We had a nice day out today, first stop Goathland, i'm sure you've all seen the TV Programme which was filmed there. It's only a few miles from Whitby, on from Whitby then, onto Scarbrough & finaly to Filey before heading off back home.. A nice day but rained on & off most of it..Beats staying indoors.

A Couple shots of Scarbrough at the bottom which at that point my camera battery decided to die.. :(

As you can see i can't use a camera for trying :lolsign:

Great pics, Andre - I almost feel like I was there with you! :)

Love the Ford Anglia Police car.... Can you imagine that being able to catch any 'baddies'? :eyebrows: It's a bit similar to the Moggie Minors the Police used to use - how quaint!

And the pics of the trains were cool, too.......

But, as I have a fetish for old petrol pumps, my favourite pic is this:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a222/LIVING-SIN/009-1.jpg

Awesome! If you can find a pic of one of the old Shell petrol ones (you know the ones I mean?), with the glass shell on top that lights up at night, let me know!

Awesome. I loved it when petrol stations were full of that stuff! Remember when Lyons Maid ice-cream signs looked like that (the Walls ones were cool, too!) :)

There's only a later 60's Shell pump outside the garage.

My late father had one of those blue Anglias!

Looks nice but I am not sure I would like to live in a 'film set' all a bit false if quaint.

Good pics Andre.

I love old advertising signs, but ice-cream has always interested me rather more than fags! :eyebrows:

Like this old Walls ice-cream sign, which used to adorn 'tuck shops' in parks when I was a kid, during the scorching summers we use to have in the 70s:

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4788/kgrhqeokjue3w8r59bociw7.jpg (http://img11.imageshack.us/i/kgrhqeokjue3w8r59bociw7.jpg/)

I used to love their 'Midnight Mint' choc-ices, and the plain 'yellowy' ice-cream they sold in blocks, which fitted inside a rectangular slot inside a cone - wonderful! Dunno if anyone remembers those?

I have lovely memories as a kid of being out with my mum and dad for a drive in the country, then sometimes stopping at a petrol station that had those old Shell pumps, and that sold Walls ice-cream (with a sign like the above outside the shop), getting an ice-cream, and my dad getting some Green Shield stamps, after the attendant had filled up the car with petrol (leaded 4-star of course then)...

Happy days!

I recall there were many of those little service stations in North Wales. Are they really all gone?

Regarding ice cream, I remember if the ice cream van came around we would beg my mum or my nan for an ice cream but they would refuse saying 'you don't want to eat the ice-cream from those vans - they make it in a big tub in the back yard and insects and slugs get into it' Just to put us off wanting it -the tight fisted mares!

A pal of mine recalled that his nan used to tell him that if the van was playing music that meant it had run out of ice cream!

This was back in the 70s, of course, long before lying to your kids became 'wrong':lolsign:

Not sure, mate (more than likely), but remember I grew up in Glasgow in Scotland, so I'm referring to trips we used to go up to The Trossachs, and around Aberfoyle, Drymen, Callander, etc (you can look up those names to see where I'm talking about, if you want) - absolutely stunning scenery up there, and there were lots of those little petrol stations, dotted about all over the place! :)

I particularly enjoyed it when it just started to get dark, and as you approached the petrol station, driving along remote country roads, you could see the Shell lamp-signs on the petrol pumps glowing in the early-evening sky, illuminating an otherwise gloomy looking, often run-down, forecourt...

In those days, all you had was a wee man in a wooden hut-type shop, which had a few bits and pieces in it, not the soulless, gaudy and brightly-lit 'mini-supermarkets' which adorn filling stations these days

I prefer the charm of the way things used to be, in the days when life was less 'hustle and bustle'. In many ways, in that respect, I'm like Andre.

Marco.

P.S Feck political correctness!! ;)

I always get grumpy this time of year & alway go visit places like that. Each year i get older i'm getting further away from the good times i had when i was a kid, of course i didnt realise back then that i was surrounded wiith quality & a great era to live in! these days i think the way the country is run & the sheer greed of people & tackiness of virtually everything product you use is a crying shame.

I HATE GETTING OLDER, theres noting in life these days that makes me as happy as i was when i was a kid.

Hi Shaun
Nice area you live in, always liked it around there..

I was thinking about getting one of those Whitby day rover tickets to go on one of the Pickering - goathland - Whitby runs.. only about £20 a ticket,Sure be good to travel on a proper train again.

If you're ever in Pickering you must make for the 'Bay Horse' as they used to have a really nice selection of real ales in there with my favourite being Directors and Old Speckled Hen.

Here's a shot I did during the cold spell in 2010 of Pickering Castle. For Marco's information, yes, it is digital.

http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab240/Haselsh1/PickeringCastleThumbnailNo2.jpg

I took a whole series of images of Pickering Castle during the period 2008-2010 all during very bad weather as someone has to document these things and it may as well be me.

I recently had the pleasure of promenading with a young lady along the seafront and offered to buy for her one of the aforementioned ices. I requested from the vendor, in succession, a Midnight Mint, an Orange Fruity and then, in near desperation, a Lemonade Sparkle. I was met with a rather primitive response. Such disconsolation. The standard of frozen refreshment has certainly cheapened in all respects but the pecuniary.

Haven't had a chance to reply before, but André your photos are great.

They come within the genre of travel photography, where perfect composition is not really important as long as it feels as though 'you are there'. In each and every one of your photos, I feel as though I could walk into the picture and be there.

And a lovely bit of nostalgia. Shame petrol is no longer 4/6 a gallon (that's 25p in 'new money')!

Well done! Looks like you had a great time.

It just hit me that there are actually 3 different Ford Anglias in your pictures - 2 of them in full police livery - the one by the garage has a sign in the window that says "The REAL Police Ford Anglia" - I get the impression there's a bit of Anglia rivalry in Aidensfield...?

Right around the back of Goathland village is the 'Mallyan Spout' hotel. This is a fab place for getting yourself a Sunday lunch or a whisky or two. It is also a fantastic place to book for a wedding or reception. The name derives from the waterfall about a mile from the hotel.

Yeah! Consul Capri............very cool. A friend of mine had a dark blue one - pillar-less when the front & back windows are down, manual reverse light (bags of fun on the motorway at high speed with someone on yer tail!!), a boot that fits about 5 people (don't ask!), filler cap underneath a spring loaded rear number plate.

I remember in the late 60's being in the front row of the circle at my local cinema, leaning over the balcony eating one of these ice creams between the wafers but when I took a bite the ice cream shot out and down into the darkness below.

A booming voice came out of the darkness that he would sort the joker in the circle out during the interval. :uhho:

Needless to say I moved to a seat near the back. :sofa:

Hahaha... Love it, Andy!

Thing is, I used to do that sort of shit on purpose!!

My mates and I used to love going up to the 'Circle', sitting at the very front row, and dropping 'bombs' on folk below (usually with baldy heads - trying to aim for the centre of their 'domes'), which ranged from bits of rolled up paper, suitably soaked, which added weight and improved accuracy, half-eaten choc-ices, spent chewing gum, wet barley, fired from a 'pea-shooter', and water (using water pistols or crisp packet 'bombs') to small, home-made bangers... :eyebrows:

Needless to say, we quite often got chucked out of cinemas!
