good advice.
i'm suprised there are no 'audiophile grade' cotton buds which have been passed over rune stones or demagnetising gubbins. in fact, i'll be shocked

Be careful with yer lugs, though, they're easily damaged. Why don't we pool all our earwax and make some Xmas candles out of it? :eyebrows:

I would defo suggest to get your doc to do it. DO NOT use an air line.

Did this last November. My doctor not only used a water pic type thing but a long narrow spoon looking instrument. Hurt, too, as he put a lot of pressure behind it. You'll know immediately how much high frequency information you've been missing.

Had it done a couple of times.

It's the only chance that you'll ever get for a free upgrade to the hifi. It's what Tax & National Insurance are for, isn't it?

As a taxpayer, I say "Go for yer life, this one's on me!"

However, I will not be making any contributions towards your new amp.

TG, is it the case that you can only get it done if it's *really* necessary? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can just walk into the doctor's and ask for your ears to be syringed, as I believe it could be damaging if there isn't a sufficient wax problem. My apologies if anyone is eating their breakfast :)

Just keep saying "pardon" then the doc will clean them.:)

Actually, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't need it. In fact, if you don't need it (and therefore your ears aren't blocked) then it follows that you probably wouldn't hear much, or any difference.

However, if you do suffer from excess, then never mind the hifi, you shouldn't delay. I've realised it's a bit more than a couple of times I've had it done. I used to get all sorts of crap in mine & left it too long on two occasions. I once ended up with a ball of stuff - a big ball of stuff - rattling around in my ear like a pea in a whistle (I should imagine they've all finished breakfast by now). It took weeks to get it all cleared out.

On another occasion I was swimming when I went completely deaf in one ear. This was because I got some water in, and it just wouldn't come out. I spent about three evenings with my head hanging off the edge of the sofa, trying to make it run out. No dice! The pressure under water must have got it in, but there was no way it would come out - surface tension or something. Again, a couple of weeks to get them clear, pouring olive oil in every day to loosen it up for the water cannon treatment at the doctor's surgery.

Since that, I've had them done once a year.

:shudder: I have a pathological fear of having things poked into my ears or otherwise messed about. Besides, isn't this what your index fingers were made to do :)

Here's your solution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ear_candling), guys.

It works.
I use it instead of q-tips.
Q-tips damage you hearing over time.

Like maybe NOT listening to Kraftwerk late at night at volume levels that hurt yer back?

Make yer own candles! :ner:

Pity Andrew Ivimey doesn't post on this forum. I suspect he could be quite vocal on the subject of ear-candles!

Or indeed anything else ear related! ;)

Could you please enlighten, at least, me about what that in talk covers over?
What dows Andrew-something know that YOU think is valuable and that you are not entitled to take responsibility for writing about?

This is what I done a few months ago when I had an earwax build up. Get a small handheld Hozeloc pressurised sprayer (available from all good hardware stores). Then, whilst having a nice hot bath, half fill the hozeloc with bath water and pressurise (by pumping air into it). Next, adjust the nozzle to a jet spray pattern and ask your nearest and dearest if they will aim the jet of water into your lug'ole. Start from about 6 inches away and get a little closer if it isn't uncomfortable. After a couple of minutes you will hear ''eugh, whats that?'' it will be a small plug of earwax!
N.B. as soon as the plug pops out it will be uncomfortable to have the water sprayed in your ear anyway. You'll know when it's come out.
I did the other ear myself as i'd gained confidence by then!
It never hurt a bit. Hifi sounded sooo much clearer afterwards.
I'm just telling you what I did BTW. If you choose to try it you do so at your own risk.
I must admit though, I googled earwax removal first and found several people had done similar things with water pistols etc. so can't claim credit for the idea.
Good luck. I SAID GOOD LUCK!

Errr!

Yeah, sound drastic I know. I had wax in there and when I tried to clean ears with a Q tip it was very painfull, I suspect i was pushing the plug of wax against my eardrum.
The Doctors surgery where I live is next to useless unless it's an emergency so i opted for a diy job. All that faffing about with olive oil wasn't for me...

Hehe.... I have visions of people up and down the country pointing a jet wash into their lugs! :lolsign:

On a serious note, you shouldn't try and stick anything smaller than your elbow into your ears - it's easy to do some serious damage otherwise.

If anyone can actually get their own elbow in their ear please post a piccy - it'll give us all something to laugh about !
