FYI

Not sure if this has appeared anywhere else on AoS ...

James started a Wigwam thread yesterday about a possible (actually pretty damn certain, I think & hope!) show for next year.

Yep - without doubt the AoS room this year was one of the best sounds at the show.

I think the Scalford Show is one of the best things to happen to UK hifi scene for many a year. (What a shame that Meridian Man's 2nd post on AoS was a downer. :()

I've exhibited at all 3 previous shows and it is one of the highlights of my year! A huge amount of fun. I'll be sharing with a room with a Wammer in 2012 and he'll be bringing his big KEF 107/2 Special Edition speakers. I'll be taking my vinyl rig and anything else that takes our fancy.

Eeee - I can't wait! :)

Ho hum

Hi Rob, why the "ho hum"?

Marco.

Effem
16-07-2011, 10:23
Only guessing here Marco but I think it's the distance between where Rob is located and show which might explain the response he has given. Maybe he should explore the possibility of organising something local to where he is?

I haven't been to one yet despite really wanting to go each year, but the old bank balance he say "No" :(

Marco
16-07-2011, 10:25
You could well be right, Frank, but that's the problem with shallow two-word responses: the meaning behind them is not always clear, and so can be very easily misconstrued! ;)

Marco.

MartinT

I'll be going this time.

Marco
16-07-2011, 10:46
Indeed you will - most of your kit will be getting used! ;)

Can you not share a ride with someone else from the Deep Southwest? Maybe help out with their room, if they are exhibiting?

It would be great to see you there, Frank! :)

MartinT
16-07-2011, 11:04
I'll have one seat going if you can get to Basingstoke, Frank. It'll be the day before, but as Jerry says you could help out.

Marco
16-07-2011, 11:08
Will you be bringing the Celestions, Marco?

No, I'm expecting you to pop the Ushers on your roof rack and take them on a trip to the countryside... :eyebrows:

Yup, the Celests, the Mana supports for them, and my Techy, are all that I'll be bringing next year. The rest is up to others. I'm looking forward to hearing top-notch solid-state kit at the heart of our system next year

Marco.

jandl100
16-07-2011, 11:10
That Wigwam thread is now closed.

James has got fed up with all and sundry trying to organise the thing by online committee! :D

Looks like he got a sufficiently positive response to get on with discussions with the hotel and setting up the real organising group.
Great stuff. :yay:

MartinT
16-07-2011, 11:11
Ok, I'll bring:

Technics deck complete
Choir SUT-H7
Whest PS.30R phono amp
Pass Labs XP-20 preamp
Chord SPM-1200E power amp
PS Audio PPP to power it all
Cables & stuff

You supply the speakers and we've got a system :)

Marco
16-07-2011, 11:14
Sounds good! We'll also have Nick's SUPERB Techy reel-to-reel as another quality source, and I'm sure that Steve Toy will want to bring his excellent Eikos CDP (after it's been repaired).

Anyone else wanting to supply kit for the AoS system is very welcome to do so

Hopefully Neil will drag his ass from Belfast next year too, and be part of the team, and forgo attending one of the trade events instead if necessary ;)

Marco.

Not yet decided - I am sure that will be agreed with the hotel over the next week or so. Early March probably, is my guess, like this year.

Hi Rob, why the "ho hum"?

Marco.

Firstly, yes it's the distance/location thing and i don't have the money to go.

Secondly, aos, pfm, ww, will be talking nonstop for the next few months about it and even though it will be great! its not so great reading about it every where when your not involved in it or going to it.

The only thing of interest to me is to see some photos from it.

I wish I could take a room just as an enthusiast, but it would be impossible, so I will be suitably jealous.

Whittlebury (trade show) will struggle even doing a show this year, where as Scalford (user show) will be full of users systems and listeners.

I know of one Hi-End Hi-Fi retailer who is now buying up classic old and not so old hi-fi gear and sticking it in storage. Refurb, tweak and re-sell could well become a business model in the future. Small companies like Dominic Harper setting up for tweaking and refurbing, in his case old turntables arms and cartridges - the new industry is on the way.

Well it's kind of in the middle really, which makes sense I guess. As much as it would be nice to have it in Brighton, that's a long way for most folk. I also reckon if you told folk in Melton Mowbray they were northerners, they might look at you a bit queer like ;)

And they have these there too . . .

No, but anywhere that makes it easier for people to get direct without being forced to stay over..Sunday makes it even worse performance with public transport.

Yes agree. You would be hard pushed to find a more difficult location to reach by train/bus than Scalford. And only crazy or desperate people attempt to use public transport on a Sunday.

I have to agree with Andr'e here, never been to Scalford but I do know Melton Mowbray and as beautiful as it is, it's hardly a hub for anything

EDIT: We must have been typing that at the same time Martin!

Yes it's a beautiful part of the world I used to live out that way - I think I've had a drink in every pub in the Vale of Belvois! But it is damned awkward for those without motors - what was the paying visitor turnout last year? I'm sure it could be at least doubled with a city-centre location.

Maybe we could arrange a smaller AOS led version at another time in the year? - I can get a hotel cheap in Stoke...1 hr 20 from Euston on the train.:)

17-07-2011, 12:27
Surely some sort of car share could be organised between folk.

stupinder
17-07-2011, 12:33
I live in france and managed to get there last year with the help of ryan Air and hitching a lift with one of the guys going to the event. Will be hopefully going next year and there MAY be room for a couple of folk in the landy depending on what kit I take.

Fair enough andre.
My fault for presuming everyone drove.

I'am guessing the big hotels in birmingham for example cost a fortune so i suppose any on the outskirts are going to be awkard for public transport.

I'll be going again, but not showing unless I get some new kit, no point showing the same gear again.

So i'll have space for two in the car down from Sheffield if anyone wants a car share.

If you missed the pics from the last show I'll upload mine to my Flickr account later today.

Here's some shots from Andrew P's turntable bakeoff yesterday.

I am going and am sharing a room with a friend of mine. We hope to show two entirely different active systems. Both home built.
But to attain the sound quality of the AOS room last year will be difficult.
We will have a variety of turntables which will include, Garrard 401/ Hadcock/ Cartridgeman Classic, 401 in a modded SME plinth with a Cartridgeman air-beam parallel tracking arm/London Reference cart. A Roksan and a unipivot/ Contrapunkt B.
Not really decided on the rest of the kit yet but have been toying with taking a fully tricked up Technics SL1210/Origin Live Silver...............cart hmmmmmmmmmmm.

John is correct in that you need to PM mod Mark 'Browellm' for rights to edit the spreadsheet. Again John is correct that the room rates they're negotiating on is the price of a bedroom for the Saturday overnight stay. Prices for this years stay were about £65 per room IIRC. That was both single & double occupancy i.e. cheaper to share a room, but must be sorted out at the booking stage.

The rooms for displaying have been free in the past years, for a bedroom size room & a charge of about £30 is only on the bigger conference size rooms, these are limited & are allocated on the size of kit to be displayed. So unless you need a big room I doubt you'll get one, but at least the small rooms were free. I expect the show to be over subscribed this year & preference to display may well be given to those that haven't displayed before to some extent.

The Curry this year cost £20 a head. That included a set meal with a selection of starters & main courses (plenty to eat) & your first drink. Drinks after that were paid on top. Also included was a mini bus to ferry people to & back from the curry house to Scalford Hall. The meal was good & the evening was great.

The 66s will be making another appearance in our system, along with the G800 (I simply have to let folk hear how good this cartridge sounds, fitted with one of Dom's superb styli), not to mention that Nick will be bringing some sexy reel-to-reel tape decks with him. And that's just in our system.... :)

I expect there will be a few disappointed people as last time I looked at the spreadsheet there was 63 names for exhibiting & only 50 rooms to be used. The spreadsheet is still open to be added to until the end of December too, so more names could yet be added.

There's some lovely kit on the spreadsheet & I don't envy who ever ends up with the job of selecting who does & who doesn't get to exhibit in 2012. Whoever makes the cut there should be a nice selection of different kit to hear!

Hi Andre,

Why don't you bring some of your own music down. Most people would be happy to play some of it. I have played various people's tunes on my systems at the last 3 shows.

There has been and be a mix of equipment from current to vintage. For example, a number of Tannoy speakers will be there having a shoot off. That is if everything goes to plan.

Just because it is vintage doesn't mean it is better.

Hi John,

I agree. Having been one of the pioneering exhibitors, it was a step into the unknown. But it was good meet fellow hifi & music buffs, good to put names to faces, meet up with old friends, to hear new or different music, to see & hear a wide range of old & new equipment, etc.

It is hard work but very enjoyable.

I have spare speakers and will be picking up some more ones at the weekend. I've got a Leak Delta 70 that cost me £7 and a Luxman turntable that set me back £55 if that's of use.
Just spoke with Dave. Have a chat with him and we'll come up with a cunning plan.

I have a room this year, And if anyone needs help with getting stuff from their cars etc, let me know. I will be there from mid-day on Saturday and only have a small system so not much to set up.

Hi,

It seems that AOS is now 2nd reserve on the subs bench.

Hi Dean,

Thanks for the update, mate. Unfortunately, it means nothing if we can't get the room that WE would like, which would have to be big and on or near the ground floor...

If that ends up being the case, then we'll be in, but if not, it'll be a no-no :)

Marco.

I would say that this now seems unlikely.

Yup, Mark, I agree, which is why I doubt that there will an AoS room as such this year.

We certainly won't just be accepting any old room which doesn't suit our needs... What we wanted was the room we were in last year, but we understand that other people who haven't exhibited before should be given a chance.

Anyway, bits of the kit we intended to exhibit as full system will be in John's room (the music room mod here), so I'm sure that'll be fun! :)

Marco.

Marco

I am currently planning to share a van or large car with John up to Scalford and have a room which I believe is the same one OB1 had last year. Although I am not the most active member I may be able to host some stuff as well if that interests you or others.

I plan to have the following

Orbe SE with Audiomods VTA arm and Lyra Delos
Whest PS30R
Either a S&B based TVC or new Eastern Electric Avant Pre
Trichord Pulsar Dac with Toshiba 9000dvd as transport and possibly Mac Mini computer source.
And active Adam Audio Compact Classics.

Hi Paul,

Nice one. That's much appreciated and we may well take you up on that. Any idea how big your room is? :)

If I remember rightly, I think that OB1's room last year was just along from ours...

Hi Marco

If the room numbering hasn't changed and it is the one OB1 had its one of the standard sized rooms so wouldn't take anything too large. Somehow OB1 had to large floor standing Sonus Fabers in their but I think that pushed it. Anyway happy to discuss when everyones room allocations have firmed up. You never know you might get something come through perhaps even better than last time.

Absolutely :)

Don't forget the C.A.C room chaps, should be good for a laugh, and hopefully open a few eyes as to what's possible on a very limited budget

I had a £55 system there last year and most people were quite positive about it. There was one bloke that popped by to tell me how much he hated Linn speakers, but thankfully he didn't stay long.
If the room allocation stays as it is Synsei and I should be next door to the cac room.

Does anyone know the size of the C.A.C. Room - "2F Fernie Room" - which being on the 2nd floor isn't going to be ideal for a room where the intention is that lots of people bring a complete system with them... Still, I'm sure we'll manage! :)

It's the one that Serge from the Wam had last year. Should be plenty big enough for a few systems.

Excellent - we can even use the whiteboard for noting systems etc. :) Best I get over to the CAC thread pretty sharpish and recap the "rules" etc.

I'm still trying to figure out if I can get my cac system there as well as my main system.
I'm currently listening to a pair of Goodmans Magnum K2's obtained for the princely sum of £0. And have a Leak Delta 70 that was picked up for less than £7.

As Chris (The Grand Wazoo) would say, that is a Cheap As Crisps system, never mind chips! (I bet the Magnum K2s are fab - I've thought about taking a punt on those a few times...)

Maybe I should try and find a source for £3.
I got 2 pairs of Magnums for nowt. Tweeter dead in one of them. Plan to use a pair of 12" woofers in a long term diy project. Sort of on the side of my SP-10 plinth and cdp upgrade projects. And the cable project, and the arm rewire project.........

Yep - the Fernie is a very good room for you, Alex.

But it's probably worth asking in advance for more tables as you are planning for a few systems to be there.

Indeed, Mark - give us a shout and we'll arrive, mob-handed! :eyebrows:

Incidentally, just out of curiosity, what's the postion of AoS on the subs bench now? Not that it'll likely mean much, as I doubt we'd get the room we would need, but I'm just curious!
