Introduced avatar to the capabilities of a Land Rover Defender today - she loved it!

The little one looks thrilled, Rovers are just cool beans.
Here they are way expensive in the 1980's I knew a guy who had an old one most likely from the 60's. When it ran it was fun but every weekend he was changing an axel, fixing an oil leak, soldering the radiator ect...
He spent more time under it than in it.

We can take Maggie if you like Dave, and go the scenic route! I only got stuck once and had to be towed out - I'm sure we'll be fine!

With the listening session I have in mind for you dear boy, you need your ears to be as rested as a car journey will allow, otherwise it'll take hours rather than 45 minutes or so for your ears to recover :)

Sounds intriguing! We'll take the quiet one then! :)

My mate at work used to have a Freelander and we got invited to a Land Rover 'off-road' Experience day at their place in Devon, boy what a grin :)

Lot's of fun Alex and Avatar looks like she might be costing you some dosh one day in the future? "Daddy, I would really like some of those Harbeths your friends talk about on AoS and could I have a Discovery too"

A mate of mine used to go to some serious meets of Landy enthusiasts, i believe they used to race them round some mad courses?

I think you'd have liked his Landy Alex :eyebrows: SWB pickup with full roll cage, snorkle etc & a tuned rover 3.5L V8 under the bonnet :lolsign: You should have seen peoples in normal cars faces when the thing left them for dust :eyebrows:

Damn it was fast & it got there quickly to ;)

I'm already hatching a plan to have Maggie fully refurbished with a galvanised chassis and bulkhead - ready for the next generation. I'd rather have Avatar going around in something like a Defender than a hot hatch - but hey, petrol and diesel will probably be out of my price range when the time comes!

Missus and I were talking yesterday, that maybe we should be looking at a SWB with a V8 and doing a bit of competition... :eyebrows: We couldn't get rid of Maggie, but there's always room on the drive for one more! :)

OMG! That's what I'd want Alex. It might sound like ladies and handbags, but I love the 'desert orange' colour - if I could afford it I'd get my Delica resprayed that colour.

You're a brave man taking your little one out like that, but props for doing it. I went on a Land Rover off-road experience a few years ago. It was fab, but I went for a Delica instead in the end. If I was ever to replace it, I'd like to get something like this:

Lovely - a couple of the guys at the club have got Forward Controls, (full tilt versions, not the ambulance variety) and I love them (to be honest, I love any Landie...) The sound of a V8 (as fitted in the FC's) is just mesmerising...

Avatar absolutely loves going "over the mountains" - I guess there is a risk, but I'm much more careful when she's in the truck than when I'm on my own! :eyebrows: (I had a "last go" on my own before we left, went a bit mad on one of the sections but changed my mind on direction at the last minute - silly mistake - ended up "beached" and had to be towed out!) In reality though it is a pretty safe activity, and I selected the pictures that look the most dramatic whilst this stuff is bread and butter for even a standard Landie. :)

I know Alex, you go that slow on these courses the only real danger is the danger of being emabarrassed at one's inability to drive ;) I know my kids'd love it too, but my machine's not an off-roader. According to the wife :steam:

'Wanting' and 'Having' are two very different things Dave. I love my car, very distinctive it is, but it cost £4000 five years ago, and won't be replaced for at least another 5... I'm sure Alex is the same :)

Maggie was £3k 3 years ago, but I guess I've spent that again on her - and I'm planning a full rebuild with a galvanised chassis which will last 40 years without much problem and will outlast me. Hopefully she will stay in the family if the kid(s) are interested. That said, Maggie is a luxury, as she is a 2nd car - looks a bit strange climbing out of an off road prepped Landie in a suit! My main car is paid for by my company car allowance, which was another astute move by UK employers to put the onus onto drivers to have to sort everything out for themselves in return for a monthly allowance...

I always get a bit nervous of these type of threads in case the poster is showing off pictures of some useless piece of Japcrap but that, sir, is very much a proper Landy and my hat is suitably doffed at you!

Attached is a picture of my pile of Lode Lane loveliness. I'm ashamed to admit I still haven't got it muddy yet, in nearly 2 years of ownership.... :o

Love a bit of offroading. I used to get to do quite a bit of it putting up fences :)
Course, you need the right vehicle for it. This one……. probably not suitable

Not quite doing it for fun with a Landrover but I’ve had to winch it out a number of times and of course, you’ve just got to have a highlift jack.

I saw that one very nice spec sir, i'm still hankering after a V8 beastie after my loving my V6 series 1 80incher, my current 300 tdi Disco does the job but lacks in sound effects, just replaced another prop shaft rubber coupling after tearing the last one apart in 3 months towing my digger around, lesson to be learnt don't buy the cheap pattern ones

Ooh - I has a 1952 Series 1 80" - (2.2 BMC Diesel though, I would love one with a V6 or V8) - wish I'd never sold it, but hey ho.

Cheers Adam - I love Rangies too! Have you seen the price of 2 door classics! :stalks: Is yours a V8? Couple of the guys in the Suffolk club have got bobtailed V8s... not sure about butchering them to be honest, but they sure as hell don't mess around off road! We also have a genuine Camel Trophy Rangie in the club - I would so loved to have taken part in that or the G4 Challenge.

This one is okay though.

Same family now, of course. Luckily Tata don't seem to be meddling with the formula too much so far. Though I guess the current Defender's days must be numbered. :(

Maybe not with Landys, but I reserve comment concerning Jaguar.

The TATA’s aren’t as good as SWB Landrovers off road.

They are better than a lot of the offroad pretenders though and of course they’re a lot cheaper as long as you do the repairs and mods yourself.

The problem with the flat back, apart from the weight (2.75 ton with box and tools on a bit more) is the approach angle and I’ve dug the bed in a few times.
What they are is a work horse with 4 wheel drive, not toys.

Did the head, turbo (up to 8.5 bar), injector, dampers, poly bushes throughout and steering guard you can see plus a few other bits and pieces. It did over a ton on the motorway and I’ve had some interesting races with Landrovers.

Anyone tried the 4 wheel drive Ford Transit Crew Cab with the tweaked 2.5 Turbo diesel?
Now that’s a tool.

Is yours a V8?

Damn right - 3.9 litres of rumbly, torquey, thirsty scrumptiousness! There's no place for flippin' tractor fuel under my bonnet! ;)

Not quite sure I see the point of having a Landrover of any sort if you’re just going to use it as a shopping trolly let alone a V8 petrol.

Landrovers, the proper ones, not the poser variety ;) are basically tractors, that’s what they do best :)

In my defence, it did rescue quite a few people from the snow last year in the Hampshire village in which I live, and you can get big speakers in the back of it easily!

i've been involved in rescuing and collecting a rare 3 cylinder engine for our engine club today, 8.5 tons with all its electrical gear, 66kva output no less , by fcuk the parts are heavy, piston/conrods must go 150kgs each, cylinder heads around 200 kgs each, a lot of manual lifting to get these smaller bits out of their resting places and onto my truck/trailer involved, i came in bent double like a geriatric tonight, the old feller we are getting it from is a hoader of all things mechical, whilst locating bits for the above i found a 86 inch series one landy under a sheet, unfortuanately its completly shagged and beyond sensable restoration, my heart raced and then sank all within about a minute:(
