================== ===

Hi everyone, had a think and a few more discussions, and basically taking all the above into account, this is how Album Club will work to start with. (We will review it on an ongoing basis, and make any changes as needed, after consultation of course! Please use this thread for any further suggestions.)

We already have a list running of the people who want to be in the "hot seat" - I'll add any more and monitor it to make sure the right person gets the choice the next week. If you want to be added, either PM me, or post in this thread.

Here's the running order: (Excuse the use of forum names not real names but makes it much easier!)

When it is your turn, you have the choice of nominating either a "classic" album, or something new that you think everyone else should hear.

The album should be available for free (legal) listening on services such as Spotify (preferably) or else another link should be provided (i.e. Grooveshark or similar.) If all else fails, You Tube clips could be an alternative.

When it is your turn to nominate an album, please do so on a Tuesday - start a new Thread in the Music area of the forum - and please follow this convention for the Thread title: Album Club: 09.08.2011: Name of Artist - Title of Album (DATE) and include a link to the Spotify album (or other link if not available on Spotify) and a brief outline of the album, and if you like, why you have chosen it. Please can you also include a picture of the album art. (If possible keep to 300 x 300 pixels - a link to the Amazon image is probably the easiest way.) A note of the formats available would be good too. If available, a link to the Wikipedia page for the album would be a good idea:

By way of an example:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Album Club: 01.01.2011: The Wombles - Remember You're a Womble (1974)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51fqEF%2BgtTL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Spotify Link: http://open.spotify.com/track/6XFVwS5IJlFdmGeterE8os

Wikipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remember_You%27re_A_Womble

Second album from the genius that is Mike Batt, the musical styles include pop, rock, classical and surf rock in the style of (but better than) the Beach Boys. Peaked at number 18 in the UK chart, which was harsh I felt. The band where notable in wearing "Womble" costumes to protect their identity, and ensure they didn't get recognised - a trick followed years later by Slipknot. The Wombles are currently seeing a resurgence in popularity having been adopted as the mascot of the groups of citizens cleaning up after the UK riots.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone else on the forum (whether they are on the list of nominees or not) is then invited and indeed encouraged to listen to the album, and post their thoughts on it. It would be nice if before the next week's nomination the originator of the current one could offer any further thoughts and any further listening suggestion, either from the same artist, or similar albums.

If anyone has any further questions or queries, then please shout. Otherwise, "let's do this!"

And remember everyone - the first rule of Album Club - everyone talks about Album Club!

Simon has suggested this

Out of interest and hopefully Marco won't mind me pointing to another forum and he can remove this if it's a problem but over on the Wigwam one of the guys runs a Wammers Album Club. Each week a classic album is selected and on Tuesday all who are interested listen to the album and comment on it - both good and bad. It's a very interesting thread and even though musically most of it doesn't appeal to me even I've joined in.
Well How about us starting this off by coming up with a list of albums to start off with and then go for the most popluar choice first.
For myself I would like to open it up to not only classic albums but albums people really love
One of my favourites is Jeff Buckley Grace and know some hear really like others dislike so might be a good one to start off with
I will add a few other suggestions tonight
We could also add a spotify link for those that do not have the album so they can listen and perhaps get into some new music

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++

Just to let everyone know the album club has its own section so that people can easily refer to all the albums that has been up for nomination
http://theartofsound.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=45
In the future if having a album to share please put it in this section

Grace will do for me for the first one :)

How about doing this on a weekly basis. May be have a couple of people come up with a list, set up a poll on the Friday with the top choice being listening choice for the following week.

I also suggest we do 2 albums, a classic one and an alternative one from a different genre - say jazz, classical, punk, indie, metal or whatever.

allows us to re-assess a classic album AND open up something new to broaden the horizons as well ???????

Perhaps we could do a classic one week and alternative the next; it keeps it nice and simple
I think always healthy to discover new music but not sure if Tims (GreatGig)bank balance would agree Lol

I’m all for the broadening the horizons bit ;)
Here’s my nomination.

yep like it.

start a thread on the Monday asking for a particular genre or just some albums. Put them in a poll on the Friday and loow the weekend voting and then listen to the most popular the following week with people recording their views on it.

It's a great idea.

Try 'Let England Shake' by PJ Harvey, 'Smart Flesh' by The Low Anthem or 'Bon Iver' by Bon Iver... and let anyone who says no-one makes good music anymore hang their head in shame.

Good choices Alan, and possibly Fleet Foxes 'Helplessness Blues', & Explosions in the Sky 'Take Care, Take Care, Take Care', if we're keeping it to 2011 :)

griffo104
03-08-2011, 10:41
ok so far we have

Grace - Jeff Buckley Grace
Unvisible - Medeski, Martin and Wood
Let England Shake - PJ Harvey
Smart Flesh - The Low Anthem
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Helplessness Blues - Fleet Foxes
Take Care, Take Care, Take Care - Explosions in the Sky

I'm already happy with some of those suggestions so not going to put one in myself.

I'm sure there's probably a limit to the number of options on a poll so I'll set one up tomorrow (I'm out Friday so will do it early to see how we get going on it) - for now let's say 10 albums on the weekly poll.

People can update this thread until then with choices and if we go over 10 I'll drop a couple id people pmake more than one suggestion to make way for them.

Ok we see how the voting goes for the weekend I think for the first we should start out with a classic album and then alternate between classic and something where we discover something new each other week
I will select the most popular classic choice this Sunday
If people suggest albums that are a bit more obscure make sure we have some way of listening to them so people can join in Spotify works well for this

Sounds good fun ... but if the album choices are open to complete diversity then not a lot of people will have heard of the obscure stuff ... and I for one will not go out and buy something I have never heard and of a genre of music I do not like ... just to write in and say why I may not like it ... maybe that is why is better to stick to the Classics ...

I like the idea and will go with the flow on which album goes first. I'll be happy to give it a good listen and, even if I don't have it and must use Spotify, I can stream it through the 'big rig'.

Make a susggestion for a classic. the plan is to mix it so classics one week, alternative the week after.

you may not have the alternative album that wins but hopefully people will comment on the thread - both positive and negative, hopefully add links, as John mentions, and maybe you decide to go out try something new.

You can still vote for an alternative choice if one takes your fancy but you don't own it and then wait to see what comments are made. If you live locally to an AoS member maybe get together and have a listen

This all about the music :lolsign:

Could we use this thread for the suggestions & votes and start a new thread for each album, titled Album Club: Blah? That way, each album would be more easily searchable.

My suggestion for a classic -
Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix

For alternative
War Stories - Unkle

Yep that's the plan. Suggestions here on this thread, new thread for the weekly poll and then a new thread for the winning album itself - for comments.

Very religiously so ;)

Psychedelia emerged in the mid 60's & as with Progressive, advance at a quick rate. By late 60's/Early 70's psychedelia naturally made way to the Progressive movement which in itself didnt last too long before it self decructed (you only have to listern to most the crap within 1973), this is quite evident. a clue being most the early bands within the Progressive movement were well gone before then. How on earth can that same progressive movement still exist?? Sorry but it's totally something else.

It wasnt solely the music as a form back then, musicians mindset had a lot to do with it, society at the time & the happening things.. everything was closely related. Sorry man it's all finished.

Another idea from The Grand Wazzo
Instead of using the v oting mechanism different members can take turns to nominate an album, one week it can be classic the next an album to recommend but also offer up for critical feedback.
If we do go this way then it be easy to cover for specialist taste quite easy

The difficulty with classical is that there are so many different versions that we will need to make sure everyone listens to the same one, or else the follow-up discussion about the album is going to be pretty meaningless.

Imagine if the album was Elgar's 'Cello Concerto and some listened to the du Pré version, some to the Tortelier version and some to Casals etc

Agreed, but it can be done. There are great recordings of every piece and we could use the Penguin highest rated one, or more pragmatically select from one that is on Spotify to attain the greatest audience.

Maybe we need to clear up what the objective of the 'Album Club' is - I thought I understood, but now I'm not too sure :doh:

Is it

Attempt to introduce members to new music that they probably haven't heard before, or
Suggest we all listen to a well-known album, respecting the music - even if it isn't necessarily your cup of tea - by listening critically to the work in full without distractions and then to have a free-flowing discussion about all aspects of the album

I had assumed it was the latter, but from some of the suggestions, maybe not.

Alex_UK
04-08-2011, 10:00
Hi Keith - yes, I think it is getting a little confusing - and I don't want to be "judge and jury" on which approach - though I too saw the original intention as being a "classic" (your option 2) - though I can understand and appreciate the desire to include new music as well. I'm tempted to say that it is up to the individual who is in the "hot seat" each week to decide which album they would like to present - but the concern there is we end up with all of one and not the other. This is one of the aspects of the chaos that needs organising! Happy to go with the most popular opinion - may have to set up a poll on this (and other) issues once everyone has given us their "noodlings" :)

I'm happy with this. So on Monday I would setup the album club thread album of the week and recommend my Classic album, then the following week the next person does the same. When it comes back round to my turn I can select a personal recommendation which could something new or just another classic.

I like it.

I think critical feedback should be done for ALL albums - my knowledge of the classics is pretty woeful so I's enjoy reading about why or why not people like an album

I agree, I like the hot seat approach a lot. Hopefully we can have discussions on classics and why they are a classic and also on the way hopefully pick up some new music.

Rules should be that the album is available to all so maybe through Spotify.

I think it's good, on a hifi forum, to enjoy and understand the music we love. Without this there's little point of the hifi.

The point of the album of the week is that we all listen to it and comment, both good and bad.

I like the idea of classics but also new music as at some point some of the new stuff may be the future classics that the next generation talk about.

Thanks Simon - I think to a degree we will have to "suck it and see" but my inclination is to go this route to start with, and review it after a few weeks if it isn't working out. I agree that making sure it is available on Spotify is essential really - we don't want to force people to buy an album they may end up hating, and it would also cause delays whilst people acquired the disc - and especially now Spotify is available in the US I think most people should have access to it. It is also worth noting that some other sites will have the albums available free too, if people don't have Spotify access (www.we7.com (http://www.we7.com)for instance.)

Should be fun! :)

griffo104
04-08-2011, 10:37
I think if we do the hot seat approach, then we have a sticky with the list of members.

Each week the next one recommends an album

All can listen to the album and join in the discussion - they don't need to be a member, so anyone can come along one week and decide to join in on the listening. This means that you don't have to join in each week.

It would be nice if people who hated certain types of music gave it a try and documented why they still displike it or whether they had enjoyed it.

If someone wants to join in on the selection process they PM the music forum mod who adds them to the list in the sticky.

I had assumed it was the latter, but from some of the suggestions, maybe not.

Keith, originally I saw as two separate things going on at the same time.

One classic album of the week and one 'new' album of the week. So two individual threads.

As a music lover I need to be educated in the classics but also want to hear new stuff that other people may love but I'm completely unaware of.

In my mind if you listen to something like Pentangle or Fairport Convention you may also love a band like Espers who have a modern take on the more folky sound.

Espers II is certainly an album I would recommend as a modern new album and I think a lot of people on here would enjoy it but probably completely unaware of it. Certainly I've taken it on many a bake off and it's proved very popular with people who have no idea about the band.

So in my mind it was an attempt to do both - and discuss both as well.

So many people put on what they are listening to but it's a good idea, I think, to also share this around with an album or two a week and chat about it, not just post what you've listened to.

My critical point on Alan's CAS comments in the hifi chioce thread was that more people need to hear new music on hifis and not just the classic. We need to diversify and spread :lolsign:

This is related to one of the suggestions I made offline to the other mods. I think that the person who proposes the album might be given an opportunity to offer suggestions for 'further listening' after the main discussion has finished - of course other folks could chime in too.

The difficulty with classical is that there are so many different versions that we will need to make sure everyone listens to the same one, or else the follow-up discussion about the album is going to be pretty meaningless.
So we'd be talking about the musical performance and recording more than talking about the piece of music itself? Could we not be able to discuss the passion and emotional power of, for example, how Beethoven's Symphony no. 6 makes us feel regardless of what orchestra recorded it?

griffo104

You could always start off discussing the work itself and then move on to favourite/worst performances.

I'm sure I've got a least a couple of Beethoven 6s but know which one I always return to.

Maybe something for the classical guys could be but in the classical forum rather than the main music forum here.

On a more serious note, with Marks help I’ve added some exceptional and unusual music to my collection, stuff I just wouldn’t have come across in my normal pop lust searchings ;)
 I'll stick to Spotify John ;)

Nice to know that you have & now do enjoy some more obscure stuff John, thanks for mentioning it fella - you have put a smile on my face ;)

A suggestion for Album Club - after listening to the week's selection and forming an opinion, use the "Rate thread" facility for that album's thread to rate the album from 1 star to 5 stars. Then after a week, maybe Alex could record the final rating against the album on the summary post - http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=241439&postcount=87 ?

Yes, a great idea - however when I revisit the pages, it says I already have... Please feel free to have a try, though, and report back:

Just to let you know, as well as keeping the list in post #87 (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=241439&postcount=87) updated, I will also be maintaining a Spotify playlist with all of the weekly albums, in chronological order - if you haven't already seen it, then have a look at the Art of Sound Spotify Page (http://open.spotify.com/user/theartofsound) - the Album Club playlist is currently at the end of the page. :)

Yeah, it's all pointing to a dedicated Album Club area isn't it?

Let's see if we can keep it going for more than a few months before we think about that.....you never know, in a couple of weeks time we might all have converted to pre-'73 prog, played only by people who wore red socks on Thursdays and ate artichokes on Tuesdays. By then it'll all be redundant because we'll all like the same stuff & there won't be any need for discussion about music at all.

André

You have to understand that sometimes your posts, written in haste and without carefull thought, can be read before you have second thoughts and delete them (certainly the Moderators, with their superhuman powers, can read all posts, deleted or not).

Try to remember that before you post again. That way these sort of 'awkward' situations might be avoided.

Thanks for the summary in the specific thread, Martin.

I made this comment there, but worth repeating in this discussion thread I feel - "Album Club (which) has been a fantastic addition to AoS in my opinion. Long may it continue, and thanks to everyone who has taken part so far either as a listener or in the hot-seat.

The only thing I would ask moving forward is that no matter how much you may dislike the weekly selection, please can everyone try to remain respectful of other's tastes in music, and also to the musicians themselves? I hope that doesn't come across as too patronising - no problem with anyone not liking anything - but we're all different, and the world (especially music!) would be a very dull place if everyone liked the same thing."

I think on reflection if I were to have another go at it I would adopt a different set of criteria for my 'album club' selection.

I wanted to use something from 2011, which was fine, but I decided on my favourite of the year, which happened to be the 'King of Limbs'. I think the problem with my selection was that it was a high profile album/band. Most people here are pretty avid music fans (stating the bleeding obvious ), and will already have drawn their own conclusions about the album/band, just because Will says it's good is hardly going to change things...;)

The same can be said of the other selections, 'Dire Straits', 'Judie Tzuke', 'Fairport Convention' etc., they're not exactly obscure, and if I wasn't compelled to buy them over the last 35 years or so, I'm not likely to change my opinion very much now. Or if I do have them then I'm probably a fan already.

The one that worked for me was John/Welder's choice, which was an obscure (to me) album, so that's probably the way I'd go for my next selection...if I were to get the opportunity...:eyebrows:

MartinT
28-09-2011, 11:58
It'll cycle back round again, Will. I think that many of us went for something iconic and a quick hit. In future turns we will probably have more obscure choices, too. The only issue with that is it's nice if it at least exists on Spotify so that the widest audience can evaluate it.

Indeed Martin, that has to be the base criteria...:)

My strategy is totally different and I have 4 albums in the pipeline for my turn, all are new (ish) releases from relatively unknown artists. I expect most won't be liked, but my point is to try an introduce something new that may be a pleasant surprise to some ..... of course it could fail miserably, but what the heck

Kettering...isn't that the pattern left on one's ar5e after spending too long in a wicker chair ? ;)

It's 'give an old joke a home' week...:)

Ursus262 (Dave) has his PM's switched off - and hasn't logged on for 10 days - Dave - if you're reading this, it's your turn in the Album Club Hot Seat tomorrow!

If not, looks like I'll have to make a decision quickly and move up the list as I'm next after Dave!

OK, nothing heard from Dave (ursus262) so I'll be swapping places with him, my choice later (when I've made it!)

I was really tempted to go with something VERY pop - but I reined myself in at the last minute...

Anyway, can I remind Andre that it would be great if you can summarise your week in the hot-seat, and the reactions - and perhaps recommend some further listening? :)

As we've had a few "no-shows" I've updated the list in post #87 (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=241439&postcount=87) to include the date - if you are down to be in the hot-seat please let me know if you aren't able to make your week asap so I can juggle the rota. Many thanks. :)

So, I have finally managed to get Spotify working under Mint Linux using 'PlayOnLinux' which is a bit like WINE. The only drawback is that I have a free account I have had for years, and you are only allowed to listen to each track 5 times. No matter, I may in future upgrade and it is fine for the time being for listening to albums recommended on here and for getting the links I need when it is my turn. For anyone else using Linux (in my case Mint) here is a link to a page explaining how to do it...

Still not heard from Ursus262 (Dave) who should be up tomorrow, which leaves us with the option of swapping with either Chris - The Grand Wazoo - Dean - SCIDB - or Tim - erm, Tim ;) - not sure if Chris is about at the mo - would you be up for it tomorrow, Dean or Tim? :)

Judging by the numbers voting and commenting each week interest is waning. It looks like putting forward the more obscure titles is putting people of contributing. On the other hand suggesting something well known inspires high praise and vitriolic damnation in equal and ample measures. More Dire Straits sir ?

I've not had the chance to listen to the whole album yet. It's the first time for me, but work must take priority. I must admit I had no previous knowledge of Big Star.

Hi Alex, not sure when the next free spot is but can you give me a good to go date please? ;)

Alex_UK

Hi Mark,

There's a clue in post #1, for anyone that would like to know when their week is. ;)

Reid Malenfant - Week 15: 15.11.2011

All joking aside, I no longer intend on juggling weeks around for "no shows" - Ursus262 is up next week, but hasn't been on in over a month and not accepting PMs - trouble is, if we swap him around (again) or delete him it potentially knocks out the rota, and people could quite reasonably be planning a special if their week falls at Christmas, for instance.

So, we will be introducing a substitute system - which may also give you all the opportunity to nominate something completely off the wall (if you like Michael Jackson!) or perhaps a little leftfield (if you like... I'm sure you get the idea! :eyebrows:)

How the subs bench will work is that I would like anyone that fancies entering my lottery to PM me with their reserve album choice, and this will then be stored on the subs list, in chronological order with a corresponding number. When we have a "spare" week, I will fire up ERNIE, tickle Lancelot's balls or whatever, and whichever album comes out will be the winner. (Only one entry per household, terms and conditions apply, your home may be at risk if you go out and leave your windows open, etc. etc. :) )

So, PM me your lottery entries, and subject to ursus262 not making it next week, the first draw will take place next Monday night. (I will give whoever nominated the album the opportunity to "introduce" the album like a normal week, but if for any reason they are not around then I or one of the admin team will do it for you to save a week getting missed.)

Good luck - it could be you!

I reckon i might be able to come up with a reserve album, hell, there are enough to choose from ;)

PM's only mind - part of the fun of Album Club is not knowing what will be up next.

...........just watch, we'll get 23 nominations for Dark Side of the Moon!!!

Most here can count to ten and some will be able to manage fractions i dare say even after a few drinks ;)

If folks don't mind adding 10 options instead of 5, then fine by me. I also really liked Chris's (TGW) "annotation" last week, so let's get creative!

PS - a 50% chance of winning next week's lottery, at the moment... :)

Reid Malenfant

You'll have to check that the permissions have been set on VBulletin on this forum so that 10 options can be selected ;)

It isn't always the case I can assure you
