Electronically superior, but ergonomically inferior to the equivalent Ferrograph. Vortexion were the only other manufacturer to use the Series 7 deck.

For me it would be a Leevers Rich E6 tape machine as used by the BBC in the '60s.

If it was good enough for the late (and lamented) Delia Derbyshire of the (late lamented) BBC Radiophonic Workshop, it's good enough for me.

But then I would be content with a Studer C37, B62 or A80!

I tend to go want vintage more around guitars. A nice Strat or Les Paul would suit me fine

(1) Thorens TD224 turntable

(2) Nakamichi TX-1000 turntable

(3) Yamaha GT-2000 turntable

(4) Mission 767 loudspeakers

(5) Pentachord Pentacolumn loudspeakers.

With most of these, it's less the lack of availability, more the lack of availability at a price I can afford! That said, I've never seen a pair of Pentacolumns for sale anywhere.

With its matching DA-12 DAC?

:stalks: One of my favourite CDP/DAC combos of all time, using the best chip that was ever produced: the LEGENDARY TDA 1541

The system that filled my dreams at night so many years ago was one of these:

with one of these:

and two of these:

Dunno what it would have sounded like, but with looks like that, who cares?

Also like to get hold of another pair of Dahlquist DQ10s. I had a pair on loan for a while in 1976, but only had a horrid 15 watt Technics receiver to drive them with, which hardly did them justice.

Another one I never got to hear:

http://listeninn.com/Pictures-Used/Speakers/Goodmans-Dimension-8-1.jpg

Goodmans Dimension 8s, if you were wondering. Looked really cool in white. A tatty pair went on ebay for £35 last week. Could have been good for the cheap-as-chips system.

Vintage kit just looks so much more interesting, doesn't it? (That Lecson is to die for, looks-wise at least.)

For me, I already have the vintage turntable I think is the dog's danglies (Garrard 401). Would love to try a Decca in it one day.

Amps wise, Quad IIs or Leak TL12 Plus (dunno about a pre - but always fancied trying valve monoblocks.) So much choice with vintage speakers, but having heard the 12" Monitor Golds in Lancaster cabinets at Scalford, the Tannoy option is something I'd like to try at some point - probably only when I have a dedicated listening room, though. (And as long as I don't have to look at them, the fuggly blighters!)

I also lust after a vintage 70's Marantz tuner, and Pioneer cassette deck from the same period - not really worried about the model as it is very much a superficial thing, much like my Sony amp - just give me big VU Meters and I'm happy! :)

KK still uses this as his reference. So he can't be all bad can he?

Nakamichi 600 for me please! If it sounds half as beef-tastic as it looks that is.

Nice speakers. Not as much bass as you might think as the rear-mounted 10 incher is just an ABR, and their imagery, whilst expansive, is definitely a bit odd at times!

Still, I liked mine and still wish I'd kept them.

(Still got a) Yamaha TC-800 D 'Bellini' cassette deck, though it needs a belt.

Slope fronted. Sounded quite good too.
am feeling my age reading this! Had that Nakamichi , an Ambisonics thingy, plus several of the speakers in the collage!

Current retro stuff? Rock into Hafler pre+power into Leak Sandwich. Leak 3090s by the Kuro TV.
Plus bits.
